This place is located on First Colonial Rd. just past the intersection with Old Donation Parkway when heading north. On my first few visits here, we were working to continue a course of treatment that would hopefully avoid surgery. This went on for several months. There was relief, but no full healing. In the end, surgery was the final recourse. The doctor I am seeing here is Dr. Juan Gelpi. A month or so before the surgery occurred, Dr. Gelpi went over the risks of surgery, what to expect, etc. He covered everything from beginning to end. At that time, I was hoping it would resolve, but by the time the new year began, I knew the surgery had to happen. In January, the surgery occurred. Prior to the surgery, he came in and told me the process of what would be happening, etc. Again, all the bases were covered and had no questions. After the surgery that day, I could already feel the relief. Now that we're a few weeks past the surgery and had the post op follow up, everything is well and back to normal. I haven't felt this good in over five years. If you are having any type of colorectal or other issues that this practice provides, I highly recommend coming here.

My recovery was much less painful than I expected, and that is due to the minimally-invasive technique she used. On a skill level, I'm very impressed. I'm not much of a reviewer but I thought my experience could help prevent someone from going…read morethrough what I continue to go through years later because of this doctor. In 2016 I had my upper jaw reconstructed/realigned by Dr. Mueller. I thought he was a godsend at the time because he made me love my smile/face. 11 months later, according to him, "my body rejected the bone graft placed." And I quickly went into surgery to fix that under his care. 4 years after initial surgery, I blew my nose and a screw comes out followed by bleeding that wouldn't stop for awhile. I called and I was told "this is normal." 3 years ago as I type this, I had swelling in my face and was living in Nevada at the time so I found a new oral maxillary facial surgeon out there and he had to put me in nearly emergency surgery to remove some hardware that was infected. This new surgeon also stated he never heard of a screw coming out of a nose after a jaw surgery. Sometime between then and now: two root canals because at least two teeth's roots were hit during the 2016 surgery and my teeth were now dying. August 2024: I had a draining fistula in my mouth near my scar tissue from the previous surgeries. I flew from Virginia to Nevada to see the new surgeon because no surgeon in Virginia will take on my case. Again I went into emergency surgery. We quickly found that Dr. Mueller put a screw into my #7 tooth (one that was attempted to save by root canal). My body had been rejecting the tooth so badly that the infection ate so much bone. I now have a huge hole in my mouth from the bone loss. 2 weeks later, I have to go into emergency extraction of that tooth. Last week, we find another infection above tooth #10 from a screw being drilled into it (the other tooth that was attempted to save by root canal). So we are planning on extracting that one in early 2025. Today, I meet with multiple doctors/surgeons nearly weekly and across the country to try to find a plan to help the bone loss and find a permanent option for the missing teeth. Many doctors/surgeons nearly hold my hand as they say "I'm sorry you're going through this and will continue to." I've had surgeons say, "I wish you found us back in 2016." I was never warned I would deal with this almost the rest of my life. I paid Dr. Mueller out of pocket because "insurance says it's cosmetic." I've paid $100's of thousands on my mouth and have probably double that in costs ahead of me because of Dr. Mueller's work. If you've made it this far, get a second opinion away from Dr. Mueller. My surgery by him is my biggest life regret.

Time for yet another update…read more Brief background - I've been coming here on and off since 2014 for laser hair removal, mole removals, laser skin treatments, and facials. Dr. Lopes removed some moles for me a few years ago and my results were amazing. No scars and I had one on my chin that you would literally never know was there! It was expensive - something like $100 a mole and I had 9 removed - insurance will not pay for anything here bc it's all cosmetic. I've heard all good things about her and her skills in plastic surgery. I don't know that I'll ever go there, but, good to know she's here if I do want to. I had laser hair removal here years ago with Maggie and, bc of my sensitive skin and some scars on my legs, I had to do lower power on the laser and more treatments. I paid over $4000 for the treatments and Maggie modified it for me as needed to suit my skin. I appreciated this and never forgot it. I was initially given a quote good for 6 months when discussing the laser hair removal so I could leave and think on the investment. Now, when I went back to see Rachel last year - no quotes, just her assessment in the exam room quickly, and it felt like she was just making it up off the top of her head. I didn't think that was as professional as the process in the past. I want to be given an exam and a quote sheet I can take with me so we're all on the same page. I spent about $1000-1200 on some touch-ups and some vascular issues and had an issue with a "follow-up" that I was charged for when I was under the impression it was included in my price since I was being brought in to review the results. No quotes given either - you have to remember and hope she remembered what she said it would be. What? After Maggie retired they did bring in another esthetician for a while also but she's no longer there and my future appointments were cancelled. I believe they have not replaced her and no longer offer facials bc no one has ever called to reschedule and this was over 6 months ago. She was also shady about prices and there were no prices listed the first few times I went and she kept "offering" other things to do or recommended I "needed" but you had no idea what it would cost and some of those things were $90-150 each! If I had said yes to everything - I'd have easily spent $450. Shady. Rain, the office manager, is kind and worked with me to resolve the issue I had with the follow-up mentioned above. The front desk staff are sweet. I just don't appreciate when we're talking about this kind of money, feeling like the prices aren't set - they're made up on the spot. Something about that rubs me entirely the wrong way and makes me pause on coming here for anymore laser follow-up and treatments.

I've had the registration deck change the order of my tests, making me late and almost miss some of the prescheduled tests. So when one of my specialists scheduled an Echocardiogram at Beach General I tried to get her to switch to another hospital. Much to my dismay all other hospitals were booked beyond my appointment with the doctor. How surprised I was when I read the check in instructions (at the last minute of course) and saw that I was to enter via the hospital's main entrance. Upon arrival I asked at the desk where the heart check in was located. I walked, per instructions, down the hall just behind the desk & found that they had recently built a Heart Center across from the gift shop. It was an extremely short walk. Check-in & Registration were a breeze, staffed with friendly personnel. There was a small waiting room. That day spillover had to sit at the tables in the main entrance hall. The waiting room needs to be larger. But I'm not sure where it's located that is feasible. I had no idea how extensive their Heart Center was until I was called & followed an employee further down the hall to wait in the Cardiac Cath waiting area. I observed two Cardiac Cath doors in addition to the room where my Echo would be. I had to wait a long time in that seating area because of some sort of emergency. It was uncomfortable & tiring. But that type of thing isn't unexpected in a Heart Center. I kept seeing a doctor in scrubs going back & forth between a Cath Lab & the door I would eventually be taken through. When I was called I was surprised to see how large the testing area was. There were lots of technicians & a nursing station. I eventually learned that the area must completely wrap around from the waiting room to the area where I was tested and beyond. My driver that day relayed that during her waiting room stay doctors had come into that area & told family members that their loved one had done fine. I'm really not sure what that area contains in addition to Cath Labs & testing. In my testing room the technician was very thorough & professional. Upon exiting the room following the test I learned that she must have been in charge. Other personnel were asking her how to handle an unexpected patient. My results came through very quickly on MyChart. I've since learned from other testing that results are prioritized for some Sentara Cardiologists. Much to my dismay what I saw was that the results were significantly worse than the Echo the previous year. When I saw the doctor he eased my mind. Showing the pictures adjacency he told me that the pictures from this Echo were far superior to those a year ago & aligned with my last Cardiac Cath. Never would I hesitate to return to the Sentara Heart Center for testing. The technician who performed my Echo was obviously excellent. That said, should I ever require another Cardiac Cath I want the procedure to be done at the Sentara Heart Hospital.
