Horrible customer service! I left messages for the manager at Plymouth, at least 15 times over three weeks and never heard from her. Our sales person was helpful initially, but after her everything went downhill fast. Once the closet was installed, I did get them to come back and fix a couple things, but they are not perfect as they should be. Service was basically nonexistent. Closets by Design designer made a mistake in my closet not accounting for the plumbing access panel. I have gone back and forth with them for weeks trying to come to a resolution that didn't cost me more money from the original price and didn't leave my closet looking like a DIY disaster. Terrible customer service and they are not willing to do what it takes to make it right. Tried to cancel (nearly $500 fee to me). Tried to get them to do a different closet instead that was quoted the same price and was told the boards were already cut and they wouldn't do it. read more

My issue is miscommunication between designer and installer regarding mattress depth for a wall bed. Installers also left several nail holes unfilled. I have always been happy with my closets with this company until the past couple of years. The hall closet shelf has fallen and they say it's because my closet walls are "off". Hm. Im not sure why it was fine when they installed it and now it's not. It is a cement building with metal studs so I doubt it has moved. I called them and they said they would send a longer clip to hold the shelf up. No clips arrived and no call. I called again a couple of weeks later. She said she would have a person call me to schedule a person to come out to try to fix it. No call. It seems they are a good value but 10 years down the road when you need help or a fix don't count on them to help you. read more

This has been a bad experience for us. Everything seemed fine until we signed the contract and made the payment. This company outsources the installation, and the installers had communication issues. The parts for the closet arrived damaged and incorrect. The upper trim was wrong. The installer blamed the designer. The trim wasn't done, and it caused damage to the ceiling. The second time, a different installer came to install the new door. The new door was oversized lengthwise, the handles were misaligned, and the drawers were uneven. Finally, the third installer came with the new door. All the door handles had different edge measurements, and their levels were inconsistent. This is a very unprofessional company, and their workmanship quality is low. I would not recommend these people. Now I am left with issues that I have to fix. Shame on them. I would rate 0. Worst experience ever with a home project. Closets by Design had inferior quality, sloppy and rude installers, and infuriating customer service. The closet shelves were cut at the wrong size, the closet cabinet was not level and laminate strip was missing to finish raw edge in laundry room. The valet rods were cheap and short looking nothing like the valet rods we had from Closets by Design in our last home. It took three trips of installers to get work done and we had to hire a handyman to finish. I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere for your custom closet needs. read more

Look at my profile and you can see I have a lot of reviews on a variety of experiences. Trust me when I say, I would NEVER use this company again. Our experience: We had our design consultant come out in Dec 2021. We had our installation in April 2022. The pantry shelves were not aligned, they broke a top shelf that I did not even see until later, they scraped our walls, and when I asked if they were going to fix the walls, they said just throw some paint on them. When I asked them to fix the shelves because they were not aligned, the installer told me it is because of our walls. We live in a new construction house that was just built in 2021. He said that he cannot fix it. I explained that we paid for custom cabinets and that they should be aligned. After 45 minutes of him "trying" to fix them, he said I would have to call in to ask for a senior installer to come and fix. Luckily I took a picture of our invoice where he marked "Not complete" on the installation section (as the technician said he can't leave it behind). This proved to be the ONLY reason I was able to file a charge back. Customer service: Ryan is their "manager". I called him the same day of the installation, and he was unavailable. I emailed him pictures of the installation (same ones on this review) and asked him to return my call. Over the next 2 weeks, I got to know the receptionists very well, as Ryan was never in the office, or on the phone, or had just stepped out. I emailed him numerous times as well. I filed a complaint with the BBB and they never responded to that either. After 2 weeks, I finally called our Credit Card company and filed a chargeback. The VERY next day Ryan called me. He apologized and said that he has been very busy, and asked if he could come out the next day to see the installation. He came out and inspected the pantry. He confirmed that it did not "look" right and that it would need to be fixed. He apologized and said that next week the schedule was pretty open. He said that he would call me by end of day tomorrow to schedule. Unsurprisingly, he never called me. I called/emailed again and again for the next 2 weeks without any response. I called our other Credit Card company (that we used for the original deposit) and also filed a chargeback. Closets by Design NEVER even responded to the Credit Card Companies. We received our money back from both Credit Card companies. End thoughts: Make sure you take a picture of the end invoice/work order because the technicians can't leave it behind and that "I would never see it again". Call your Bank or Credit Card company if they do not respond to any repair requests or have not completed the installation. I see positive reviews for which we also fell for. It seems that if you pay a lot of money, they send their best installers and respond to any quality concerns. Our pantry system was $1800 and apparently did not meet the "high value customer" amount. Emily reached out and spent time with us to go through the space, measure and created a great design. We scheduled the installation after that, which took a while due to COVID-19 delays. The installers gave us a call a day before coming in with a prompt reminder. The entire install was a breeze as Mike and Mike took about 2 hours to get the closet completed and they ensured the space was clean when done. The email for customer service is not a legit email. I email has bounced back -three times. Oh, and when I asked for an adjustment to my bill for waiting six months since they were offering 40% off, I got a firm "NO". Can't get our money back but boy am I going to use social media to spread the word. Hmm, new house in a new development. I bet a lot of neighbors are looking into closet systems as well. I wish I had read about the lawsuit beforehand. The Closets By Design Lawsuit Says "Sale Prices are Fake. " So now I will share my story: patience sometimes is not a virtue... I ordered a 24"D desk, that was quoted to take about 6 weeks to install. The installation took 4 months, and the desk is 11" deep. It looks more like a cheap shelf than a $3,000 desk. I called and complained, the sales rep kindly apologized and assured me that they would be able to remedy the issue. However, it would be an additional $1,000 to fix. I agreed to save trouble. BIG MISTAKE. 4 months later, 2 men arrive to correct the issue. Turns out their truck was empty..how does that even happen?? I have called countless times in the 3 months since the empty truck incident. Every call ends with them promising installation a few weeks out, each of which get cancelled a few days before. I fear that now all I can do is take legal action. BEWARE OF FRAUDS. read more

