There are so few options for yarn/spinning/weaving/knitting/crochet supplies in the greater Baltimore area I'm not surprised the shop is busy. I signed up for a two hour private in-person spinning lesson to learn how to use my wheel. On the website it explicitly says "Topics with spindles OR spinning wheels can be tackled in private lessons. Beginning spinning lessons on a spindle OR wheel should be booked for a 2 hour duration" They don't allow you to leave a comment on the website (you "buy" the lessons as if they were an object) and each person teaches multiple things. I booked two hours and thought they would follow up to see what I was hoping to learn. They did not so a few days later I called to tell them my goal for the two hours - a beginner lesson for spinning on my new wheel. They seem surprised I had even blocked the times which was a little red flag I wish I hadn't ignored. I was asked if I had a drop spindle. I said I did but I wasn't interested in using it. I was told that I have to learn the drop spindle first and they would have one for me to use if they didn't like mine and to bring my wheel. We spent the whole time on the drop spindle which I had no interest in and didn't find it very enjoyable. The staff member said I seemed "tired" and was "making mistakes" and cut the lesson short. They refunded me the money for the time (about 40 minutes) we didn't use which basically covered the cost of the drop spindle they had me buy. I thought we'd use the spindle to get some visuals and then move on but we did not. Why couldn't we have spent the last 40 minutes on my wheel? It was clear she wanted me to leave when she decided we were done with the drop spindle. I asked about paying for more time another day and getting on the wheel I was told "you could always do that if you want" but it didn't seem like that would be welcome. She tightened up something on my wheel and briefly spun on my wheel herself for about a minute without instruction and then I left. I got a few good tips (one was where to get a sandwich-Caffe Di Roma--which really was good), they sold me some better fiber to spin than what I already had but I still don't know how to drop spindle well or use my wheel at all. I wouldn't say they were rude exactly but they weren't very friendly and I felt like I was being condescended to a lot during the lesson. I tried to be cheerful and pleasant but the overall vibe was dismissive and again, I never got to do what I actually signed up to do. The whole vibe was weird. The instructor and another woman (the owner? manager?) talked over me and around me quite a bit about my wheel and other things rather than actually asking me a question or listening. There was some lint on my wheel and they really fixated on it, thinking it was bugs(?) instead of listening to me when I said it was from a cloth I was sent to use when I assembled and finished it myself. Then they were argumentative and said the spinning wheel's brand's wax didn't come with a cloth. Okay, maybe it doesn't but I didn't buy the brand's overpriced wax and never said I did. It felt like they were trying for a "gotcha" moment like middle school girls do. I know what I used! They just didn't pay much attention to anything I said. I felt like I was an unwanted guest at someone's house, not someone paying for a lesson at a store. That said, there are few options even remotely locally so I took a chance. I regret it. You don't have to learn the drop spindle before learning on the wheel--it is very odd Cloverhill was so insistent I needed to when their own website says this isn't the case. Other places do not operate this way. I wish I had saved the money and took a real spinning wheel class anywhere else even if it meant driving 90 minutes to Philadelphia or Red Stone Glen. Just a FYI to save yourself some other disappointment, I see this store on "Black woman owned" yarn store lists occasionally and maybe it was at some point and their choice of logo on their house brand yarn (Tempting Ewe) might give that impression but that does not seem to be accurate or even reflective of any diversity of the staff. If you are in bind and near Catonsville for some reason, the store does have a lot of yarn and fiber as well as other fiber arts equipment that is difficult to find in person in the Baltimore metro. I would think that would be the main draw of this shop. read more

