This used to be a really great credit union. But of course the bean counters came in and over the last 10 or 15 years, the fees kicked in, they went to virtual tellers, and got rid of anybody that had a pulse. The Wells Fargo of credit unions. They don't notify you when your adjustable rate mortgage ends, then they hit you with a late fee. They don't tell you in writing or email that you got an inactive account fee. Then they blame you and won't budge. Perhaps if they spent a little less money opening up new branches that didn't need to be there, and sponsoring the amphitheater they could take care of their customers better. I used their app to add my usaa account as it shows up and was linked the customer service said she didn't see it and I could either set up a checking with them or pay them to make a payment. I see now why nobody uses this bank. read more

We attempted to get a mortgage from this "credit union" and finally gave up after three weeks of chasing our tails. From the never ending requests for the same information, which included asking for documents with a due date a week before they asked for them. This along with insisting we payoff of a car lease 2 year. We ended the madness after they decided we needed additional mid five digit thousands to close after we bought down the rate. To anyone thinking of trying to use them, I wish you the best of luck as they disorganized and will laugh when you express frustration. read more

I have had an account with CFCU since the early 2000s. I left briefly for one year when I moved to Florida and joined a credit union there. When I moved back to North Carolina I probably switched back to CFCU. ​I'm now living in southern arizona. ​I refuse to leave cfcu. They treat me like I am such a valued member even though I'm on Social Security disability. I absolutely love the customer service and the way that they don't charge fees for every little thing. If for some reason I do get a NSF charge it's one penny generally. These guys are just the greatest! There is no credit union here in Arizona that even compares because I've checked. So I will not be switching at any time for the remainder of my life. read more

I have had an account for over 10 years with this bank. Last year after losing my job I noticed a $5 non-activity fee. I called and explained and was told as long as I logged into my account it would remain active. I logged into my account on a regular basis but noticed about 3 months ago another fee. I called and the lady said that it wasn't their fault that I was given the wrong information about logging in to keep it active. She refunded the fee but immediately took it out again. I checked my account today and realized that they take this fee every month, not just every 6 months. They drained my account..As a senior citizen, I feel like I was robbed. They have no loyalty to their customers. Seriously, how much does it cost them to keep an account open? They should be ashamed. read more

This is Coastal Federal Credit Union is their new flagship branch. It is very nice, and updated. They even have one of those single serve drink machines that dispense a variety of coffees and teas. Coastal takes pride is their Personal Teller Machines (PTM's) in all of their locations. Basically, they remodeled all of their branches to remove the live tellers and put in "virtual tellers." You wait in line to talk to a tellers over an ATM with a video screen. That is correct, they outsourced all of their tellers to some other location. They advertise that it is faster with less wait times. The branch is pretty much on autopilot. PRO: That with the new "teller machines" is that they have extended hours, even on the weekends. The branch is new and very nice looking. They give 2% interest on their Go Green checking with no minimum balance required. CON: Where is the personal service? They removed all of the people, and now you have talking to somebody over a webcam. The teller machines do not do everything. If you want to deposit certain bills, or coins, the machines will not accept them, and you will still have to see a person. If you want a roll of quarters, $2 bills, or golden dollars, you can't do that at the PTM's, so you have to go somewhere else to get it done. If the machine gets a jam, you can''t get your money, and have to find another machine, but since the machine jammed, they can't prove what you got. If their is a disconnect in the internet, or power between the bank, and the teller locations, then you can't do any banking, the banking is done all over the PTM's. I did go to the bank once before, and everything was down due to a "network error." In a regular bank, they can still take your money, and then reconcile it later, but not here. Basically, it is like an ATM, but instead of having to push all the prompts on screen, you just tell it to the person over the webcam. But I think the main thing is, where did the personal touch go? Treat me like a person who you value, not some person you really don't want to deal with, so you would rather webcam with them from across the world. I did go there earlier, there were no other customers in line, or at the PTM's, and I had to wait several minutes while the screen said "All tellers are bus" Then when I finally got a teller, she said that I could always come back on the weekend. So, there you have it. If you want that personal touch where people in the bank know you, and treat you like family, go somewhere else. If you want the convenience of being able to talk to a person over a webcam at an ATM 7 days a week from 7A-7P, go to Coastal. read more

Was on hold for 35 minutes this morning awaiting customer support. No ability to access help via chat. Nobody picks up. Awful

There were several international fraudulent charges using my debit card (the only use of it since it was issued, using only the number (not the card itself) Finally a 6th charge I was notified about. I denied the charges, yet all were paid. To verify my identity, the team asked for the card number (that was used by the fraudulent transaction), and my address (public) and my type of car (public). No secure information was requested, putting all of my accounts at risk. Customer relations reached out to say that Coastal feels like they did their job. To wrap it all, they sent me a new debit card against my request. I filed a complaint with NCUA. They refunded the charges, but this process is NOT how a bank should handle it. Beyond that - Transfers take a week. Requesting lines of credit or other things took longer to even get a response than other vendors took to put money in my account. Truly the slowest of the slow, and not secure at all. read more

