Lots of thoughts! I try a different yoga studio when traveling and this time met a friend at…read morePowerglow. Overall, it was "ok," specifics to follow: One room for practice and a ton of surrounding space; changing rooms, multiple bathrooms, a cool little "library" and various lobby crystals. Disconcerting teacher and class. The "shanti shanti shanti" chat is weird and off-putting; not the first time I have heard it, but it gives cult. The teacher was equally off-putting to me; the main reason is she ignored my request not to be touched for adjustments. Anyone not wanting assistance was asked to raise a leg in down dog, and she later ignored it to try to touch me twice, and she also felt the need to move blocks closer to me since she wanted us to use them. It was cool to try to use blocks to help me transition from cheetah pose to low lunge, except I sweat too much and the blocks became slippery....so I knew why I was choosing not to use them. She did apologize after, which I told her was appreciated. I'm a devotee of vinyasa flow classes and get aggravated with classes that mix and muddle the different traditions so it isn't clear what kind of class you are leading. One thing I have noticed as I try new studios is that the ease with which you can use their website to register for class *and communicate with the studio* is a reliable indicator of how well run the space is. Emails about the spaces for our class that I had reserved and whether my friend could use one I bought were not answered in the two days before class, so we had to show up to know if my friend had a spot. My friend thought the class itself was great; I was glad I had the chance to do yoga with my friend.

I knew nothing about yoga, and ended up going to the hot yoga class, which was truly a work out, I never expected. I don't work out, I walk. That's about as physical as I get. i'm about to hit 60 in June and felt that I needed to try something to slow the progression of aches and pains and stiffness. So with much trepidation I decided to give this class a shot and I'm so glad I did. The staff and customers are wonderful. No pretense, no airs & graces, just the love of yoga. The space is beautiful and relaxing clean which is a feeling of serenity even though you're going to work every muscle in your body. In fact, muscles you never knew you had. After that first class of hot yoga I was hooked, even though I was exhausted. Nevertheless, I joined for $75 for the month with the full price to be deducted each month. I like the fact that you can cancel whenever you want. I've since booked a couple more classes, different ones, basic ones to learn the whole yoga jargon.. If you're on the fence, definitely give Powerglo a shot. They offer several different sessions, which are all online easy to book easy to cancel!!

The classes are mostly one hour, but a couple are a little bit longer, and you will definitely feel like you got a good workout. Most of the moves are pretty traditional yoga poses and you can look around at your neighbors if you're not sure what to do. Where the challenge comes in is that the temperature is about 90 while you workout, hence the sweat. But it seriously feels so good. Virginia is an amazing instructor and I really appreciate her emphasis on going at your own pace and ability. If you are looking for something different to mix up your workout routine, or ate just looking for an awesome yoga class, I definitely recommend Charleston Power Yoga.

I'll start with the good, because it was excellent and more than 5 stars: the teacher, Crystal (sp?). The gentleman next to me told me before class that her background was in dance and her flow was indeed creative, incorporated poses and transitions new to me along with familiar ones. The $30 drop in rate was totally worth it for her class! Alas. I am gobsmacked that the studio doesn't have a water fountain. The slightly snippy gent at the front desk pointed to the cooler where I could buy water and said they take cards. What? I found the tiny bathroom in the back and filled my bottle with tap water, TYVM. As the same friendly gent at the mat next to me said "I'd neve thought about it but as a visitor that would make me mad too." Excellent teacher, underwhelming basics at the studio, won't return.

Some yoga studios try really hard to prove how traditional and "ultra spiritual" they can be, but Satsang is authentic and rich in a way that I seldom encounter in a little over a decade of practicing in many cities. The facility is beautiful, hardwood flooring, and natural light, with an altar that serves as the centerpiece or orientation for practice. Everything there is very friendly. As a New Yorker, it can almost be confusing at first, but I like it. Sometimes I have found that the yoga classes I have taken elsewhere fall short in incorporating teachings on the other limbs of yoga practice; meaning, they teach asana -- the physical postures -- and maybe some pranayama -- breathing techniques -- but not much by way of ethical observances, concentration techniques, meditation. Both Andrea and Jeffrey are skillful teachers and it is clear that they have both devoted themselves to understanding and executing the teachings of yoga, for one cannot teach with as much heart and sincerity as they do if they do not study and practice earnestly. As for the physical practice, suffice it to say that a very strong and mobile 30-year-old with 12 years of practice was challenged and inspired alongside people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and even 70s, some with more experience than others. I can say from my own experience teaching, it is not always easy to teach to such a varied group, but these teachers know how to do it because of many years of dedicating themselves. They both gave a lot of individual attention to every student in the room, moving around to offer assists and adjustments, and an absolutely sublime neck rub at the end of practice while resting. I cherish those experiences because I offer those things a lot to my students, but I don't get them much when I take classes myself. I wish I could practice with them daily, but alas, I do not live in Charleston year-round. I visit a few times a year and I will definitely return when I am back. Emphatically recommend.

I usually frequent the West Ashley location, but it is only a few months old so it's not yet on Yelp. Emily Valentine teaches core vinyasa on Sundays, and it is always a great time! She has an amazing playlist and is always motivating and supportive. I always leave feeling like I really worked out my whole body and I am ALWAYS sore the next few days, but it's a good feeling because I know I worked hard in Emily's class! I also highly recommend their assisted deep stretch class. It's very relaxing and it feels so good to stretch and take your mind off of everything going on. The studio spaces are always clean and well taken care of. There's only been a couple times where a class was really crowded, but we always make it work!

All that could have been ok if the class had been ... enjoyable enough to do. Why did the teacher have a headpiece for screaming instructions, when there is no way the room wouldn't be covered just fine by her voice. I tried for about fifteen minutes, trying to follow her sometimes muted screaming by looking around me. I gave up and went to the front desk where they kindly said this was normal and offered me a cup of earplugs to pick from. I took them and used them for about three minutes when I gave up. The place purposefully makes it so loud that they have odes of earplugs in a cute little jar on the counter. That's just messed up. I usually do vinyasa flow, my friend does Bikram and neither of us really knew what this class was. Worst $30 one a class pass ever.