Stephanie's Portuguese knitting class was clear, class size was limited to six, so she was able to give individualized attention to everyone in the class. Jen is a gem -- very patient and helpful, willing to work with the patterns you are working on; and helpful in getting started with new techniques like knitting a baby blanket from the center out in the round for the first time (private lesson). Loved popping over here to look for local fiber and yarn. Loved their stuff but refrained from getting more fiber or yarn at this time and just got some knitting needles to help me finish my sweater hopefully faster. I decided to get a set of addi flex needles for the sleeves, as well as a Chiagoo fixed circular needle for magic loop. Between these 2 new needles and my existing needles I should have enough options to get the sleeves and body ribbing with the long tail tubular cast off on all 3 done. Sigh. I hope to get there soon so I can not only use my new goods but also finish the sweater!!! :) The person there was really nice and continued helping me even though it was closing time. This is an amazing local yarn store. The staff is always friendly and the selection of yarns (Malabrigo!) is fantastic. They kindly offer to wind your yarn for you and have a welcoming, cozy atmosphere for folks to sit and knit. They also offer some brands that aren't readily available elsewhere. The Tempting Ewe yarns ate hand-dyed and gorgeous. I'm a big fan of Malabrigo Rios and they have almost every color in stock. I also took a crochet class here and it was a huge help. I'd tried to teach myself and failed multiple times. Thanks to the lovely staff at Cloverhill, I can crochet now. If you have a quick question, there's always someone there who can help, and there are several classes offered, along with kit alongs, to help you on your fiber journey. Stephanie is the greatest. I called this afternoon asking if they had anyone who could repair a spinning wheel. She told me to come in and see if it was a simple fix that she could help with. I got here after work. The shop was filled with people sitting and socializing and knitting. She was clear about putting the wheel somewhere that was safely out of the way for people, spent a few minutes with someone else before coming over to spend time focusing on fixing my wheel. Then she threaded it and tested it, then had me test it and gave me some tips on overcoming some bad habits that I had picked up years ago. She was very nice and super helpful. My wheel is working again, and I will definitely return to this shop that is filled with roving and yarn in every color you can imagine. This is an AMAZING yarn shop! It's has a great selection of yarn, including their own Tempting Ewe. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. They have many tables with chairs for people to come and hang out, there is no charge to hang out to knit, crochet, spin, weave or what ever your craft is. Cloverhill offers classes on - knitting, crocheting, spinning, and weaving. Cloverhill also has social nights, Thursdays for knitting, the 2nd and last Fridays, the spinners come out; of course you can do what ever craft you do on any of those nights, just come out and have fun, it is free after all! Nice and friendly staff but I find their selection disappointing. Superwash wool is **terrible** for the environment. Both from the chemicals used in processing (which are so toxic that wastewater companies refuse to accept water from this process) and the plastic coating ("resin" and "polymer" are synonyms for plastic) on the yarn that shed microplastics in your washing machine. These microplastics end up in our oceans (and eventually the fish we eat) because they're too small to be filtered by wastewater treatment. (Synthetics like polyester, acrylic and nylon also shed microplastics). Superwash alternatives that use an organic treatment process are becoming more widely available from producers like Neighborhood Fiber Co (local to Baltimore!), O-wool, Rosy Green Wool, Tanis Fiber Arts, Swans Island, and The Fibre Co (their sock yarn, Amble, also uses recycled nylon). I was hoping Cloverhill would have Neighborhood Fiber Co if not the others. Of course, most LYS will offer a variety of non-machine wash wool yarn, but I browsed Cloverhill for about 30 minutes and nearly every skein I checked was superwash. One was polyamide, which is much worse. Needle / notion / pattern selection was OK. I was hoping to find Lykke or Laine but didn't see them. The only yarn shop I visit. I first visited cloverhill 7 years ago till this day I'm so great full to have found this gem! When I first started to visit I only knew crochet. Thanks to cloverhill I have learned so many techniques and have picked up many great hobbies. Cloverhill is the place to be on Thursday nights and Sundays as these are for social gatherings. The owners have their own line of yarn called Tempting Ewe which is my go to yarn. It is so unique I fall in love with each new color way. The shop is kept very well stocked. You can find everything here from little notions to huge weaving looms. The best instructors are at cloverhill! I have never witnessed a boring class or knit along. I have visited this yarn shop on several occasions and have always found the staff friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. This is especially true since Wae and Amanda have become the owners. Recently I was looking for a particular yarn I had used on a winter scarf project but could not remember the brand. My description of what I had in mind was so vague I thought I must be the customer from hell. Amanda, however, never lost patience and low and behold found the yarn I wanted. Once I saw the name I recognized it. Project help is always