This is some of the worst "Italian" I've ever had in my life. Canned chicken in the store bought Alfredo sauce, the pizzas are tasteless, wet and dry at the same time. All the food we got was so mediocre that it makes me grateful there are better Italian places in Canton and beyond. The owner / manager(?) basically fought us on getting a refund for this awful food. Service I don't remember and the building I don't remember either because the food was that bad it overshadowed everything else. I think I've had my last Coccia House Pizza. And that's a shame because I grew up on the stuff. For years I told everyone it was the world's greatest pizza. It was the standard by which all other pizzas were measured. But this take-home-and-bake business model has ruined it for me. This has become one awful pizza. Pizzas are half baked and sitting in boxes in what used to be the dining room. They're cold and dried out. They're not baked to order. You just walk in and buy them literally off the shelf. They send you home with a dried out pizza and a stack of sliced provolone. The result is a tasteless, dry, stale mediocre pie that has barely a passing resemblance to the bold, flavorful, crunchy crust, chewy cheese pizza that made Coccia House famous. I really don't get it. Why take such a quality product and turn it into a lousy take-and-bake piece of cardboard? Coccia House is shooting itself in the foot with this new business model. Wonderful Italian Dinner. I had read (and called) to confirm that if we dine after 7 there wont be a crowd; there wasnt. We had a party of 5 and we were greeted immediately though had to wait a few minutes. We were not sure what to expect with the mixed reviews but we were all happy with the evening! Also, this is a CASH only establishment, so be prepared. Though Jeff was not a server, he was a very welcoming family member that continued to guide us thru the menu, provided sauces to try and answer questions. Our table was always pleasantly bussed by a young man (also) named Jeff.Our server was also friendly and helpful. The apps we ordered were the hot peppers and my husband was thrilled! He enjoyed not only the pepper but the finely ground sausage stuffing with a kick. We also ordered the cheese fries. Those were also really good. For entrees, we ordered : 2 pizzas - these take an hour to cook at minimum. Amazing provoline cheese covers the entire pizza. It was wonderful! Seafood feast pasta - the person that ordered this was disappointed.I think they were hoping it would have been in a creamy or marinara sauce of sorts vs a broth type over pasta. I think part of it was understanding the dish but most of the seafood was eaten and i ate the squid for him. Gnocchi special with peas over the alfredo sauce. It was wonderful! I had some people try the gnocchi that have never had it in our group and they also enjoyed it. It wax cooked just right and mixed with the sauce and peas with prosciutto was a pleasant surprise. Like one reviewer said, "This place is an icon." To go here is to love it. I remember coming when I was about 6. I could never remember the name of the place, but always remembered and referred to it as "The Chinese Pizza Place." Something about the place - either the slanted roof or the font on building's name - looked more like the outside of a divey Chinese restaurant than an Italian place. Still, I remembered that the food was good and always wanted to go back. My first job out of college was in NE Ohio, and when I called on a client in Wooster, I asked, "Do you happen to know the name of the Chinese Pizza Place?" He knew exactly what I was talking about, recommended one of his favorite pies, and - BAM! - I had my Saturday night meal planned. It was just as delicious as I had remembered. These are filling pizza pies, so make sure you have plenty of room ready for some serious pizza when you come. It took a while to get a table, but once I was seated I was served promptly. Pizza is made to order, so it can be a bit of a wait, but it's completely worth it. Take-home box is acceptable and even encouraged - although I'm sure some Wooster students have packed away a whole pie in one sitting at one point or another. Stopped in here on a visit to Wooster, disappointed in the limited options now. Can't even dine-in. Not what it was when I was a college student 25 years ago, it was amazing then, unfortunately seems to be another business that didn't survive the pandemic. We got a half-baked pizza to take home and enjoyed it, flavor was great but crust was hard and dry-even after baking according to the directions. I've eaten here twice. Maybe it's because I'm from the east coast, but I found the pizza here very unimpressive. I guess from a local perspective it's good, but I've had pizza all over the country, and Coccia is just sub-par. I've had worse, but I've also had better, and more often, the pizza is better other places. Second, we did a dine-in as a group. I was less than impressed with the service and the food. Since having their pizza before, I decided to get something else. It was underwhelming as well. I'm not sure what the hype is, but maybe it's just because they've been around so long. Fantastic, original pizza. Also, forget the negative reviews you see here. This place is an icon. My dad and his brother hung out here when they were in high school, and they're in their 60s now. I've been eating here since I was a kid, and it's still amazing, almost every time. They ship their pizza across the country to people who can't get back here to have one in person. And that "grumpy old man" mentioned by the other review is Joe and he's the kind of guy who comes around and gives you a wink and a pat on the shoulder, asking how your food is. People like Joe are one-of-a-kind. About the pizza. First, the crust on this pizza is amazing. Crispy and robust enough to match up to what's on top of it, which is their delicious, garlicky sauce, a mountain of toppings and cheese with oregano mixed in. To the other review who said there was too much sauce, well maybe for