After six years this review is long overdue!! I could not be more pleased with the care that both Lucy and I have received over the years at Closter Animal Hospital. Dr. Maida is an excellent Vet--extremely knowledgeable, professional and thorough and someone whose judgement I completely trust. I've had various questions and concerns over the years as Lucy is my first pet. Dr. Maida has a wonderfully calm and reassuring manner. Used Dr Diggles in Dumont Animal Hospital for years. With him out on medical leave I wish him well. He was great. However, since his absence, the place has gone down hill and the staff ruder and more inflexible than ever. My 11 yr old black lab retriever was extremely sick and we weren't sure she'd make it through the night. Called Dumont in the morning, and they had no interest in trying to accommodate despite years as a customer, even as an emergency. Called VCA Closter Animal Hospital as a back up and they were INCREDIBLE. Polite, friendly, concerned staff. Didn't mind reaching out to Dumont for records. Saw us within 2 hours. Dr Michael Maida is an astonishingly good vet, knowledgeable caring and not pushy. Gave us our options and his recommendation to do less rather than more. Thankfully all turned out great and the bill was not terrible for an emergency visit. For some reason I had decided not to use them years ago and wish I'd thought it through. Had an appointment today for rabies vaccine for my 4 month old puppy but they did something else. After they were done vet told me to come back in 2 weeks for rabies shot. I thought that's why I was there today? They charged me $421.77 and told me to come back in 2 weeks again. At this point I feel I've been scammed by this place and of course I'm not going back. Dr. Maida and the entire staff at Closter Animal Hospital are wonderful! My 9 year old dog needed her teeth cleaned under anesthesia. It's an expensive procedure. However, I felt the charge at Dr. Maida's office was reasonable. The care provided to my dog by Dr. Maida and his attentive staff was just excellent. Closter Animal Hospital is my 3rd vet in recent years. My dogs have found a new vet for good! I'm so happy that we found this place! I highly recommend Closter Animal Hospital. After going to Oradell ER two nights in a row, another Emergency Vet in Paramus, no one could figure out my dog Buster's diagnose. Buster is in heart failure and wouldn't stop crying for days. I reach out to Dr. Maida on a Sunday and he returned my call immediately! I brought Buster in to Dr. Izen who took his time evaluating Buster.. did some research, adjusted his meds and I'm so relieved Buster is doing so much better. Was unable to see my regular vet but was able to get an appointment with Dr. Maida. He's a perfectly nice, seemingly qualified vet but his charges were exorbitant compared to my regular vet and past experience. The charge of $48 for seven generic anti-inflammatory pills was shocking. My advise is to ask about charges before any procedures are done or medication is prescribed. read more

I adopted a cat from ACC in NYC. He had a "head cold" and they warned me to keep him "isolated" from my other cats for a couple of weeks, so he (and sometimes I) were staying at a friend's house in NJ. I took the new guy over to the Closter VCA Hospital to get him checked out before taking him home. I had a certificate from ACC for treatment for his condition, but was convinced I wouldn't get out of there without some serious upselling, and a big bill. But much to my delight, I got exactly what I didn't pay for -- a follow-up exam on his symptoms, a quick check of eyes and ears, and a nice conversation with the doctor about taking him home safely both in terms of his condition and in terms of introducing him to my other cats. Despite the fact that nobody was making any money from this, everybody was really nice to me and him. I even got some free food samples to take home. The facility itself is clean and homey at the same time. And it has ample parking. So there are two lessons here: (1) ADOPT from ACC or your local municipal shelter and save a life! (2) Take your new best friend for a free check up or follow up exam at Closter Animal Hospital. read more

So disappointed in my experience here. I made an appointment to get my dog's glands expressed. My usual vet's office charges $15 for a tech to do this simple, 5 minute procedure, and that's about what groomers charge as well. When I made the appointment, I was not told that there is an $89 fee for an "office" visit. It's so important for vets to be upfront about costs. They're entitled to charge what they like, but they're not entitled to add exorbitant extra fees without prior advisement. I was shocked to hear about this fee after the appointment, which lasted less than 10 minutes. I explained to them that there had not been any prior discussion about this additional office visit fee and expected the office to apologize for not being clear ahead of time and charge me for the only service I asked for and agreed to. Instead, they told me that I should have asked if there would be any additional fees on top of the service I scheduled and that it was my fault for not asking this question. So odd that they wouldn't want to establish clear communication so that no one feels shortchanged or misled. An experience at a vet should feel warm, collaborative, and characterized by clear communication, and this really fell short. read more

They all truly love & care for the well-being of animals, and quickly come to know their patients & their people as individuals, not case files, treating you as family. We came to their practice after a declining relationship with another local vet, then the very high cost (though excellent care from Dr. DeSantos) at Oradell Animal Hospital. Closter Animal Hospital may not be the cheapest, but they provide outstanding care, and will advise you on available payment options, especially if, like us, you are a multi-pet household. read more

