I've just visited Black Sheep Yarn Shop for the first time, and my initial impression is that it is easily the best yarn shop I have been to in years. The staff here is so friendly, the selection is incredible. I don't think I've ever seen so many of my favorite brands in one place: BC Garn, Ella Rae, Malabrigo, Noro, Cocoknits, Swans Island, Chiaogoo, WYS and more, all brightly lit and well-organized. They also stock spinning and weaving gear, which is not very common among yarn shops where I live. I visit family in the area a few times a year, so will definitely be making Black Sheep Yarn Shop a regular part of my Baltimore-area itinerary going forward! (Bonus tip for best experience: there is a very cool tropical fish store in the building just behind this one, which is a good place to send one's male companion while one takes one's time perusing yarn.) read more

Today I learned Tapestry Knitting in a private lesson at the Black Sheep Yarn Stop in Timonium, Md. What an experience it was. Something so simple, took a long time to master; but the owner of the Shop was incredible, patient and explained the entire process in such a way that now I feel confident in creating new Tapestry pieces. Time will tell. Until today I wouldn't have thought a yarn shop could be unfriendly. I walked in... browsed a bit. Picked up two skeins. Two ladies were sitting near the register talking. I smiled at them. Instead of smiling back they stopped talking and gave me a 'WTF do you want??? look'. No one got up to chat with me or to even ask if I needed any help. The least they could have done would have been smile. I was thinking, they're probably introverted... but then I realized that didn't matter. Their intent was to make me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. Why else would they stop talking and stare at a customer instead of simply smiling back? Why was I about to spend $85 on yarn at a shop staffed by 'Mean Girls'? I am a person of color, but I don't think their response was racially motivated. I recently took up knitting as a hobby (actually "obsession" is a better word) and Black Sheep is my favorite place on the planet right now. I started with a visit to the shop to browse, signed up for a short class to gain a few new skills, and now find myself going there just to chat with other knitters and create new projects. Donna, the owner and teacher for many of the class offerings, couldn't be more welcoming to knitters of all abilities. She knows everything there is to know about yarn. There is a palpable sense of community for everyone in the store. The customers come from all walks of life, ages, and backgrounds. She was able to teach a difficult technique and make it fun; I had tried to learn it from another shop owner and been unable to. I have been shopping at Black Sheep Yarn Shop for many years and love both the previous owner and well as the current owner. One of the biggest reasons I love this shop is that all are welcome around the table at any day and time. There are no restrictions as to when you can sit and knit. Anyone new to the store is welcomed to come and sit and soon they will feel part of the Black Sheep family, or should I say flock! Donna and her staff are always available to answer any question. I think this is what makes the shop so special. This is especially important when someone is learning and needs guidance. Many times those sitting around the table will offer to help as well. There are always a variety of classes available to hone your skills. I have been knitting for many years, but still find classes that I find challenge me and take my knitting to the next level. I started spinning recently and the instructor really helped me to go from trying to just get the wheel to spin to creating consistent skeins of yarn. The best part is there is a group that meets once a month to spin and I have learned so much from them as well. Donna has such a nice variety of yarns and fiber to choose from that range from low to high end price points and she will definitely work with your budget. There is also a sale section that has a nice selection. The loyalty program also enable you to get a nice discount. I was looking to swing by on a whim for my first time to spend a a good chunk of money at the Deerco store as I was passing by. The lady working wasn't very welcoming. I noticed I didn't have my mask with me like normal (sinceI live in a county that doesnt require them) so I walked in to see if they had complimentary ones. The first thing out of her mouth was, "You absolutely need a mask." Since the whole vibe was off I decided to not even ask and just spend my money somewhere else. read more

If you're looking to go in, buy yarn, and get out, BSYS has a great selection. The prices reflect the quality of yarns, but they do have really nice wools, blends, alpaca, and everything in between. However, the service is terrible. As someone who works in customer support, I say this quite seriously. The woman who worked with my coworker and me was incredibly rude. She attempted to get us to buy more yarn than we needed (and we were already spending about $120 together), which I can deal with. I've worked in sales, too, so I get it. Whatever. But the snarky tone of voice and passive aggression was completely unacceptable. I am a polite and grateful person, so this stuck me as very odd. This woman scowled at us the entire time ringing up our purchase, and took a half hour to wind our 8 small skeins of yarn. At one point she stopped to chat with the knitting group and look at pictures. The yarn store by my house has a broken swift and winder and it takes them maybe 10 minutes to do twice as much yarn, while assisting other customers. We waited patiently, and when we said thank you and went to leave, we were met with silence and a glare. One of the worst experiences I've ever had, and definitely the worst at a craft store. I wouldn't go back if the entire store was 50% off. read more