This company uses predatory sales tactics in order to get you to sign a contract in your home when they come out for what you think is just going to be a free consultation. I was gone on a business trip while my girlfriend living in the home met with the sales representative and signed a contract on October 25th 2021 putting 50% of the project cost down as payment for a closet project that couldn't be completed until 5 months later. 4 days after my girlfriend signed a contract I learned that they have a 3 day cancel policy. On Friday of that same week I called and tried to cancel the project. The supervisor named Sarah at the Plymouth location absolutely refused to refund the $2000 down payment. It had only been 5 days and the closets were no where near production. I asked the supervisor, Sarah, if she thought it was ethical to keep the $2000 after 5 days, zero production, and zero work being performed and she said yes. I was absolutely stunned how this company still tried to shove the contract in my face after 5 days and the customers clearly not wanting the product. They clearly do not care what the customer wants and certainly do not operate under any sort of code of ethics. DO NOT BUY! read more

Overall I was really satisfied with the whole experience. The product is really nicely made, it looks great in the space . The designers and installers were professional and easy to work with. I'm in love with my new closets and finally feel like an adult. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is the price, it is pretty high. If you have standard sized closets, you could probably get a similar look & feel using ikea or hardware store products and doing it yourself for half the price. The CBD add-ons were so pricey (drawers, shoe racks, hamper etc.) so we had to keep it pretty bare bones and it still ran us over $3K for 2 closets. We were Installing in a very odd shaped attic with slopes ceilings, so the designs & custom cuts/sizes to work in that space was definitely worth it to us, and I have no regrets. read more

During the remodel of our townhouse, my wife and I decided we needed professional help in out closet spaces. We reached out to Closets by Design and they sent a designer over while we were still in the construction phase, to take measurements and discuss options for the master and an entry way closet that needed a unique approach. After going over details and talking about choices a plan was approved on the same day. The designer contacted warehouse and fabrication department before she left our home and we had an install date. I was surprised somewhat that it would take 3 months for them to get to us and yet excited about the design we made coming to life and being able to finally organize our space more efficiently. Upon the day of install, Johnathan arrived slightly early but ready to get started. This process was about 4 hours long and he was pleasant to work with in our home. I checked in on him as the install progressed and saw he was diligent and focused. I have to say we are very pleased with the results and should we decide to revamp the home office space we will be contacting them again. read more

