A very underwhelming experience. This was a highly rated coffee place near Portobello Road Market. I went there with my family members and we ordered two single shot espressos and one latte. The service was quick but lacklustre. The espresso drinks were not strong and tasted like they had been watered down. The latte was okay. Not very memorable but okay. However, what threw me off the most was the dirty saucer that was given to me along with the cup. There were old bits of coffee grounds on the saucer which stuck to my cup. It was kind of nasty and distracted me from enjoying the coffee. The baristas also seemed bored and distracted. One of them was sitting on the floor after he was done making my drink and he was just itching his hair. I was hoping he washed his hands before making my drink but I wouldn't count on it. My brother asked about their coffee deal, half off for a bag of coffee. They told him it was an old deal since COVID and they hadn't taken it off the board behind them. An independent coffee shop on Portobello Road. Quite nice with a warehouse chic to it. The coffee is okay, a bit too bitter for my taste but you can order different coffee selections if you like. You can also buy coffe in pre-mixed bags or mix your own favourite varieties. Definitely a recommendation for coffee aficionados! read more

"What's in your smoothies, yogurt?" "Nope." "Milk?" "Nope." "Icecream?" "Nope. Just fruit." Hmm... okay. I'd been wanting a smoothie badly and this place seemed like the answer. They had smoothies! And apparently damn pure smoothies being yogurtless and all. Pure smoothies - I bet they practice hot yoga and believe in Karma and abstinence. I looked at the options: banana- strawberry-blueberry or banana- strawberry-blueberry or banana- strawberry-blueberry. "I guess I'll have the banana- strawberry-blueberry," I said. The smoothie was a success from my taste buds' perspective, refreshing as a hop in a cold lake on a summer evening so muggy that your shirt sticks like fly paper to your back. The store also sold great looking coffee (I tried to pick the coffee up for a date... "You're looking fine today. Coffee, perhaps?" I asked, but it promptly said no.), tea and chocolate themed items along with paninis and pastries. I would call the atmosphere funky. (Let me take you to funkytoooown). It had interesting writing and posters and a good, indie feel. And finally, to comment on the workers. They did not complain of the black lung like Zoolander, but seemed quite industrious, and more important were enjoyable to talk to. read more

It is really good to know that you can get a decent coffee on Portobello Rd. It is such a beautiful area, and it would not be complete without a buzzing little café like this one. They do the milk well, and the coffee is really tasty. I also really like the fact that they roast their own coffee, it shows that they have a genuine passion. They supply other stores with their organic, fairtrade beans as well. It is often quite busy, especially on a Saturday morning. I really think it is worth the wait though. I suggest getting a take away coffee and strolling around the markets. read more

Having found myself in a need of some good study spot I followed Googles suggestions which landed me eventually in Coffee Plant. Convenient location within walking distance and next to Fabrique Bakery definitely helped, too. After good bread breakfast I needed just good coffee, a decent table and time. Coffee Plant provided all of the above topped with nice, relaxed vibe. I have not tried any of the snacks yet but the white coffee I had felt rather good. How strange, I decided to write my original review in German - probably because my fellow country men and women have always had a soft spot for good coffee. Worth repeating here in English, this is by far the best coffee shop on Portobello Road. Period. Coffee Plant consistently delivers and wins hands down against the growing competition from chains moving into Portobello Road. I can remember the original market stall where coffee was roasted in the street, the roastery then moved indoors and has since moved off-site. I miss the smell of freshly roasted beans, but luckily they haven't stopped selling a large selection of blends. A favourite with locals and caffeine addicted tourists alike, queues sometimes reach the door but staff here know what they are doing and you never have to wait for too long. No annoying personalisation of cups or ridiculous sizing here. Better still, all coffee sold here is both organic and fairtrade - as all coffee should be. There's plenty of seating in the back of the store, but the three tables outside are the best - nothing better than seeing the world go by while sipping a coffee. After schlepping around Notting Hill for an afternoon, I came here to recharge (needed both caffeine and wifi...and to actually charge my phone). The latte was expertly made and very delicious. The coffee bean selection was plentiful and reasonably priced. They will also grind beans for you and there are some signs to help guide you with how to make your coffee at home (I took a photo of it). There is ample space to sit down with your computer and get some work done or just sit back, relax and enjoy your freshly brewed cup of caffeine. If I lived in London, I'd probably come here again. Seems like it had a loyal following of locals. read more

