I called to find emergency dv services for a family member. It was extremely hard to hear the person on the phone for the intake. She asked to speak to the family member personally, and when my relative asked her if she could speak louder the rep said that "wasn't her problem". We reiterated that the call was very quiet and muffled and she rudely responded that we needed to call back later. They also did not ask if we were safe or needed emergency services. It felt like she was annoyed with us and we were inconveniencing her. This was very heartbreaking because we assumed a 24/7 resource hotline would care about helping us. It's already hard enough to make a call like that but it's worse when you're treated so callously. read more

I want to start by acknowledging that the mission did help me get back on my feet, and I'm grateful for that. There are good staff members there, and my progress was partly because of them. That said, the organization itself--and the conduct of some staff--deserves serious scrutiny. As a nonprofit that brings in millions in donations, many of the decisions and conditions are not just confusing--they're unacceptable. There's a clear disconnect between available resources and how basic issues are handled. Take the daily "bread run" as a simple example. For nearly a year, residents had to move heavy loads through doors that wouldn't stay open, resorting to propping them with rocks. This created obvious safety risks and unnecessary hassle. The solution--a few inexpensive door stops--was ignored for months. When new doors were finally installed, one of the stops was already broken within days and, based on past patterns, will likely stay that way. It's a small issue, but it reflects a broader culture of neglect. Discipline in the men's dorm is handled in a way that feels lazy and unjust. Instead of addressing individuals responsible for misconduct, the default response is to punish everyone. During my year-long stay, the gym was open for perhaps a month total. It remained closed the rest of the time because of the actions of a few individuals. Collective punishment like this only breeds resentment and discouragement. More concerning is the handling of basic necessities like drinking water. Residents are expected to refill bottles using shower water--water that is extremely hard, comes through lines that are not properly maintained, and often sits at unsafe temperatures. I personally got sick from it, and when I raised concerns, they were dismissed outright. That's not just dismissive--it's negligent. The most serious issue, however, is staff misconduct. I personally witnessed staff taking donated items for their own use, including food and higher-value goods meant for the thrift store. Some of these items later appeared for sale online. The most blatant example was after the Christmas toy drive. While the event itself helped many families, leftover donations were not handled with integrity. One staff member alone took multiple truckloads of toys and bikes home--amounting to thousands of dollars in donated goods. This wasn't subtle, and it certainly wasn't appropriate. Donors would likely think twice if they knew how some of their contributions were being handled. There's also a fundamental issue with how residents are treated. Not everyone experiencing homelessness is struggling with addiction, yet everyone is forced into the same programming, including mandatory recovery meetings. Combined with required "skills training" labor, daily church activities, and the pressure of finding actual employment, it becomes an inefficient and often counterproductive use of time. Finally, the hypocrisy within leadership is hard to ignore. In a Christian-based program, you would expect leaders to model the behavior they require from residents. Instead, I witnessed a program leader regularly skip daily devotionals while still addressing the group afterward. That kind of inconsistency undermines any message they're trying to deliver. This mission has the resources and potential to do real good--but those strengths are being undermined by poor oversight, questionable priorities, and, in some cases, outright misconduct. Until those issues are addressed, the gap between what the organization claims to be and what it actually is will remain hard to ignore. read more

It is a place where people do a lot of good, but the food and beds are horrible. The food is donated or expired, sometimes cold and unexplainably bad. They have a building in the back named annex it's an emergency shelter that has horrible chairs that hurt their backs. The phone chargers never work, the restroom is constantly broken down or full. They have these things they call boats that are not used properly they are upside down and the staff doesn't allow them to use them properly. They force you to flip them upside down and put the cheap mats inside them. Which means they are too small and can hurt you. The lockers don't have locks so people can steal stuff from each other. The clothes are never Nike or any good. There is no camera or security guard on the property so people are constantly feeling insecure. read more

