Coast Walk Trail stretches along Coast Drive south of La Jolla Cove. Street only Parking can be a challenge. This trial is among a favorite of my pup Fendi and myself. The terrain for the most part is natural and some recreated by the city using indigenous flora to be consistent with the rest of the coastal greenery. Especially like that your views of the ocean is unobstructed and easily accessible for those that are physically able to. I've only seen about 3 flights of stairs from the bluff to the beach. Be Careful! The steps are jagged stone/concrete and not equally measured. Whether you're walking along the upper bluffs or closer to the beach, it's exploratory and the salty cool beach breeze is exhilarating to start your day or with the sunset to end your day. This is an amazing place to see sea lions and seabirds! The walk is easy, and there's no need to pay to walk down to the cave in my opinion. The views from the top of the bluff are fabulous! There are easy access areas to view the wildlife if anyone in your group has mobility challenges. Bring binoculars for additional entertainment as the sea lions and birds are everywhere and active. We were fortunate enough to be here during nesting season for the cormorants and so were able to see babies of varying ages. Definitely don't miss this if you're in the LaJolla area. read more

For what it is, the Coastal Walk Trail in La Jolla is short but unforgettable, roughly half-a-mile of cliffside path with sweeping views of the Pacific, towering sandstone formations, sea lions basking nearby, and seabirds riding the surf breeze. We started the trek at the La Jolla cove which adds a little distance. The trail is mostly easy, with benches for resting, though parts are uneven or narrow. A VERY short, but scenic trail. Start just outside The Cave Store and you'll find a very scenic walk. One of the most beautiful views in San Diego. You walk along the coast, cross a wooden bridge then it's over and you have to walk back. Very easy walk, not even a hike. The only cons are; in the beginning you start by the sea cliffs where lots of sea birds roost so it smells like the penguin area at SeaWorld (a mixture of rotten fish and bird poop) There isn't much parking so visit early in the morning but the trail is short so walking isn't so much an issue. To find it just go to the Cave Store. After your walk/hike consider going into the cave store and pay to walk down the stairs to see the inside of the cave or go to one of the kayak shops on Avenida De La Playa and do a kayak tour of the cave (depending on conditions) I used to tell out of town guest to visit La Jolla cove to look at the sea lions, I think this might be a better option or at least another place for them to visit. read more

The trail was first built in 1932, although it was believed to have been used some 9,500 years ago by Native Americans as an access point for hunting and fishing. It has an interesting history. I highly recommend this Trail to anyone visiting La Jolla.  The natural beauty is awesome. For about a year, we lived a 300 ft or so from Coast Walk, and used the Trail frequently to walk into/from La Jolla Village.  The trail rather meanders near the edge of a bluff overlooking La Jolla Bay. The trail is unpaved, uneven terrain bordered by great plants that flower at different times of the year.  There are benches along the way.  Stop to enjoy the views or just to rest.  At the Village (western) end, you can look down at La Jolla Cove with its sea lions, as well as the famous La Jolla Caves.  When you reach the end, you can continue your walk on Coast Blvd to La Jolla Cove or find your way up to Prospect Street ... and the Village. Very limited street parking on Coast Walk.  No restrooms on the trail. read more

Wow! Talk about a beautifully manicured trail with epic views! I walked the trail and picked a bench to sit on (there are benches throughout) to enjoy watching the waves crash in and the kayaking tours over the water. This is a great, safe space to find some quiet time and reflection as you gaze over the open ocean! Definitely recommend this spot and the trail is easy with minimal inclines! While staying in LaJolla we heard about the views from this beautiful walk, so we stopped by one morning, around 9AM. There are two parking spots off of Coast Walk Trail (the actual road, prior to Prospect Rd), and we were fortunate to grab one when arriving. The views are amazing from here! The cove below, the walking trails and foliage, and the wildlife, mostly birds that you'll see are all beautiful! We walked a little way before turning around, but will definitely return and walk more of this amazing trail. read more

Wow! What a great way to see San Diego! My partner and I went to visit some friends and decided to go on a nice walk before we went to brunch. We were not disappointed. I loved seeing the ocean, the seals? And the nature along this trail. It's good for walking, but be ready to do a little bit of hiking. It's right on the edge of the cliff. Scenic trail and super easy for children. It is quite short so don't expect anything crazy. The entrance is by the Cave Store. You can also hike down to the cliffs which can be a little slippery but the view is well worth it. read more

Nice short trail by the cliffs. Great view and has benches to sit on to rest and take in the beautiful view! The trail ends by residential homes so we ended up turning around and walking back to where we started. Nice gift shop at the beginning of the trail, The Cave Store where you can go in and pay to go down a long flight of stairs to a cave below. Pretty fun but be careful going down as the steps can get slippery. Always a fun, great time in this area. read more