This bank is slower than molasses. I started a transfer from one bank to Coastal Credit Union. It was April 21st and its now the 26th and they still have not added the $500 to savings. . They constantly change their interest rates. I was going to switch from my present institution but after this experience, I am waiting for the funds to arrive so i can remove them back out and close up with them They don't answer questions. l asked last week about this and no response. I wish I could leave negative stars. They're so cheap you can't go inside with cash. Every single one of the automated machines counts incorrectly and spews the cash back out. Beware if you're at a drive through. I am so sorry I ever opened this account. I get paid in cash and I literally don't have a way to deposit it correctly. There are very, very few branches. I have to drive 20 miles to find one. There is literally nothing offered by this credit union that you can't get somewhere else but with branches and tellers available. I'm shopping banks tomorrow. Before CFCU I was not a fan of credit unions. I didn't think they had the same base infrastructure as the big banks; I didn't think they had the same perks. I had some colleagues change my mind, and I am very grateful. I have multiple CFCU accounts and my mortgage is through them as well. With my checking and savings accounts, I earn interest on the accounts. That's right, no fees and THEY PAY ME! We shopped around our mortgage this time (learned from our previous mistakes with the big guys). CFCU was nearly a point lower. Great rates, great service and a very easy process. One of the best things about CFCU is the customer service. Somehow, while sitting neatly in my wallet in Raleigh, my debit card was used multiple times in Georgia. I had no idea. CFCU CALLS ME to tell me about these charges. They ask me about the them and if they were authorized. They then deny all but one charge and put a hold on my card. They are now sending me a new card and a form to have that one charge removed from my account and the money put back. With one of the big guys, I would not have known about these charges until after the fact, and would have had to take every step necessary. CFCU did everything for me. read more

Had horrible experience with a business account here. Tons of fees, difficult to access account online, long waits in the bank to speak to actual people. We lost so much money due to BS fees! This bank should not be considered a credit union - it has the most confusing ridiculous fees I have ever experienced. It was literally worse than Bank of America and Wells Fargo. $30 fees nonstop for things. I can't access my old statements now that I closed the account, which obviously I need to do for customers of my business. This is absurd. read more

For years, I have enjoyed the 7 to 7 feature when I was in Raleigh. It was fine for basic banking and I became comfortable to the virtual teller. On the negative side, I have always disliked the phone app. I found it to be error prone and difficult to use. The camera has a difficult time catching the check image and the "green team" has short hours. Now that I have moved out of the area, it has become a large problem as I would like to use the phone app to deposit my payroll checks. Unfortunately, Coastal holds funds for 48 hours when doing a deposit through the app. Other banks I am familiar with, such as Capital and Welcome Federal CU, give almost instant access to the funds. read more

I hate this bank. They intentionally show the wrong balance for up to 3 days and cause overdrafts so they can collect fees. So, if you make, say a credit card payment to another bank on a Monday, even though your money is gone, your account will reflect it still being there on Wednesday or even Thursday making you THINK you have more money than you actually do, thus causing an overdraft, if you rely on Coastal's records. Scary how quickly Coastal FCU is going downhill. Customer Service was already on the decline but has just accelerated since Covid-19. They've closed down multiple branches. Every time I've gone to use a teller at least one or more is out of order and there's a line of at least 4 or 5 cars. Today the entire system is down - you can't get online or call anyone. They give people the run around when attempting to sell their vehicle in which a lien is on with them. I live 2 hrs from nearest branch and can't get them on the phone and they said I must come into the branch to sell it. Do NOT do a vehicle loan with them or bank in general. They use bank checks to pay bills or transfer money from your credit card. When you or other banks use regular checks the money does not come out of your account until the intended recipient cashes it therby confirming receipt. Alternatively cfcu's bank checks come out of your account immediately but you don't know when or if your target recipient ever gets the funds until you receive some type of confirmation. Cfcu can't even tell you if it has been cashed. I don't understand how cfcu benefits from making you worry needlessly but for some reason Navy Federal and NCSECU don't need to do it this way. I have tried to ask them this question online and by calling in person but all you can reach are call center people that only say they dont know. So maybe if I write it here on yelp maybe they will read it. Like a message in a bottle. read more

I had a terrible buying experience at Lake Norman Hyundai back in late March with add-on's that I didn't want that were added to my car loan that ended up being financed through Coastal Federal Credit Union. I was fed the BS that the bank wouldn't do the deal because I wasn't putting any money down and that I had negative equity. I contacted the loan department through Coastal and asked for their assistance to contact the dealership for me and I was told that someone did. The issue is that the owner of the dealership responded to a bad review from me outlining instructions on how to cancel the extended warranty and gap...I don't need instructions. I just want to know why I wasn't given any further assistance on this matter. I asked for my payment to be pushed out since I have an active case with Hyundai Corporate or until someone could get the dealership to sign the paperwork that I sent the owner to cancel these add-on's. I don't feel that Coastal is being very accommodating due to my circumstances. I definitely feel like more could have been done taking into consideration all the issues from the dealership and non-compliance through the warranty company. read more
