My mother and I decided to go to the Cody Rodeo. It really wasn't that much fun. It starts out with the announcer talking about how great the USA is and all the freedoms that we have then switches to talking about God...this is where it went south. He said, "When I talk about God, I mean Jesus Christ my lord and savior." Apparently, this guy flunked Civics because when talking about our freedoms he must have forgotten the First Amendment..Freedom of Religion. The clown was introduced and the first joke he told was terrible...the punch line was that the President of the United States has shit for brains. Another joke, he made a joke about the announcer having a fat girlfriend and then displayed leopard printed underwear that were huge and said she could be found in seats 5, 6, and 7. Really? We left shortly after that because it was so unnecessary. BTW...they also talked about either the horse or girl having one eye...totally rude. This act needs to get with the times and provide better showmanship. I could have just stayed home and watched Yellowstone with Jimmy riding the bull, which would have been a better use of my time. read more

It was all terrific fun until the injuries started. One horse had to be removed from the field by a tractor-pulled sled. A bull broke both back legs and ended up pulling himself off the field -- a horror to watch. And finally a rider could not detach from a bull, was flung around and didn't get up when he finally landed in the dirt. He was bundled up on a stretcher and removed. Early on the announcer said an ambulance was on its way, but it took 15-20 minutes to arrive. No idea about his condition this morning after the show. This was the first time I've gone to a rodeo. It was probably a one time thing anyway, but I would certainly never go to this amateur event again. read more

You can't miss the Rodeo if you're in Cody! There was plenty of parking, and since we had already purchased our tickets from The Cody Cattle Company, we strolled right on in! We went and found seats right away. I can't speak for the concessions because we had just finished dinner, but the environment was exciting, and our kids were paying attention to the festivities 100% of the time. The rodeo clown was funny and provided some good comic relief between events. There was an event for all kids twelve years old and under, where they could go out into the arena and try and pull a red handkerchief off of one of two calves. Too cute! There was one bull called 'Grave Digger' who we'll never forget. He was trying to jump out of the chute, and I don't think the rider even made it out of the chute on him. He then proceeded to charge every clown and obstacle in the area! It was very entertaining and very patriotic. I would highly recommend going to the Nite Rodeo in Cody while you're there. read more

I attended the Cody rodeo and I was shocked at how uncomfortable I felt with their lack of inclusivity. This is an event that is a major tourist attraction for the town yet as a person of the Jewish faith, I felt that my presence was not welcome. I would NEVER bring my children here as I would be devastated to explain that the rodeo doesn't welcome those of other faiths. It is this kind if divisiveness and lack of understanding of other cultures that continues the us/them mentality of our nation. I went to the rodeo with an open heart. If you are in Wyo, go to the Jackson Hole rodeo - a better rodeo on all accounts and they welcome all - all colors, creeds and cultures. read more

The Cody Nite Rodeo runs every single night throughout the summer. Pros: - The barrel racing and female calf-roping were amazing. - The skill level of little kids is hard to believe. - A big can of beer -- served unopened -- was $4. We stayed in Cody on a recent trip to Yellowstone, and decided to go to the rodeo one night. We had a great time!! It was entertaining and family friendly. The announcer and the rodeo clown kept things lively while they were setting up for the different events. There was a nice mix of adult competitors, and junior competitors. Be sure to ask for the military discount if you are currently in the military, or a veteran. My husband is a veteran, and they offered a nice military discount (with proper military ID). It was nice to see that they appreciate our veterans. Will definitely go again when we are in Cody! read more

