ONLY IN INDIANA. I've heard about Hoosier Roots since they opened. It's about an hour from my house (thank all things holy!) and it's TOTALLY WORTH THE TRIP. (8 minutes outside Brownsburg) We kept it simple- 1 order of chicken (8 pieces, yep, 1 whole chicken) 1 small jalapeño mac & cheese, and because they had house made fried pickles, what the hell- add those, too. Walked out with 2 containers of left overs, all for the grand total of $37. Hoosier Roots ain't bougie. This is a jeans & t-shirt place. But, dang- the chicken is better than my grandma's out of the cast iron skillet. I would absolutely take my fancy friends from out of state to get a REAL taste of Indiana. One thing you should know about Cynthia is that she is obsessed with maintaining the integrity of the food she is serving. Sometimes that means that certain dishes may be served at room temperature to maintain the vibrancy and flavor. Our appetizers (crostini with goat cheese and brucetta and mini potatoes with Greek yogurt) were a huge hit, along with the tri tip beef, baked pasta and fresh veggies with homemade dipping sauces. Our menu consisted of their Pulled smoked pork, pulled smoked chicken, smoked mac-n-cheese, coleslaw, potato salad and they even custom created smoked stuffed portabella mushrooms for a few vegetarians. Many who attended (about 150 people) are still writing me to inquire about this company and saying hands down it is some of the best smoked meat they have ever had - without the sauce even ((years ago I learned from the most amazing man Cletus on the backside of a smokehouse bbq restaurant in Charleston, SC that the way to tell good bbq was to taste the meat without sauce - that is what sets your tastebuds exploding and you know what....Sir Cletus was RIGHT). The potato salad is an absolute must - I know I know....HOW is any potato salad different? Trust me on this - Jodi's recipe (which is guarded in a vault) is so unique, creamy and delicious you will crave it. The smoked mac-n-cheese - will send your tastebuds dancing. Coleslaw is so fresh it crunches as you take that first bite - soooooo cold and creamy. The stuffed portabella mushroom that Jodi said she just "invented" - well let me tell you I have begged her for the recipe as I crave that to this day (no luck - again recipe under the vault).