available. This place is great. I recently took a beginner knitting class here. The teacher of my class (who is also the owner) was very patient and helpful. The class size was great as well, just 3 people, so we really got the personalized attention needed for newbies. I didn't get to browse the shop as much as I would have liked, because I came just in time for the class. However, from what I did see there are many options for yarns, supplies, as well as opportunities to learn. I hope to be back soon. This is not so much to do with the shop, but sort of related. Some people don't realize how funky their houses and environments smell. I go a lot of places and smell things others can't smell, sometimes it amazes me. Lovely, small shop with a very friendly staff and regulars. Yarn selection is a wide range, but limited in quantity. Big plus, they also carry spinning wheels, drum carders, winders, shuttles and other weaving and spinning tools in small quantities as well. What a great local treasure! It had such a great selection of yarn that I wanted to take each of one color home! Every kind, color, weight, and hue is found on their shelves. They also have a great selection of patterns, knitting supplies, even spinning wheels. The staff was also great and told me about the classes they offered when I told them I wanted to learn how to do cables. As we looked around, the woman working made sure to help us and tell us about any yarn that might be of interest. I went to Clover Hill right when I re-started knitting. I thought it was great. But then I decided to do a yarn crawl all over the area to check out the others, DC, Frederick, Hamden (Lovely Yarns), even three in NYC (including PurlSoho) . Clover Hill is still the best and is HUGE by yarn shop standards and has a large variety. They are friendly and super helpful. Tons of parking right out front, restaurants around the corner, you can't go wrong.. I found a really cool hand made wooden shawl pin as well. Based on a negative review I asked them about their return policy. As long as the yarn is within their return time window, is still wound as a hank, looks new, has been keep in the bag and not exposed to smoke, animal, people (or musty/ dusty house or car funk - my words), they will allow a return. She also mentioned if you request, they will offer to put back an extra skein for you in their back room to ensure you have enough yarn to complete your project. Bottom line save your time and go to Clover Hill, they have the best selection. read more

Yesterday, my friend and I decided to visit yarn shops; Clover Hill was on the list. We hadn't been in several years and learned that the the shop had changed ownership. What a wonderful time! The shop environment was friendly and inviting. Everyone, staff and customers alike, was willing and eager to help or just talk shop. I loved the yarn selection, but even more than that, I loved: the atmosphere,the staff, the comfy sitting areas inviting you to sit a spell and just the overall feeling of community! My friend and I stayed for 3 hours! It was a real pleasure visiting Clover Hill and I will definitely return much sooner than later. read more

A friendly, fun yarn shop. The selection is not as extensive as All About Yarn in Columbia, but the prices are great and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They've got the basics here, and not much in the way of novelty, tacky stuff (which is a check plus in my book any day). I wish the selection of sock yarns was better. It's hard to find this place--it's in a very weird industrial park where you'd never expect to find a yarn shop. But it's next to a comic book store, so if you want to drag your Nerd along for the trip, they can stay occupied while you drool over alpaca. read more

Thank you, Amanda for your concern and attention to my review. Really wanted to give a great review for this shop, that I found to be amazing the first time I went. I found it quite by accident while visiting family from out of state. My daughter and I made a special trip to Cloverhill for Local Yarn Shop Day - the first of three shops for the day. The owner was not there at the time we arrived. Amanda had been wonderful on our last visit and we looked forward to seeing her again. Not one of the approximately 12 customers/ staff (don't even know who actually worked there) welcomed us on arriving or at any time during our 15-20 minute visit. No one said anything to us or showed any interest in our even being there. So, we went to two other wonderful Baltimore stores that were happy to see us, happy to discuss fiber, happy to be sharing LYS Day, happy to be sharing free patterns with us and a few wee free goodies as well. Actually, they were truly, basically, genuinely happy people. Not all all like the unsociable lot at Cloverhill Yarn. What a shame Amanda wasn't there to brighten up her business. read more