This was a coffee beanery and press more like Starbucks but just had a different vibe it's nice to get away from Starbucks but there are a lot of different coffee beans that you could take it they will grind it up for you you could sit there is chairs and everything like that the service is super friendly if you're into coffee houses in London especially the Notting Hill area definitely check it out if you haven't I had a cappuccino to go and while I was there I had a little cup of espresso to get me going but I wanted the cappuccino to have on hand on my walk back to my flat read more

Just when I was starting to get a bit homesick for the crunchy organic granolafication that is Portland, Oregon, I was whisked into this storefront and was instantly buzzing with delight. Prior to this visit, I'd essentially written off the storefronts directly on Portobello Road, assuming that anyone with enough £££ to pay that obscene rent must certainly be a chain in disguise... that the "good stuff" was hidden in back alleys with the Rolex man. Not Coffee Plant: they've been Independently blending and packing their own teas, importing green and ethical coffee beans and roasting them onsite since the '70s, rocking Portobello long before Mr. Grant and Mrs Roberts. And doing so with foam. Stop in and smell the success of a small business that stands alone in awesomness. (Grab a cuppa while you're at it, the barrista art along is worth the £3 you'll pay.) read more

Why is it that rich people are skinny? The girls are all like foals with bandy legs and long manes. You find a selection of these ponies queuing up for a morning coffee in this place. I have to say it is dam good coffee, but served with a slice of posh hippy. You'll find sugar, coco and tea hand packed for sale along the walls along with badly behaved children and skinny women with long hair and leathered skin chatting. "Yarr yarr, bunnie and chichi are off to Zimbabwe, oh yes darrrrling it's such good charity work." Who am I to judge? Place like this, I should like. As I said, their coffee was good and fairly priced but it's the people here that don't make me want to hang around. The search for a good coffee in London can be daunting and never is such a thing more imperative than when faced with a day at a seemingly boundless market like Portobello. A place where caffeine is practically compulsory. It's a good thing then that the revered Coffee Plant is located on Portobello Road just a moment from the market itself, a hub of caffeine loving goodness where both the owners and staff are truly serious about serving good quality coffee in a chilled environment minus the 'yah' connotations of many of the surrounding cafes. Indeed, it sometimes feels foolish to brave this part of London without your Sloane Ranger Guide. It's posh in a bohemian kind of way but posh all the same. The Coffee Plant, therefore, provides some respite from Notting Hill's sometimes pretentiousness, being quite simply and unfussily a damn fine place to have a beautifully made coffee. read more

