First time to try coastal climbing. Place was very busy so not able to try out all the surfaces. Most are on an angle and require lots of upper body strength. Flooring is all cushioned and walls not high so ropes and harness not required. Really enjoyed the tread wall which is a moving rock climbing apparatus. Easy to adjust speed. Parking horrible but we found a lot just a couple blocks down by the church where you can pay online to park. read more

Took the first time class which is essentially a crash course for all things bouldering. I didn't have any prior experience so I would highly recommend it because they teach you safety, basics, techniques, about the gym, etc. Kirsten was the instructor and cannot recommend her enough either. She was knowledgeable, encouraging, and also let me try and critically think the route of what she was wanting me to do but helped me through at the same time. The gym also has workout equipment too which I found neat, that way you don't have to have multiple memberships at gyms. read more

Updating because a lot of the climbs are dependent on being a certain height. It's possible to train strength on certain types of moves but it's not possible to train to become bigger. Because of the way climbs are set, a V4 for a person 5'9" becomes a V6 for a person under 5'3" and this means that there are very few opportunities for smaller people to bridge the gaps in their skill sets. Average height for American women is 5'3" and with 51% of the population being female, I'd like to see more climbs that rely on technique than length. read more

My only complaint is that the building wasn't big enough. I used to be a frequent at a place in Georgia called stone summit. They had shoe rentals, chalk, and enough different projects to keep anyone busy Enjoyed the workout. Fun place to climb! The moving mats were a bit scary as the pads underneath were not very soft. The walls were definitely a bit more challenging than I am used to in New York- maybe a full grade up? Overall, a fun experience! The power did go out for a while during our visit, which was the only downside. read more

Best climbing gym in Charleston! They're a little out of the way, but this place is located on Upper King. Their parking lot was under construction last time I went so parking can be annoying and it's Downtown so it's limited. I've been here about 3 times with friends. The guy that watches the front is really friendly. My friends and I were relatively new to rock climbing, but he walked us through everything the facility has to offer and the fair pricing plans that they have. If it's your first time here, they have you sign a waiver that you acknowledge that rock climbing is obviously dangerous, blah blah, may cause death. Also, there's a 10 minute safety video that they make you watch. As far as the facilities go, they only offer bouldering here and no top-roping. There are two floors with various walls that you can climb. Having climbed gyms in Columbia and Chicago, this place seemed size in comparison, but that's typical of downtown businesses. The difficulties of the walls are color coded and correspond to a numerical number. They have a wall for everyone! Pro or noob, everyone should be able to do something. The floors are well patted so falls aren't as bad. I consider the upper floor to be harder as there's a wall with a crazy incline and hard rocks to grip onto. For monthly members, they have free yoga classes, a small gym, and a treadmill rock climbing wall available. What's also nice is that the wall layouts change roughly every two weeks so you don't get bored. They're very creative with the challenges that they come up with and they let everyone vote on the difficulty of the new problems. After coming here once, I decided to get the 10 Climb pass for $99. Sadly, they raised the price soon after to $119, but I think it's the best value for people who don't have time to regularly climb all the time. Also, it's cheaper than a regular daypass and can be used on your friends. Climbing shoes cost $4, a chalk bag costs $2, but getting the two together costs $5. Checking in on Yelp also earns you a free chalk bag. They also have some specials sometimes like "Ladies Night" every third Friday of the month where girls get 50% off a daypass. The climbers here are really nice, I was able to make new friends easily with people that have been doing this for years and those who just started. It's not awkward to talk to the people next to you for help and everyone is very open. They also have climbing classes and a climbing club that you can join to meet new people. Overall, I recommend this facility to anyone who's interested in rock climbing in Charleston, beginner or expert. read more

Great climbing facility with an extremely helpful and friendly staff. There is plenty to climb for all levels of experience and recent renovations that have doubled the gym in size. The premium membership is incredible and gives you access to the gym 24/7 for a private climbing experience with you and your partner. Overall just a wonderful climbing gym paired with a wonderful community of members. Highly recommend others to check this place out! read more

As other reviews have pointed out, they continually improve the facility and consistently re-set the boulder problems on the walls. Coastal climbing is primarily a bouldering gym, but they also have a work-out area that has served me well. Gym isn't worth the price. Extra fees for starting and ending a membership? That's just bad business practice. I understand they're the only gym in town but charging fees similar to to gyms three fold their size with the extra fees? Was a customer for a couple years but no longer. When I started there the owner complained to me about spilling small bits of chalk because he'd have to vacuum it up later. Asking to get a spinning hold tightened always seemed like I was causing some inconvenience. Don't expect to dry your hands after you wash them - no paper towels - only the weakest hand dryer of all time. The facility is OK for being so small but I felt they were unapproachable and had the wrong attitude about customer service. read more

Came here for a quick climb during my stint in Charleston and had a great experience. For those without gear or just visiting, shoe rentals were only $3 and they actually offer both lace-up & velcro options (you can get varying degrees of fit based on which style you prefer!). I'm incredibly spoiled by the large climbing gyms in my area so I was hesitant about how seemingly small this place was. Worry not though, they make great use of the space and offer two levels of climbing with well set problems. Upstairs has a cave and traverses while downstairs has a taller wall littered with routes as well as a small workout area. read more

Laid back good vibe. CC is a "boldering" gym not a traditional climbing gym with ropes, etc. No worry about fear of heights. Great exercise. Has weights, kettleballs, etc too. Several levels so you can find what you're looking for. Upstairs is cooler but the whole place is worth the trip. read more

What Coastal lacks in size, it makes up for in a well-run gym, friendly staff, cleanliness, and well-set problems. As a long time member of Earth Treks in Rockville, MD, I find Coastal's setting to be a bit harder than what I'm used to but a welcome challenge. Having been to other high quality gyms in the country, Coastal Climbing is on par and every time I visit Charleston I make a visit (or six) to Coastal. Owner isn't the friendliest, and comes off as arrogant. For being a small business, you would think that an owner would be inclusive and friendly to all clients; but it did not seem that way at this place. Gym is small, routes are ok, and can get really busy. The cancellation fee is absurd and so expensive. Total rip off, but the owner doesn't seem to care if you go, even if you're a loyal customer and climber. Overpriced for what it is, but its the only gym in Charleston unfortunately. read more
