Our friends came in from Chicago and we wanted to find a great Mexican restaurant that had authentic food. Elkhart has lots of Mexican restaurants! We started at one but our friends were looking for sopa or Caldo or consume they didn't have any. So we hunted online to see if we could find one with both great reviews and consume and we found Coco's. It's small and unassuming when you pull up We walked in and were immediately greeted and seated. Little did we know that the owner was busing tables and just finished cleaning our table before we walked in. We were greeted with a smile and started to place our orders when the owner walked over next to the waitress and greeted us as well. He could tell it was our first time there. He proceeded to recommend specific items and describe the ingredients that were specially made by his wife who is a chef. I knew we were in for a treat because one of our friends is from the same town in Mexico that the owner is from. How to say the food was amazing! The tortillas were so thin and light. The meat was so tender and excellently seasoned. We had chicken, steak, and shrimp quesadillas and tacos. Our friends had lamb consume and tacos. Everything was superb. The owner came back a number of times to share a bit more of the story behind the food, his wife and the town he grew up in. It was wonderful to experience the pride he had in his business and the joy it gave him to serve us. We highly recommend this restaurant!! read more

If there weren't cars in the parking lot, it would look abandoned. You can walk all the way around the building and be unsure of which door to enter by, since none are marked in any way. But! Once you get inside, you are hit with a fantastic blend of smells, from cooking meat and Mexican spices to warm corn tortillas and grilling shrimp. It's well worth looking past the plain exterior and equally plain interior to savor the authentic flavors that come out of the kitchen. Once you order, every dish brought out to another table makes you say "oooh, I should have ordered that!" because it all looks and smells amazing. I was more than happy with my burrito and my taco de camarones, and my husband ate his taco el pastor and his sopas so fast we didn't even get a picture! Don't let the hot sauce colors fool you: the green is much hotter than the red. I recommend putting a little bit of each on the edge of your plate and tasting them before committing to covering your meal in them. I'm a big fan of the extra spicy, but I feel obligated to give fair warning! The servers are friendly enough, but not overly attentive. Don't expect to see them after they deliver your food unless you flag one of them down. However, DO expect to see the owner pop out of the kitchen and ask how everything was. They don't bring checks around, you go pay at the counter when you're finished, but take your time and enjoy your food! I never felt like they were in a hurry to see us go. This will definitely be on our list of places to go when we're craving south-of-the-border flavors in the middle of Indiana. read more

Once again Yelp did not disappoint. I ordered chicken tacos and they were some of the best I've ever had. The salsa roja was the perfect balance of heat and flavor with a great consistency. My husband ordered the chorizo tostada along with steak tacos and said they were great, too. This place is kind of a hole in the wall, not really aesthetically pleasing, and quite honestly looks a little dirty (we had to use napkins to wipe food and salsas off a table to be able to sit down) but the food is amazing and our waitress was very friendly. If you want tasty authentic Mexican without having to cook it yourself, this is a must try. read more

This could be one of those places you might think of driving by and not stopping; but, think again. Don't let the exterior fool you. While it's also not fancy inside, the food far exceeds the shortcomings of the lack of accoutrements. I had the Tostada de Camaron which had plenty of good-sized shrimp and topped with avocado slices. My husband had the Enchiladas Verdes that came with 3 chicken enchiladas and a side of thin-cut steak. We also shared an order of guacamole. Oh, and the salsa was fresh and sooo good and we both loved the chips too! We'll be back for sure. read more

This restaurant is very unorganized. They hire inept staff. Be prepared to wait a long time for food. On one occasion I called in 20 minutes away from the restaurant. When I got there they told me they weren't ready. I waited for 20 minutes after I arrived. That's 40 minutes into placing my order, then I questioned them when was it going to be ready it shouldn't take 1 hour for 3 tacos. The hole time my tacos were right next to the cashier getting cold. Worst experience ever. We went in, and they told us to sit at a table that still had other people's food and plates on it. Nobody ever came to take our order until i had to ask a girl to wipe down our table and then she realized we had never been helped. She took our order, i asked for a bottle of water and 3 horchatas. After 10 minutes we finally started to get our drinks but for some reason she brings me a coke when i didn't even ask for that. She finally brought me my water. My mom asked for a salad which on the menu it says it was $2.99. They bring out a salad that had chicken on it, avocado, lettuce and tomato. Cool. My mom went to pay the bill and it was a lot more than what she was expecting. Once we got to the car we had realized my mom was charged the coke (that none of us drank) and then we also saw a charge for "tostada de agua chile" i had no idea what that was since none of us has any type of tostada. I go inside to tell them that we had been charged a coke nobody asked for and told them that nobody had any tostada. Well the kid behind the counter began to explain to me the "tostada" was the salad that my mom ate. I told him my mom asked for the salad that was on the menu for $2.99, and he began to tell me that the salad on the menu is a really small side, and i said okay i don't care that's what my mom had asked for? And I'm assuming the order came out to see what the problem was, i told him the "salad" my mom had was incorrect because she asked for the salad on the menu. Mind you, the salad on them menu had absolutely 0 description about what is in the salad, and he begins to tell me in Spanish "how are you going to think a salad with chicken and avocado is going to cost $2.99" and i told him "me and my mom don't work here we have no idea what a salad was considered for them" and the owner literally tried to make it seem like it was my moms fault she ate what she was given. It was the worst experience from beginning to end!!! They only returned me my $7. They didn't even return the coke! So who knows who even drank that coke that was opened. I've gone to cocos before and the service always sucked but the food was good, i don't care how good the food is anymore the service today was so rude and horrible i am never going back. They need to hire people who actually know what they're doing. read more

Cocos has some of the best tasting Mexican food in elkhart. But its really busy most of the time and the wait staff is... distracted to say the least. The place itself is really small and the parking lot is horrible. But the food is kinda worth the minor discomfort. It's really good. read more