I am keeping my name anonymous for my safety and success, but these are things that need to be known. This place is not a reputable place. I can concur on the corruption. And the other review with Darren is true. This place takes full advantage of not having anywhere else to go and makes your life miserable for their own enjoyment. All masquerading behind a facade of Christianity. I have followed every rule being here, so it's not hard for me, but I see the way they treat other people. This place is filled with people who do not want to better themselves, and those who do receive little, if any, help from staff. Don't even get me started about Sosa. He is a staff member in the Annex that will sit there and intentionally antagonize you for his own enjoyment, with no consequences. Writing grievances does nothing. Mr. Douglas, the man in charge, says he will send the grievances to management and then never does. Mr. Douglas has been caught writing incident reports and then not filing them. Very recently, too. This place really does just pick favorites. I'm one of the favorites, but these are my observations of the most corrupt organization in Coachella Valley. I came here because I was homeless, wanting to get a job and get back on my feet, and they make that damn near impossible. They provide very little useful services aside from a bed with a 1 inch thick pad on the ground, in a room with 60 other men at any given time. Also if you come here and there's no locker for you then your stuff sits in a corner. If you have anything REMOTELY valuable it WILL BE stolen. read more

Received an envelope in the mail the other day it started off pleasant paying out $1.88 to feed someone for Thanksgiving dinner. But when I open and read it all it asked for more and more money . I'm going to take the envelope along with $5 in it and deliver it to someone in authority in person with no return address I suggest others do this to to reduce spam they receive in the mail also remember if you give to them they will share your personal information and you'll soon be bombarded with dozens and dozens of requests for money from all types of organizations & characters! Na, on second thought I'm not bringing or giving them anything! read more

The guy in charge, Darin is big on negative reinforcement, rudeness, sarcasm, cynicism and has no business around people in need. People go there when they have no where else to go and he uses that disadvantage against them. read more

This place is more of a money trap than anything, using unfortunate circumstances in people as the cover up. I stayed there and although was very humble and gracious at being able to stay with my daughter, however, they ruthlessly kicked us to the curb forcing us out. No longer being welcoming and just turned rude and cold. You obey all of there rules and then suddenly they find 'reason' to kick you out. They play favorites and let certain people break rules over and over with no consequences. My daughter had a package being delivered there shortly after they kicked us out. A very expensive gift for her that 'mysteriously' vanished after it was proved to be delivers there. They let anyone in, people I knew would go do drugs and come back high asf near children and other recovering addicts. They are the worse and honestly living in my car was refreshing compared to the bs they have there. Claiming to be religious and 'make' you go to church or u get kicked out and yet the Hippocrates are the ones running the show.. walk throughs of ppl donating was a joke, everyone on your best behavior, soo fake. I had high hopes for my stay there but they are awful. You come to them for help and they pick and choose what they want to help you with. All of this is true I barely recovered from being homeless due to their unfairness. Alot of shady activity behind the scenes. I know because I stayed there for a while. read more

This program changed my life. Everything opportunity is what you make of it in life. This program helped me to stop blaming everyone else for my personal choices and to start taking control of my life so that I could make changes and break dysfunctional cycles. Sometimes the truth hurts and it's not always what we want to hear but it's what is best for helping us grow so if you truly want to get better and stop living an empty life full of dysfunction and chaos than I would highly recommend putting everything you have into this program. You have nothing to lose but bad habits and everything to gain. I have almost 9 years clean, my children back, an amazing husband of 7 years and we have a wonderful life as home owners, I have my own business. I started off homeless before I got to the mission. I wouldn't have any of this if it wouldn't of been for the love and prayers and the people at the mission. This program works if do the work! read more

Gateway gave me tools and tough love to battle through every hardship. I had many things on my mind, and still today I face and them. But as of this day, I find more and of those hardships to be more, and more, easier to understand and confide. The Coachella Valley Rescue Mission gave me the support when I was undeserving. The Mission gave me hope when I stopped trying. The Mission gave me a roof right over my head. And surely enough I gave in.