Absolute must see if you're in town or near Yellowstone! A fun way to spend an evening, lots of entertainment, cheap drinks and food (hot dogs, pretzels, popcorn). This feels like a favorite of locals as there were several people dressed in the nights "color" and using seasons passes. The rodeo itself was entertaining but I was disgusted when I saw that there wasn't a single place to put recyclable items. Over half of the "trash" was recyclable! The trash cans were overflowing with cans, plastic cups, plastic bottles, etc. With nightly rodeos, I can only imagine the environmental impact. This rodeo seems to have really gone down hill. A few years ago my daughter and I went and it was great. During a recent family vacation my wife, son, daughter and I all went. It was on a Friday night in August. The skill of the competitors was pretty horrible. Only one cowboy made it 8 seconds on the bronco's, and not one cowboy lasted over about 1 second on the bulls. The bulls were typically just barely out of the shoot when they threw their rider. With the bronco's, there were several times the horse refused to leave the chute when the gate was open. It was somewhat comical. The barrel racing was probably the highlight the night we went, even though we saw more barrels knocked over than we ever had before. They said it would run 92 days total this year. Maybe it's somewhat dependent on what other rodeo's may be drawing competitors away at various times, but we weren't impressed at all. We will probably try it again when in the area as it has the potential to be great family fun. read more

20 bucks per adult, 10 bucks per child, and free for 6 and under to see a myriad of cowboys and cowgirls competing in bull riding, horse riding, roping, etc. Heck yeah! Count me in. Go in there, cheer your booty off, laugh, cry, whatever. It is what you make of it. I personally cheered until I lost my voice, then I had to just quietly root for my cowboys and girls. There are multiple locations you can purchase your tickets, so check with your hotel and see if you can just buy it there. However, there really wasn't a line there either if you want to just wait and purchase the ticket at the door. Doors open at 7, shows start promptly at 8PM. It lasted about 2 hours. Food and drinks are sold, but you can also bring in your own, which is what we did. The rodeo is available during June, July and August. Oh, and regarding seating, if I recall correctly, buzzard roost is the section near the host and grandstand is behind where the cowboys and girls prepare and are released. I personally prefer grandstand because it's closer to the action and away from the sun. read more

This rodeo was the first one I've ever seen. I liked the chemistry between the announcer and the rodeo clown as it made the show funny and kept the pace well. While we were there a rider and horse were injured and the announcer made a point to say that both animals and riders are medically well cared for. It was a lot of fun and definitely felt like a traditional aspect of visiting Cody. It was a pretty chilly evening in early June when we visited and the wind cut right through us. Luckily they sell blankets and sweatshirts below the stands and while it was on the expensive side of things, I ended up buying a thick, purple Cody Rodeo blanket which is a nice souvenir. They had a couple of ladies walking around selling popcorn, hot cocoa, and various other concessions and their concession stand has all the necessary candy and soda you would expect. I know I wouldn't get food here for dinner (there are plenty other places to eat filling dinners in Cody) but their hot cocoa warmed us up. The show itself lasted about 2 hours and it was a really entertaining evening. I definitely think that those who enjoy such events should check it out. Also, if you go and can't seem to get enough, they allow you to buy tickets for the following night at half price, which is a pretty sweet deal! read more

The Cody rodeo is a tourist's rodeo, but they put on a great show. My wife and I visited over 12 years ago and it was a bare bones operation. They had the usual set of Bull Riding, Barrel racing, Calf roping, Steer riding and bucking bronco riding. As far as the events go, they still offer much of the same thing. One interesting "improvement" is the banter that goes on between their main Rodeo Clown and the Rodeo Announcer. They've added some comedy relief to the show and it does help. The rodeo runs every night from June to late August. It starts about 8pm and ends at 10pm. It is basically a tourist rodeo based on the crowd's response to the question, "who is on vacation"? Tour buses do a lot to fill out the stands too. One thing I really like about the rodeo is how the stadium is designed. You have to walk around and over the animal stalls to get to your seat (i.e. the Buzzard's Roost"). This gives you a chance to get an up close view of all the animals. The stands sit atop the bull riding pens, so you can hear and feel them kick and snort right under your feet!! The Cody rodeo is a really neat place and well worth your time to experience. read more

