This came with a heaping pile of vinegary red cabbage and kartoffelkloesse (soft potato dumpling, which I actually don't care for that much but these were okay). The fresh Pils on tap (Bitburger, of course) was clean and crisp, and the ambience was cozy and comfortable. I visited for dinner last week and was promptly seated upstairs. After looking at the menu, I ordered the Frittura Mista special for 26€. Shortly after ordering, a complimentary bread basket was brought to the table with my entree arriving about 15 minutes later. The plate had salad and country potatoes (steak fries) on it along with squid, salmon, cod and scampi all fried and with a small cup of rouille sauce for dipping. This was a good tasting meal of fried seafood and the fries and salad were good too however it did not stand out enough to me to rate it any higher than a 3 score. If I returned I would like to try something else on the menu.

The restaurant is in two parts, one a long series of train rail cars. We ate in the other, a building directly across the street. We came at an off hour, 3pm, so the rail cars were closed until dinner but the other served, only a limited menu of Spaghetti Bolanese and Croquet Monsiuer. Deciding the Spaghetti would suffice We had a delightful dinner. The portion was enormous, one plate could easily feed two hungry people... and it was well prepared and delicious. It seems like a well run establishment and the service was very good too.

A lot of Belgian breweries are surprisingly tiny operations, but that can't be said about the Chouffe. In 2006, the brewery was purchased by the much larger Duvel Moortgat, and it shows. This brewery and its surrounding area is really quite the enterprise by rural Belgian standards - there's the brewery itself, a tap room, another tap room that serves food, an adjacent full-service restaurant with a stocked trout pond behind it, and a gift shop. This all seems a bit "commercial" and United States/Disney-esque, especially after you've been traipsing around Belgium and rural France visiting decidedly non-commercial breweries that half the time were closed, much less have a freakin' gift shop. There's even a pond with a little island with a gnome-hut on it. It would have to try pretty hard to be more cutesy. Still, there's something to be said for this kind of corporatist professionalism, even if it does somewhat resemble visiting the Epcot Center, if it had a "Belgium" pavilion. You don't have to worry about it being open, which was a constant problem in visiting other breweries throughout the region. There will always be a wide, complete range of its beers available, both for on-site consumption and to take home. And of course, plenty of merch and swag featuring that lovable gnome! A Chouffe tulip glass is a must - and there's even Chouffe coffee and cream liqueurs available, of which we purchased a couple small samplers. Of course, there's also the beer. Even after the Chouffe's purchase by a larger brewery, the flagship La Chouffe strong blonde ale hasn't suffered all that much - it's still one of the better examples of the popular "Belgian Strong Pale Ale" style. I think it's got more going on than either Duvel and Delirium....more fruity, spicy, yeasty, while at the same time being a little cleaner than a La Fin Du Monde. I'd still rank it as my favorite easily-accessible example of the style.

There were multiple tables that came in after me and folks were served directly. I am 6'11" or 210 cm tall. Wonderful Service I stayed here while doing some training…read moreat Spangdahlem Air Base. The reservation was maintained by the company who hired me, and the Biehl's were very kind and helpful. I inquired ahead of time about bringing my 20-lb dog and was told it would be no problem. I had to lock him up in his crate if I wanted the room cleaned, otherwise he was able to be free in my room (he's totally house trained). The restaurant served very delicious food and the dining room was waited on by Mr. Biehl himself. The beds are comfy, the shower is a nice size, the kitchen is readily equipped, the balconies have a nice view of the hills and the train station, and the location is nice and quiet. I would definitely stay here again! Thank you, Biehl's! UPDATE: I recently stayed again and had to share more information. As with last time, the Biehl's allowed me to bring my dog with me. However, this time I had to leave the hotel much earlier in the day (5:40 am) and my dog ended up barking way too much and disturbing other guests (I was terribly embarrassed). The Biehl's were incredibly kind in offering to help me problem-solve the situation, as I was about ready to simply drive the 1.5 hours one way to take the dog back home. The hotel has a small, separate building that has been unused this season, and they offered to let my dog stay in there while I'm away during the day - it was safe for the dog, calm and quiet for the other guests, and a HUGE relief for me! I cannot express my gratitude adequately enough! I would recommend this hotel to absolutely anyone, as I have had only positive experiences here. Many thanks to Dirk and Nicole!!!