Well It was Easter Sunday and we decided on an easy Trail to hike so Coast Trail came to mind . As you arrive it is located right next to La Jolla Cove and it is an easy hike for everyone !! You just got to arrive early because the parking can fill up fast and you might have to drive around to find parking . Well it was sprinkling when we came but still an amazing trail to hike . As we got lucky once again we found parking really close to the trail . As we got started on our hike we can see the beautiful beach from the trail and it makes taking pictures amazing !! Seeing all the birds and seagulls flying around and sitting on the rocks below right next to the waves crashing against the rocks . It's an hike I would say you must experience and it does not take long to finish . Lots of Greenery and beautiful flowers along the trail also !! It's one hike we really enjoyed and I still have to comeback and walk again !! Overall we enjoyed it and after your hike you just walk over to La Jolla Cove and enjoy seeing the seals and sea lions relaxing and chilling on the rocks below !! I surely see myself coming back and enjoying it again !!! read more

La Jolla's Coastal Walk is the place to check out the many sea lions and seals lounging about. One of the best places to spot them is an area called "Children's Pool." Your kids won't be able to swim here, but it's well worth the journey to see the waves crashing and hear the sea lions calling out. Once again, my daughter Ava was thrilled to see the animals and squealed "dog" in excitement. Something tells me, I'm going to need to help expand her animal vocabulary after this trip! The coastal trail wraps around the waterfront for about 3 miles. But you can easily scale this back if you want to. The beauty of this trail is that you're just steps away from downtown La Jolla and its busy commercial district filled with bakeries, shops and cafes. So once you get tired, you can always just cut off the trail and head into town. Note, it's not the easiest to travel with a stroller, so I recommend bringing the kids along in baby backpack carriers if joining with little ones. read more

My favorite section is up the hill starting at Goldfish Cafe. You get great views of the cliffs overlooking the ocean. Dirt trail with pretty wildflower landscaping by homes on the other side. Down by the cove you can enjoy the plethora of wildlife, and the rest of the trail is a concrete path along the shoreline. read more

Coast Walk Trail was right outside of the Cave Store so we checked it out and the views are beautiful and I've never seen anything like it. We did a little bit of hiking on part of the trail but mainly sat on the benches and took in the views. There is a small underground parking structure a few steps away so make sure to find parking as close as possible. If you visit the Cave Store, you should really check it out too! read more

Probably one of my favorite places to watch the sun go down. You can see everything from the sitting area. Small park area near by so you can sit and watch if you're trying to social distance since the walk area gets pretty tight. Living in SD is a amazing blessing. The cost is high, yes.. but the benefits are often well worth it. Living by so many breath taking beaches, mountains, city, nature... it's all here except snow! Well, unless you count the rare fluff 3,000 ft(?) above in the mountains! I admit that I'm not much of a fan of crowds and summer isn't grabs with tourist season at its height. I also deal with physical disabilities and the more, it can be difficult to walk in the sand, move in the water, find necessary shade not crowded with people.. and on... don't get me started on parking even with the HandiCrap placard :) La Jolla shores is definitely a very popular destination and so the whole preface is now more relevant... we 'discovered' Coast Walk Trail on the quiet in down the small curved elevated street on Top of a cliff and basically 10 areas you can park, if that! I'm not a fan of heights at all so getting to this spot and parking scares the heck out of me but the sacrifice is worth it!! There are a couple of benches and a large beautiful view of much of La Jolla shores. It's breezy, relaxing and rarely crowded when I've gone... even when people are there, seems like they don't stay long perhaps due to parking and not being on the actual beach (they can have it!) One day, I started exploring the trail and although I've never even walked half of it, I was extremely happy that it, at least on that side, is not like a open road rough path in the dirt but a pier like platform trail with protection and wooden railing to grip. It's not wheelchair accessible or anything but not entirely physically demanding either. I mean... I am very chunky.... I have major chronic pain issues and autoimmune diseases that effect my mobility, mild breathing issues and so on. I use assistive devices at times (forearm crutches, walker, wheelchair) but often just my two legs. There are uneven platforms and steps but, again... manageable for many like me! This is incredibly exciting because nature trails, hikes and such things are usually pretty much off limits to people with physical limitations unless very mild. I hope to walk further along to explore and I have taken my crutches or hiking poles (even better... surprisingly supportive)... on the trail. I love taking pictures, looking at the sea vessels, plants, critters, cliffs and the quiet! I wish I could say more about the trail from my unique perspective but hopefully in the near future. I discovered this trail on accident by turning on the wrong street almost 10 years ago! I can always find one of the 3 entrances by looking for the Dead End sign. That's my favorite entrance but there's one halfway through the trail on the right off of Prospect Place street and a 3rd entrance by the cave tours. This trail is the perfect romantic spot for a good conversation. It's also neat to enjoy a good warm drink on a cold day or smoothie on a hot one. You'll see kayakers, parasailers, tourists, and selfie sticks on this short trail. It's a little short of a half mile. Nice stroll and has a lot of benches to enjoy the view! read more