The absolute best. There aren't enough wonderful things to say about Dr. Maida and his amazing staff at Closter Animal Hospital. We have had many animals who were patients here over the years and the care is unbelievable. Dr. Maida has helped my dog to run and play again when she had barely been able to walk, he recently saved my cat's life with an emergency procedure and made arrangements with a surgeon to permanently relieve the problem, he helped us care for our older aging cat with kidney issues and seizures, keeping the cost to a minimum and allowing him to die peacefully with dignity at home at the age of 18. He truly cares for his patients and will do everything to help the entire family through whatever comes up. In addition to his excellent skills as a vet, he is extremely personable, warm, and has a fantastic sense of humor. The staff is always friendly, helpful, and kind, regardless of how ridiculous your questions may seem. Laurie and Darlene in particular have helped our family through so much, and they always reach out to check in to see how our animals are doing. I have had many animals throughout my life, but never have I ever had a veterinary hospital that cares and respects animals and their families as much as this one. I could go on forever. I was recommended when I moved to the area a few years ago. Experiences were good overall. Little by little the prices kept increasing. I have 6 dogs and asked for a multi-dog discount. Said they couldn't accommodate me. I also had a situation with my 1 dog that cost me a bloody fortune and could have been avoided! I have found another vet locally right in Cresskill and the office hours, vets and staff are wonderful. In addition, they are not looking to rip me off! read more

My boyfriend and I brought our fur child (a little kitty!) here. He had an eye infection and even though we arrived late for our appointment (and on the wrong day to boot!) they were able to accommodate us. The staff and our doctor (dr. maida) were really nice and friendly. (one of the receptionists personally said goodbye to our kitty and visited him when he stayed over for neutering.) the place is really clean, which is important. one caveat though, they are really expensive i think. you can definitely find a lot cheaper for shots, neutering, etc., at different places, but that requires some research, time, etc.. overall an excellent experience!! read more

Closter Animal Hospital is AMAZING and I would recommend to anyone and everyone! They helped transfer my dog over to their care as soon as I called to tell them the issue we were having with the Dumont Animal Hospital (15+ year patient of theirs) and couldn't of been more caring and sincere. I immediately knew I made the right choice by switching my dogs there. They've taken care of my older yorkie and today we brought our younger chihuahua there for a teeth cleaning. Not loving having to drop my dog off somewhere they put my mind at ease throughout the entire experience. Only 2 and a half hours after I dropped her off they sent a personal text to let me know she did amazing and would be ready to be picked up a little later in the afternoon. They all do such an amazing job there and we absolutely love Dr. Maida!! Evelyn, Sonja, and the rest of the staff are always super sweet and helpful whenever we call with a question or bringing the dogs in for a check up. I wouldn't even think of bringing my dogs elsewhere after having amazing experiences over and over again with the Closter team! They are truly the best!!! read more

I love Closter Animal Hospital! Any time I have called with a concern that our Maltese is sick, Dr. Maida calls back immediately-it doesn't matter if it is at night or on a weekend. I trust Dr. Maida so much that even though I am mainly living in NYC now, I continue to come to NJ to see Dr. Maida. The staff that answers the phone is always warm and patient, I never feel rushed. Well, I checked reviews of vets around me and Dr Maida seemed to be one with good reviews. We are first time dog owners and Dr. Maida has been very good. I give the staff 5 stars. They are courteous and treat you well. I have not had to wait in line the 2 -3 times I have been there as yet. I wish they were closer to me thought. I live in Oradell and have to drive in typical jersey traffic all the way to Closter. They are a bit expensive though and I guess that is typical of vets. But I would definitely recommend Dr Maida. I had the pleasure of bringing my two kittys to Dr. Maidas office to get neutered and spayed a little while back. Not only was his office staff professional and courteous -they really loved seeing my cats. Dr. Maida put my mind at ease immediately and both kittys were well taken care of . I had trouble with my appointment (getting the cats in the carriers) and the staff was responsive and understanding. I was first introduced to Closter Animal hospital about 14+ years ago, when I took my then 5 y/o cat to see Dr Maida about a kidney issue he was suffering from and one that another nearby vet hospital recommended we might want to "consider all options" to treat him including surgery and complex medicinal treatments, and more. Dr Maida assessed his condition and spoke to us plainly and treated us fairly, putting us on a new food diet and making sure we both looked for signs of pain in my cat and that we'd committ to bringing him in regularly for checkups - which we did for 15 years, during which my cat lived a full, mostly healthy (less the kidney issues), and very happy life until he passed away at home in 2016 at the ripe old age of 18(!). In 2017 we adopted a dog and we can't be more at ease and happy about working with Dr Maida and his staff - from the vet assistants to the receptionists answering the phones and working the front desks - as he is so diligent, so very patient and informative, and he has our complete trust as we know he's looking out for our pet (dog) first, his family (us) second, and his business ($$) third, which is so uncommon when you deal with these vet offices in the area. I can not recommend him and Closter Animal Hospital highly enough. read more

I am confident in Dr. Maida's ability, as well as the technicians and office staff. Everyone is very caring and friendly.