Since my April 2018 closet installation I have NOT received ONE follow-up call to thank me for my business or more importantly ask me if I was satisfied or happy with their finished design/installation. I think they know the answer. Well it just so happens that I am not happy or satisfied, in fact I feel hustled out of almost $2000 on a project I could have done myself with materials from Home Depot for $200 and if I didn't have 2 herniated disks in my back and needed to hire professionals. Anywoo, I blame myself for not reading other reviews before I signed on the dotted line and for not picking up on clues from the designer that would not tell me a original base price for my shoe rack only design idea, but only wanted to mention that day was the last day to sign and receive 10% on top of 40% off. (But I still got a bill for $1600 for 2 shoe racks, labor and materials is what the installer said). I also should have known something wasn't all the way right when the designer kept leaving my home during our initial meeting to "quick get something from her car" every time I asked her about pricing but returned smelling like she took a cigarette break instead and her now famous quote "today you will receive 10% more off of 40% the lowest I've ever seen". End quote So to say I have buyers remorse is a true statement, cheap products, up charges and I forgot to mention the unannounced visit from the gal from their main office who let herself into my home and walk around looking for to drop off materials the installers left behind, but couldn't answer questions about my bill. UPDATE: After a month of not hearing back, they call me and said they were going to fix the issue, but now they are not because of my bad review. APPALLING. If I could give 0 stars, I would. You can read on for the full story, but long story short, this company has terrible customer service and will not install a closet system that actually fits your space. If you try to remedy an issue, they will deny responsibility and give you the run around. No one is accountable. It's been a month since my closet was installed with issues and I still have no remedy. We ordered a "custom" closet from this company, but the pieces were not cut to the right size. When they installed it, the cut to go over our quarter-round was made too small. Instead of addressing the issue, they installed the closet anyway which left a big gap between the closet system and the wall. They also cut the width of the closet a bit too short for the space (which makes no sense since they claim to cut the last piece on site to ensure custom fit). To make up for this, they shoved a few loose boards between the wall and the closet system. This looks ridiculous and shouldn't have happened with a "custom" closet. I called to complain about the installation issues and they first tried to say it wasn't their fault. But their consultant comes out to the home to measure for the cuts that are made, so there is no way a too-small cut isn't their fault. When I persisted, the closet consultant I worked with said she would put a change order in. However, it has now been a month and they still haven't fixed the issue or even provided a date for them to come fix the issue. When I call the office, they say to call the consultant. When I call the consultant, she says to call the office. It's a complete run-around. I will also note that their installation guy was rude and unprofessional. He walked through our house with snow covered shoes and refused my husband's request that he not track water on our hardwood floors. The installer said he would clean it up when he was done. But you can't leave a puddle on hardwood floors for an hour without risking damage. He also didn't clean up the mess he left behind during installation. We had a contractor error cause us to delay the installation of the closet system by Closets by Design. This error required that we push the installation of the closet system to the next week. The owner, Steve told us that there is a 10% penalty to reschedule. The closet system that costed $8484.00. That means there would be a fee of $848.40. This is ridiculous. Steve was not helpful at all and not willing to work with us for a solution. I would never do business with this company again. read more

Recently in May 2022 CBD, Plymouth, MN installed closets in our bedrooms. We also included a mirror installation on one of our master bedroom closet. During installation of the mirror we didn't like the quality of the mirror and we requested CBD installers for any possibility of replacement and they answered rudely and told us to garbage the mirror if we don't like it. We really disappointed the way CBD responded for such as small change worth of $250 out of $19k project. Finally they agreed to replace with new mirror but from last 3 weeks we have been calling them to install the new mirror which will take less than 10 minutes for the installation. I love my new closet! Michael and his co-worker were down to business, professional, and respectful of me working from home during the installation. They had a converted attic space to work with, in a 1936 house, so lots of slopes and non-squared surfaces. But it looks great. My only reason for one less star is that the belt rack hangs too low, so the belts pool out onto the floor (they're small belts), but the walls are low so I'm not sure what could've been done differently. Also, although there wasn't a mess left, a wipe down of the surfaces and drawers would be a nice touch. But that's really picky. I was so excited to start filling the closet, however, I didn't want to spend time cleaning! They were also a better price than another company; the same ballpark as a third bid. Ordered $6k closet system, requested after drywall complete to stop back and remeasure to make sure all fits around outlets. They did remeasure, reluctantly, and when product arrived it was wrong and covered outlets etc. Then the drawer had to be redone because of mistake, new drawer had to be added (which they argued with us) demanded full payment after install (before they left house, poor installer is bill collector) and here we sit a month later without either drawer, 4 messages and no call back. It appears ownership has other employment and this is a side gig. Horrible organization, next up a suit for civil theft! read more