The shop changed ownership in July and moved next door in the complex. The new owners, Wae and Amanda have expanded the inventory and created a most welcoming atmosphere for the local knitting community. One is encouraged to drop in whenever the shop is open to solve a problem, stitch a few rows, or just chat. The Sit and Knit on Thursday night and Sunday afternoon is Over The Top with a wide range of ages and projects. Whether you are a "newbie" or a veteran with sticks or hook you will be welcome. There is excellent advice available whether it be knitting, crocheting, spinning, dyeing or life in general. Went to return yarn that I didn't need, when I brought the sales women said you have 30 days to return, if you don't need all the yarn. When I did, a new saleswoman wouldn't take it because she it's didn't have an odor that that could put back on the shelf. If that's the case, then the first one should have said something. I have recently realized through the grapevine that the shop has changed management; please take this review for what it is: a bit outdated. Nice selection but painfully poor quality of staff. I feel sorry for the owner who has always been helpful. Pros: +stock is a balance between workhorse staples and a rotation of more special featured yarn +spinner friendly* +reasonable prices Cons: -needle and notions supply can be spotty so call ahead to make sure they have what you need -staff is a bit cold and isn't very knowledgeable** *The shop sells a very small selection of fiber and hosts sit-and-spin nights a few times each month. **Although I'm a pretty experienced knitter I was having trouble with a pattern so I scheduled a private lesson. When I scheduled the appointment I was very clear about what pattern and techniques I needed help with, and the salesgirl was almost obnoxious in assuring me she would have absolutely no problem with the techniques. When the day of the lesson came it was obvious that the salesgirl 1) had not prepared or viewed the pattern at all, and 2) was totally unable to do the techniques in question, let alone teach someone. She spent 40 minutes fiddling with my yarn and watching YouTube videos to try to figure it out (as though I couldn't have done that on my own for free) while I tried to delicately insist that I'd prefer not to continue with the lesson. **On another occasion I asked some prices and details of some spinning wheels/supplies and the workers (aside from knowing nothing about the actual products) didn't know the prices and told me they could take my name and have the owner email me. This is the most welcoming yarn shop I have ever visited. There are no craft police and the staff as well as the regulars are very friendly and always helpful. I really enjoy knit night when everyone shows up to craft, frequently learn from each other, chat, and laugh (Lots of Laughing) together. The shop has a wide selection of good quality commercial yarns in a variety of price and fiber ranges. They carry some of my favorite hand dyes like Malabrigo, Hedgehog Fibers, and the shops own yarn, Tempting Ewe, dyed by the sweet, smart, and charming owners, Amanda and Wae. There's a good range of spinning fibers available and they even carry a good stock of my favorite fiber artist Hobbledehoy! If you need one-on-one help they are always happy to provide it with eagerness, smarts, and smiles. They also provide more intensive help by offering one to two hour one-on-one classes for $30/hour with a staff member of your choice, set up at a time that is convenient for you. This shop and the delightful people there really go above and beyond to make your experience a wonderful one. I tend to be more of a JoAnn's/Michael's kind of yarn purchaser, but I'm starting a special project and wanted to get something unique. Service was friendly, thorough, and helpful if a little slow (which is okay, because she took a long time to help me). Ultimately, my wallet does tend to win out on these things long-term - I looked up the yarn I bought and found it to only be $0.25/skein more expensive than yarn.com. I'll gladly pay that small amount more to help keep a local shop in business. read more

I can only second the other great reviews for Cloverhill Yarn Shop. I stopped in to pick up some stitch holders, but stayed for quite a while looking over all the beautiful yarn, including Tempting Ewe, their in-house product. And yes, several skeins came home with me. The shop itself is large and airy,with plenty of seating and abundant natural light, all the better to see the wonderful colors. There's a good selection of crafting tools, such as needles and patterns. During my visit I had the pleasure of speaking at length with Wae, one of the owners. She is very knowledgeable and friendly, and gave me some good ideas for future projects. She also told me about the various events sponsored by the shop, such as their ingenious Market Day, when customers can bring in unloved stash yarn and "sell" it to others for Cloverhill "cash" to be used for store purchases. What a great way to destash and buy gorgeous new yarn at the same time! In addition various classes and one-on-one instruction are offered.I look forward to a return visit in the near future and wish the shop great success. read more
