But all sizes mixed in- but that's part of the digging fun. Staff was so lovely and helpful, quick to offer a dressing room start seconds after I started carrying something. Also exciting that they have color coded tags. I felt like Charlie looking for that golden Wonka ticket, and was thrilled that my most expensive item was 50% off. Total score. Left there buzzing from the variety of prints, brands, and fabrics. If I were a local, this place would be in regular rotation.

I browsed around in here for about 15 minutes before I finally realized everything was out of my budget. I couldn't find one piece of clothing for under $100. Okay, that's a lie. I think there was a hat for around $50. But still. I didn't even find the clothes in this store to be that nice. Everything seemed a little outdated or at least not very modern. To each their own, I suppose. It's been a while since I've been stalked and eye-balled by salespeople when I'm perusing a store, but sure enough, it happened here. One of the ladies followed not two feet behind me the entire time, watching what I was doing, but never offering a hand. I mean, I may not look like I'm 30 years old, but I certainly don't look like a teenager ready to shoplift whatever I can fit into my purse. I was extremely insulted and definitely uncomfortable while shopping here. One cool thing about this place is that they do in-house tailoring to all their clothes. You can't bring something from a different store and have it altered, but they'll change any article of clothes you buy from their store. That sets them apart from most other clothing stores. If you're going to have a look in here, make sure you check out their secret lower level. Okay, it's not really a secret since anyone can go in here, but it's somewhat hidden behind racks of clothes. There's actually a whole separate section to this place that seems like it could be a totally different store. And yes, the aforementioned salesperson followed me down there too. So, to sum up: too expensive, not my style, un-trusting and not very discreet salespeople. Not my forte.

During my visit, I met Holly Allen who showed us some of her latest designs, made from Indian Saris! They were beautiful! Holly Allen is well known in the local designer world and she designed pieces for a lot of the artists attending and performing for the 2008 Junos in Calgary. Carrying everything from clothes and handbags, to bracelets and custom-made charms, Chichi Couture is a very interesting and hip boutique. They offer complimentary gift wrapping for all their customers and are extremely active and present at local events (Alberta Fashion Week, Fashion Has No Borders and Miss Universe 2009, just to name a few).

The place is in an apartment building which is strange but they seemed to have divided the area really well. Clothing is organised by color and size so it is really easy to browse clothing that you want or don't want. Today there was a discount on clothing depending on the color of the tag, so that in itself was fun. The clothing was surprisingly pretty fashion forward with a lot of designer names, some stuff was expensive and then some stuff was really affordable. The designs and taste of the store owner is great and I can tell she sifts through what comes in. There are many places to try on clothing and there is even a little place to sit and relax and view mags. The staff is extremely friendly and I will come back to this store when I have more time.

There is an awesome process in place for those who want to submit clothing for consignment and an easy, transparent way for people to see whether their consigned items have been purchased. I have felt intimidated when dropping clothing off at other thrift stores, but Urban Thrift is definitely a welcoming space! I was told that the store holds a variety of special events and promotions, all of which sound very interesting although I have not yet been able to attend any. This is the kind of place your stylish, arty, fashionable aunt would shop. So they have tons of cool stuff, cut for more mature bodies and that veers to conservative with higher necklines and long sleeves. They've also got quite the collection of higher-end jeans.
