I've been a KUSC listener for over 50 years but since the transition to Classical California the…read morestation has become practically unlistenable. I agree with the sentiments of the 1and2 star comments. I tune in the morning... acoustic guitar. I tune in in the afternoon, acoustic guitar. I tune in in the evening - and what do I hear? You guessed it - ACOUSTIC GUITAR. On a daily basis. Don't get me wrong, I even play acoustic guitar and used to welcome Rodrigo et. al. from time to time. It makes me wonder if the programming dept. is attempting to pander to some particular untapped donor base or perhaps it's a personal preference of someone high-up. Along with their habit of playing single movements, war-horses over and over, film, game music and the random contemporary tonally banal composers it's become a Classical Light Easy Listening Station. No wonder Jim took off running.

Classical KUSC is now "Classical Lite," playing only snippets of works. This afternoon they played…read moreonly the first movement of Dvorak serenade for winds, doing violence to Dvorak's masterpiece. Multimovement pieces - symphonies, concertos, etc. - are whole works by their composers, not independent pieces arbitrarily stuck together. In the Dvorak piece the first movement anticipates the last movement, unifying his creation. Playing only the first movement is like playing only the first 20 minutes of a 90 minute film. KUSC is doing violence to classical music and demeaning classical composers.

From Zeppelin to Van Halen to Deep Purple to Pink Floyd to Pearl Jam to STP.....I could go on and on!! I grew up listening to these classics! Yes, the play list can get repetitive at times but......I can't complain! These are my jams! Whenever "Running with the Devil" starts playing, I crank it up all the way, pretending I'm Eddie Van Halen rocking out that guitar solo or David Lee Roth singing my brains out!!! Not too many radio stations have it like Jack FM does. Call in your request and have the legendary Jack conversate with you! Hey.....its only because Jack said so!!

*** I recently attended a screening hosted by KCRW, The Document. ***…read more The movie was titled "Maiden" about the Whitbread Round the World yacht race. It was a grueling open-ocean race dominated historically by only men. But in 1989, a young woman put together an all-female crew to challenge that. The Document invited hundreds of KCRW members to attend, so I RSVP'd. And I'm glad that I did. This film is inspirational. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/writers-guild-theater-beverly-hills-2?select=mGn0PJVXuasfx_E_5a1E9g I am not a woman and I don't sail, yet even I was inspired by this story. These women sailed the sea for about six months against tremendous odds (including the Southern Ocean off the coast of Antartica). Amazing! That inspires me to challenge myself much more in my life as a result. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/writers-guild-theater-beverly-hills-2?select=LMNKf0eXIqhQnlkXLtAKaw There were several food trucks and complimentary wine followed by a Q&A with the yacht captain Tracy Edwards and "Maiden" director Alex Holmes. Overall, a very nice event held at the Writer's Guild theatre. *** I don't subscribe to KCRW for its perks, but nice to partake. ;p ***