some, but you can ask for light sauce, too. The sausage is a course dry grind, and clumps together in spots of heaven. And they don't count pepperoni in this place as they do in the chains. They grab a handful and spread those babies out. The charcoal peppers are a key ingredient on any pizza here. They're the fire-roasted kind, and you can't get them at most other pizza places. Thank God for whoever first put them on a pizza because now, I don't get one without them. The other reviewer who said he likes his toppings on top, they'll put the pepperoni on top if you want. They'll cook your pizza to order. They'll give you thin crust. They'll "brick it" (set the pizza it on hot bricks to make the crust extra crispy). They will cook it well done. Whatever, don't be afraid to ask for it. If you're going for the first time, ask the server for some suggestions. If you can, you should go with people who know this place well. Yeah, they don't take credit cards, but they've been there for 50 years and don't need to because it's packed every weekend regardless. Just hit an ATM on your way. About the rest of the menu, I've never had a reason to order anything but the pizza here (which would be like ordering a turkey sandwich at a Jewish deli when the pastrami/corned beef are sitting right there, staring you in the face). I will get an occasional spinach salad (with warm chunks of pancetta, balsamic dressing, roasted red peppers, olives, zucchini and tomatoes). However, my friends do love their pasta dishes, so that's something. If you're expecting to get in and get out, you'll be disappointed. But you can always call ahead and order your pizzas for a certain time. They'll have them ready for you. Also, you can order them frozen or half-baked, if you want to cook one on your own at home. I've done this many times, and they come out, almost as good as in the restaurant. And to the California reviewer, who said Wooster has no good pizza to people who've had any "great" pizza on either coast or in Italy, well, that's cool. Whenever I see a review like that, I always check out the person's other reviews. Just read her other reviews of Wooster businesses. (Sorry. Natural reaction.) Look. Great things come to those who wait. Even BETTER things come to those who plan. There's the classic pyramid of service: Quick, Inexpensive, High Quality. Pick two. Well, the two you're getting here are High Quality and Inexpensive. (Yes, It's worth it, and therefore, inexpensive in my eyes.) Coccia is not your everyday pizza for when you just decide you could eat pizza right now. It's strategic night-out, special occasion pizza. You need to be deliberate about this. Order ahead. You can call and get a table with a pizza. Even better, you can schedule a day ahead to have your pizza picked up the next day. This is by far the best way to ensure that you don't sit at a table acting all hangry and post a hasty review on Yelp because you didn't plan ahead. Even if you don't want to wait for pizza, the pastas and main dishes here are also incredible. During long wait times, I've been known to order meatballs a la carte as an appetizer. Try it. They're amazing meatballs. The pizza is among the best in Ohio. I grew up minutes from Cleveland's Little Italy and still think Coccia House beats all of them. (No offense, Little Italy places. You're either going to love it or hate it. No in between. You're going to think it's amazing unique pizza or you will hate it. I happen to love it. You will also probably wait forever for it. Our experience was all around flawed at most every step. Upon reading reviews it was clear we would need to order well in advance for our takeout order. With out of town guests arriving at 8 I thought it would be safe to call at 6. Our call was answered by a very inexperienced worker who could not answer questions of even the most basic level. I understand everyone has to start and has a learning curve but there should be no learning curve for basic manners and a good attitude. When I ordered the pizza she said it would be 2 hours and 15 minutes until that would be ready. We had never ordered from or eaten here but we wanted to try. I asked if we ordered other food would it be timed to be fresh when we picked it up or would it be made now and sit until the pizza was ready in a couple hours? Her response was "HUH?".? I repeated myself and she said "Hold On!". I could hear her ask a version of my question and she came back on with "Sure". I asked a question about the type of fries used in the Italian fries as one of the reviews said they were not ordinary fries. She went right to her info source with "Now he's asking about the fries" in a very exasperated tone - answer "they are regular". I ordered them anyway. Next thing I know she blurts "Hold On" and I am on hold. A minute or so later she is back "Is that it?". I ordered cheese ravioli and wanted the meatballs that come with it and add on meat sauce. I tried to clarify that as so far she has instilled no confidence she knows what she is doing. I added a burger and asked what cheese options there were and she said "provolone" - I asked anything else? She audibly groans and asks her source and was told American, Cheddar, etc.? We politely asked for American and said that would be all. I asked her to please repeat back the order and I had to clarify meatballs and extra meat sauce and American cheese on the burger. I showed up at the designated time. The pizza was ready but clearly had been sitting there for a while. It took a few minutes to track down the rest. After a 6 minute drive home we opened up the food. Pizza had to go in oven to warm up. Italian fries were spiral sliced potatoes (not "regular" fries) topped with cheese and prosciutto - they were lukewarm not hot. The ravioli was warm but Surprise! - no meatballs. The meat sauce was very good, The Italian fries have major potential - good flavor lukewarm - likely great hot. Burger was only ok. Pizza - different - solid. Definitely NOT worth the wait and the rude, poorly trained phone service. read more
