I came to Mandy after a few years of chronic hip and low back pain. I had been seeing chiropractors, a massage therapist, cranial sacral therapist and a physical therapist for many months, with only a little progress. I came to Body Mechanics after reading about Mandy's dual approach of energy work and Pilates. I knew that I was ready to gain strength, and also knew that many of my issues were energetic in nature (holding old energy patterns). Let's say that I had a good feeling about trying it out. My first session with Mandy left me buzzing from my toes to the top of my head. Her powerful energy work helped me to release a ton of tension just in that first session. In my time at Body Mechanics since then, I've gained a lot of strength, insight, and empowerment. It was the first work that I'd done where I felt like I was driving my own healing, as opposed to passively receiving healing (which certainly has a place!). The studio has a great vibe and I'm excited to try out the Pilates classes there and experience the other teachers...they all have great energy!

I have received private lessons as well as group lessons from Eric and in my opinion he is a great teacher. I have primarily studied beginning ballet with him, as well as Argentine Tango, and group classes which incorporate basic fitness/pilates/barre exercises. Eric does a great job at teaching both the choreography and the form of the various dances and exercises we practice in class. But what is equally important is that I I don't get bored or frustrated in class. He has amazing patience (I am 36 and learning ballet for the first time, if that tells you anything) and a great sense of humor which keeps the class relaxed and interesting. No tedious treadmill here, and no nasty looks when you don't do the moves properly right off the bat. He is also truly a professional and teaches to professional standards. I would definitely recommend him as a teacher.

I have never done any "alternative therapy" healing or any healing because I successfully care for myself, am healthy, on no medications and have only seen a doctor once in the last 30 years for an injured knee. Well, the instructor mentioned Shelly Stephenson as a resource and her chosen modality. Wow! What a smart, knowledgeable, good-humored, effective, down-to-earth practitioner! That she (in a former life) was an accomplished dancer lends factual credence that she knows the human anatomy, not just from books, coursework and clinical settings, but also from her personal artist-athlete experience. I did 10 structural integration sessions with Shelly, Shelly did all the work. My body flows like it hasn't flowed since I was a teenager. One day, after a session with Shelly, I noticed that I take short little steps when briskly walking, and realized that was my bodies learned compensation and I could now take longer strides with ease. I had never had that perspective before. On the basketball court, for the first time, I could dribble between my legs as the length of my stride was enough to now allow the ball to pass through. That was another recognition that my body has changed, more optimally, its relationship with itself. And yoga? In the mirrors, though I can do some poses well, many asanas are accomplished better, I have much more grace of movement and range of motion. I feel good. I am hip. And if Shelly sees that a different approach will be better for you, she will gladly refer you to someone of quality she knows in the vast world of Portland's healing modalities. Pilates with Shelly has made me more flexible and much stronger. I recently did a series of KMI sessions with Shelly. Each session focuses on a different area, but is adapted to suit particular needs. In my case, Shelly helped greatly with my chronic lower back and hip pain, freeing up areas that felt "stuck." My muscles feel longer and my posture is better. I feel like I am moving more freely. KMI is amazing, and Shelly is great!