Big store with lots of yarns. I was approached very soon after entering which resulted in my leaving the store quickly too. Had they given me time to browse, I might have bought something, since I have a gift certificate. I was looking for a specific yarn, Alafoss lett lopi, and asked the sales person where their lopi might be. "Oh, we don't carry that" she said. Full stop. Not let me order it for you, not but we do have..., after an awkward moment I said that I'm sorry they don't have it, that I have a gift certificate, ... Silence no invitation to look around. I left. I should say that many years ago I ran a yarn shop in Philadelphia. I knit a lot! Unfortunate experience here. read more

I have been to Black Sheep Yarn Shop several times and have found the people there pleasant, knowledgeable and kind. Their selection is extensive, the store is comfortable and enjoyable to be in. I have gone in with my 7 year old who is a fiber lover, and the ladies there have been wonderful with her. They have a good selection and variety of both independent dyers' products as well as larger vendor fibers. My only complaint is that they are too far away from where we live for me to pop in more often! read more

I don't get up to Timonium often, but since I was in the area anyway I was curious to see if the previous review was correct. We knitters really respond to atmosphere and love talking about our projects with others who share our enthusiasm. When I first went into Black Sheep I was a bit uncertain. There was a lot of chatter at the table, but no one came to ask if I needed help. I wandered for a few minutes -- their selection of yarns is very nice, and I like the way they are organized. However, after a few minutes I was approached, and from then on the experience became increasingly more enjoyable. I was looking for yarn to make a fair isle sweater that required 5 different colors plus a background. The helpful staff person (whose name I can't remember) did a great job of helping me select the colors. We even used her ipad to go on Ravelry to check out the pattern. I ended up making a purchase I'm pleased with and look forward to making the sweater. So, I guess my impression is that the staff is not as unfriendly as the previous reviewer presented. Could they be a bit quicker to welcome someone -- particularly when it appears the person is new to the shop and not immediately going to a particular purchase -- yes. However, once contact was made the service was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I will go back again. read more

I recently visited the Black Sheep Yarn Shop - when they had their St. Patrick's Day Happy Hour. It was a fun time - Donna and another lady working that evening were very pleasant and helpful. The yarn selection is excellent, and I got some great deals on some 50% off yarns. Donna sat down with me and answered some questions that I had about yarn weights - she was very helpful, as always. I'm sorry to read other's less-than-steller experiences at the Black Sheep Yarn Shop. My daughter and I had a very good first-time experience there. We came in looking to learn more about and potentially purchase a loom plus the yarn and supplies needed to get weaving as soon as possible. The store's owner(?) was incredibly helpful and well-informed. Although she did leave us from time to time to answer questions from folks who were knitting up front and to respond to the phone, we never felt abandoned. I'd anticipated that I'd end up spending a fortune on gear and fiber. I was very impressed by the advice the store owner provided: Wait. Go home, do a little more research and planning so you know what you really need. There's no need to spend a fortune on your first project. I'm astounded this wonderful little shop would get bad reviews...to each her own, I guess. I always find something beautiful at Black Sheep. In my experience, the staff are warm, helpful, and knowledgeable--ALL of them. I always leave thinking about and eager to start a new and exciting project because of the staff's joyful attitude about knitting. I've taken many advanced classes at Black Sheep, including double knitting, stranded colorwork, and brioche, to name a few. Local yarn shops are in danger of disappearing and, if they do, where will we be? They allow us to actually see and feel the materials of our creations beforehand. We can know the exact color and softness of the yarn. I usually fall in love with the yarn first and then choose what to make with it. Please give Black Sheep a chance. I'm sure you will be rewarded. I bring a good friend to the shop who no longer drives, so I am in a position to have observed the store over several years. Previously, my friend was helped by women who seemed incredibly knowledgeable about knitting, the yarns, etc. She was welcomed warmly, and I was, as well. More recently, at the Deereco Road location (twice now over a number of months), my friend was ignored in favor of a few employees chatting away and giving her and I a cursory and wordless, unfriendly glance. Most recently, I dropped off my friend, coming in after her. I entered and found the most extremely unfriendly employee chatting it up, but then turning as I entered. She virtually ran to the door, blocking my way in the aisle, and said tersely, "May I help you?". It reminded me of stories of trolls and dragons at the gate. I said no and continued on where my friend was in the back, engaged in a lively convo and session with one of the previous owners, who happened to be there. Goodness knows why these "new" folks staff/run a store when they obviously have such a dislike for strangers. read more
