I arrived at the Lafrenaie location inside the Roaster's which has its own entrance on Atwater Ave on my sister's birthday. Moreover, I was looking for a last minute cake. There were several options available but I needed assistance. All the while FaceTiming my mom and sending pictures of cakes to my brother in law, Roxanne waited and smiled patiently and even chipped in with recommendations. We finally came to an agreement and she offered to personalize the cake and asked me if I was going to eat it that evening or the next day because the strawberries would be frozen . She went in the back and replaced all the frozen berries on top pf the cake for fresh ones so that we could enjoy it the same day. She went above and beyond and exceeded my expectations. This whole experience was totally 5 STARS !!!!

It can be hit or miss, but when it hits? It hits. They also provide the food that you order up to your room, which is probably my favorite part. Hotels rarely offer the same great menu to your room and so I always know when I've had a long workday that I can just get the same great dinner and lounge in bed after and avoid people. They also are great at getting breakfast to your door early, which makes trips to Montreal so much easier, especially if you're going for work. They always have a great selection of drinks, full bar so they offer everything, and the bartenders has been the same for at least a couple years. They're really nice. They do a good job. Ask for the food, it is always good, and the part I love is that they're very good about allergies when you mention it to them. They offer gluten-free bread and they change out ingredients. I've never had a bad meal or snack. So even when sometimes the weight is too long I know I'll be back another day and I'll have something great.

Even during peak summer season the restaurant was crowded and even had a line starting to form at peak lunch hour. There are not very many large tables so don't expect a large group to be sitting together. The menu is pretty straightforward with the typical miso, tonkotsu, and shoyu broths. But they even have a tomato broth with Hokato scallops for those more adventurous. We ordered the Tonkotsu Black $19 & the Tonkotsu+ $19. Is it pricey for Ramen? Yes. But was it worth it? Yes. The Tonkotsu Black had a rich broth with prominent garlic oil. The Tonkotsu+ was really the show stopper. With 3 different styles of meat: Smoked pork pastrami, meatballs & chashu. The truffle oil was fragrant and earthy. But the biggest surprise was shiitake mushrooms. They were marinated/seasoned to perfection, with a hint of sweetness. I would've been happy with just a giant bowl of shiitake mushrooms, and truffle oil. The broth was much lighter and delicate than the Tonkotsu Black, yet strong on the truffle. If you're not really a fan of truffle, do not get this. We were tempted to go back again, but we opted to try other restaurants around the downtown area. 10/10 Would go back again! The staff are very friendly and quick. Give it a try! They have multiple locations, especially if you're looking for something new, yet comforting.

TL;DR/The Short Version: Korean grocery store in downtown…read moreMontreal. Relatively small but has good variety. The Long Version: H Mart has arrived in Montreal. I feel a little bummed because I prefer small independently owned businesses over big chain stores, but truth be told, other than the name, the store looks and feels like it did before when it was one of the two "Épicerie Coréenne & Japonaise" locations on Ste Catherine West. This one became an H Mart (known as H Marché in Quebec) the other one is now MTLKFOOD (which is also an Asian grocery store). I don't know the backstory, but the prices aren't very different from before and with the exception of more prepared foods in their refrigerated section and more prepackaged bakery items, they are selling the same products that they did before. I was really hoping that the advantage of a chain with purchasing power would mean lower prices, but I didn't really see that. It's still a fun place to poke around and look for Asian items like imported snacks, but if you've been to the store when it was called Épicerie Coréenne & Japonaise, not much has changed.