I've been to hundreds of rodeos and competed in some when I was a much younger man. I enjoy the sport of rodeo, especially the timed events. For over 100 years rodeo has been the only sport in America that links itself with a history lesson, in which you get to see the skills ranchers and cowboys used during the Old West, many of which are still used today. It's a great living lesson for tourists who want to see Americana alive and well. In the past 30 years, rodeo has been transformed by corporate sponsorship. Rodeos used to pay out paltry sums to winners, and now they routinely pay in the thousands and tens of thousands of dollars. So, you'd expect rodeos to be big productions, right? Not the Cody Rodeo. Not really. It's billed as this gigantic capital of rodeo the world over. It's a 90 plus year tradition and one of the only rodeos in the world that goes for an entire month (July) every summer. This, of course, if you don't take into consideration Barretos, in Brazil, a pro rodeo that lasts longer and seats 100,000 each night. The Cody Rodeo is marketed as the biggest, most extravagant rodeo in the American West. In fact it's akin to any of the large county fair rodeos all over the USA each summer. The stands are place facing north and south, and they're covered. This is fine when the events are at night, as most are, but the July 4th rodeo is during the day and the stands don't completely block out the sun. Picture barbecued tourists... The rodeo is the typical so-so county fair fare, with bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, barrel racing and bull riding. It's a fast show, with little pageantry. Slam bam! Fast and over! It had none of the spectacle of Cheyenne, Denver or Calgary. We spent good money to see the July 4th Cody Rodeo, which was marketed as the best rodeo event for Independence Day in the USA. It was not even close. Don't blame the cowboys, many of whom were world champions competing that day. They had an off day like you occasionally see in rodeo. Virtually no cowboy rode a bronc or bull or roped a steer or calf. It was just like watching a minor rodeo in rural Oklahoma, where you pay money and expect no one will score. Don't blame the people in the stands. They were hollering their heads off cheering on the hapless cowboys and cowgirls. Blame the rodeo announcer, who spent zero time explaining the events to the audience -- many of whom had never seen a rodeo. He was a supreme butt kisser, fawning all over the champions who were competing, but not taking one moment to explain their events. The worst moment of the rodeo was when this announcer, who was not from Cody, riled the crowd with the opening ceremonies with a Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem, and then a prayer to Jesus which was offered as a challenge to the no good liberals who are destroying America with their homosexuality and opposition to prayer in school. He posited that in the urban America of today "the American flag isn't welcome anymore" and finally, he gave a full-throated endorsement of President Trump (not named but by clear implication) to "pack the Supreme Court with justices who will put GOD FIRST!" Get this: The announcer, supposedly one of the best in the business, made a point of being dismissive of all other religions because "I'm gonna pray to MY lord and savior, Jesus Christ!" (Sadly, much of this evoked thunderous, indeed ravenous applause.) The only problem with this is I didn't pay good money for an alt-right sermon. Neither did the tourists from France, Germany, India, Japan, and other countries I couldn't identify. There were sitting in this audience expecting to be entertained by their first rodeo. Instead, they paid good money to listen to an alt-right rally for Jesus and Trump. Rodeo has been on an arc toward right wing evangelism for about 20 years. Cowboys ride a horse or bull and when they land on the ground in one piece, these protestant cowboys kneel and cross themselves like penitent Catholics. It's gotten ridiculous. Rodeo used to be broncs, bulls, cowboys, "buckle bunnies" (rodeo groupies) and beer. Now it's alt-right evangelism and you're paying for it. Also, the rodeo did nothing to pay respects to the American Indians who once controlled all of Wyoming. Cody is less than an hour from a gigantic Shoshone Indian Reservation and not one moment was spent honoring their heritage. Cody is a nice tourist town with very friendly people. Their July 4th rodeo didn't reflect that. It was just an unwanted trip to Trumpland. read more

Solid 4 stars. Entertaining and fun. The various events were interesting and we all enjoyed the 'go around'. The bull riding is at the end, so be sure to stay until the end. We arrived at 8:30 (show starts at 8) and we did not feel we missed much. Upon entering the stadium, there is no need to sit on the opposite side. A long walk with no real viewing benefit. As for concessions, there is popcorn, drinks, hot dogs and bbq sandwiches. All reasonably priced. And it's rain or shine. And fun night for the family. read more

I have never been to a rodeo so wanted to give this a try. While I enjoyed the overall experience, I have mixed feelings about it. I did not expect this, but there were multiple events. I guess I just expected horse bucking and bull riding, but there were more events than this. This is a plus. In between events there was this clown. A lot of his jokes were painfully bad and made the rodeo feel long at parts. I don't know if this is a rodeo standard. The events were fun to watch and while I in no way can do any of these events (or even ride a horse for that matter), there weren't too many riders that were really good. Felt like a lot of these guys were in training. The best part of the night by far was this thing they did with kids from the audience. They had kids come down and basically had to play capture the flag with calves. It was HILARIOUS. This was when the rodeo clown was at his best because he provided commentary for the chase. While I enjoyed the rodeo, my wife felt underwhelmed. She did love this part though. read more

This place has always been the diamond in the rough when it comes to rodeos!!! You have your roping team roping, barrel racing, bareback riding, bull riding to name a few! The clown always makes it extremely entertaining for the entire family!!! What was downright special for us is the opening ceremony to remind us how much we appreciate GOD and COUNTRY!!! This has been lost so easily in our American tradition that it was beautiful to witness once again! Thank you for the ongoing tradition of having the children remove the ribbon from the calf's tail!!! This ritual has never and will never grow old!!! Family friendly, we took our grand daughters, 7 and 8 and they loved it for different reasons. Both loved the rodeo clown and they were rooting for all of the riders in all events. We chose to stay in Cody Wyoming for the specific reason of seeing the rodeo. We highly recommend getting the buzzards view seats although they did not check tickets and anyone with a grandstand ticket could've walked right over to the buzzards view section the night we went. It was about an hour and 40 min. It started right at 8 and we got there at 7:50 after eating diner at the silver Dollar (best burger!) it was a good show. Yep there is a prayer. Thank God we love in a free country where everyone can express their religious freedoms safely. Reading some older reviews about mis-treatment of animals I noticed that the bull with the nose-ring was not tied up by the nose ring. But was being used for photo ops. He was in a very restrictive pen. We enjoyed the barrel racing and bull-riding as well as the bucking horses. The calve roping was a little hard to watch considering the calf was roped around the neck, jerked in the opposite direction tackled and tied up. I felt a little squeamish at the treatment of the calf like this "for sport". In addition seeing the bulls and horses get cinched to get them to buck was not a good feeling as they immediately reacted. The announcer was entertaining and moved things along while getting the crowd involved a few times. The clown was OK. Lots of potty humor and his skits went a little long. The riders most all seemed like "amateurs" except for the top 4. Which was fine. It was nice to see a mix of young men and women athletes, as well as adults and couples too. I'd like to see the ladies pick some of the music that they want to ride to. Some songs seemed to be a little demeaning. All in all I'm glad my daughter and I went! read more

I've never been to a rodeo before, but this was fun! It was nonstop excitement for 2.5-3 hrs! The rodeo clowns were fun, the riders were good, this was definitely good entertainment! The concessions were reasonably priced too. I love that instead of hiring riders, it's a competition. So, you know you're always seeing their best performance! I sat right above the animal cages and watched the horses struggle. The show was well put together, but way too inhuman for me. My breaking point was when calves were being lassoed around their feet and dragged around until they bled. I had to leave when one poor baby got knocked up so bad it started bleeding to the point I thought it may not make it out of this show alive. On nights when I hadn't just pulled a 15+ hr shift and was looking for a little "trouble" (in a good way), I would come here. Honestly this is great family fun too. If you have experienced big flashy rodeos this might not be super impressive to you. However, the Cody Rodeo does offer quite a bit of entertainment crammed in to a small touristy type town. I certainly wouldn't travel to Cody just to see this specific rodeo, but if you happen to be driving through say on a cross county adventure, then it's worth a stop. In the summer there have a rodeo every night. Fair food and beer available for purchase. And I will say that they do have a nice mix of events and it's entertaining.