I am not a coffee connoisseur, but I can tell you I really liked the flat white I got from Coffee Plant. It's one of the better ones I've tried in London. (Not the greatest, but definitely good.) In general, the coffees are decently priced, and they also have a range of pastries organic teas that seems interesting. The barristas were nice, but there were some decorations on the wall that were rather odd for a coffee place with mature, homey barristas. (ex. "9-11 was an inside job" t-shirts) Overall, I would definitely drop by again for coffee, but not so much if I wanted a place to study or read. Study spot requirements: Plentiful seating: Plentiful, sort of, comfortable, absolutely not. There were a few cute tables at the entrance, but all of the seating in the back half was awkward and uncomfortable patio-like furniture. And the bathroom is there, with the door opening to quite a few tables. Not a lovely atmosphere, especially with the cleaning supplies and tools piled up in the corner. Locally owned: Yes, and they roast their own beans and have interesting information about the roasting process and a cool setup in store which makes it seem extra special Relaxed atmosphere: Decently relaxed because the staff didn't seem to circulate or judge or hover, but not relaxed because the seating is too weird. Also, the walls are covered in conspiracy theories (and not in an interesting, quirky way, more of a 'lets educate our customers' way) so the decor is... interesting. Quality coffee: Definitely quality Snacks: They have some substantial items and pastries, and also a wall full of snacky sweets and treats for purchase Price: Totally appropriate and reasonable If this place felt less like a hospital break room, I'd spend a considerable amount of time and money here. I wasnt expecting much when I went in here because I dont usually find good coffee when Im out . I really needed a caffeine fix. To be honest the beans dont interest me, where they are from or whether they are organic etc and obviously a good thing but its their job not mine. Cappaccino was a little milky but then when I got to the coffee it was dark brown and tasted like coffee, it was hot and I enjoyed it . Very cheap too. The guy blowing his nose behind the counter was off putting it didnt sound healthy and it is a place of food. I was finished otherwise I would have to have said something to someone. I wouldn't be so inclined to get my coffee here, if it (1.) weren't so conveniently located to my flat, and (2.) the espresso wasn't so damn good. Self-admittedly, I am one of the yupsters, who annoyingly frequents this place on weekdays (when the wafe-moms jam up the queue with their prams--hey, I'm not the only annoying demographic who hits this place up!); and weekends, when it becomes overrun by glazed-over tourists, who have lost all sense of social decency, while ramming around Portobello Road looking for overpriced souvenirs. The staff is super cool, properly pierced and inked, and, even crazier, very patient with the mobs of people. The sizes are a bit confusing, and are only displayed AFTER you've given your order to the barista: small is a standard; medium is a large; large is extra-large. Learn it; remember it, or face the ire of the skinny, hungover bitch behind you. If you're in the area, give it a go. It's some of the best coffee in the city. read more

Ordered a decently priced flat white and it was delicious. Not bitter, not as strong as i like them but tasty. Limited seating but not sure how busy it gets in there during the day. And open early too. I was there a little after 7:45. Came to another nearby establishment on a pre work errand and "yelped" for coffee in the vicinity afterwards. Sorry, but I'm not impressed. The place is cute enough in that Bohemian Portobello Road way, but a bit chaotic and disheveled for my taste. The Wifi is free, but the coffee wasn't great and the employees were brusque. I was a little suspicious when I saw the glistening beans in the hopper of the Mazzer, but the flat whites were priced right at £2.20 for a double shot, so we gave them a shot. Not terrible, but far from my favorite, with a distinct bitter note displacing the richness I was hoping for. There's also a huge variety of coffee beans available behind a second counter and along the back wall, from all sorts of places. Normally this would excite me, but even their "medium" roasts looked pretty dark to me, which makes it hard to taste the real flavor of the beans. All of this would add up to about 3 stars for me, but I'm deducting one more for the 9/11 truther BS posted prominently on the wall. Grow up. read more

Came in to find a place to study with coffee and I was impressed! Great place for natural lighting and fair trade teas and coffees. Staff were pleasant and attentive and made me a great flat white! Their croissant was soft and moist. The seating area in the back had ideal over head sunlight and art. Pets are welcome and maybe even get a special treat. It's relentlessly.... ok. Ordered a cappuccino, which came with decently foamed milk, and a competently pulled double shot. It was tasty, but not impressive. It seems more than a bit overhyped on other sites (or the competition in London really is very bad): if this is truly "one of the top five coffees in London", I would strongly urge London's coffee-loving citizenry to move to Edinburgh as soon as possible. The wifi is free, and fast, which is a plus, and the music selection is another plus-- interesting and unexpected. It's a nice place to hang out, as long as you don't go during the Saturday morning Portobello Road rush. They sell pastries (looked good), whole and ground beans (smelled good), and oddly, some 9-11 conspiracy theory book. read more

Recommended to me as one of the better coffee places along Portabello Road, The Tea & Coffee Plant has plenty of character and style that make it the ideal place to stop and have a tea or a coffee. I tried one of their coffees (they even tried to make a flat white), and it was okay but not the best. The espresso was well made but I still think that they put too much milk into it for my liking. The cup size probably doesn't help them since I think even the smallest size is the normal size as Monmouth's. I think they declared all things organic and/or fairtrade so most people should be happy about that. If you're in the area, it's a better alternative than all those in the area. read more

Overrated coffee. I've given this place 3 chances and all 3 times the beans were clearly over-roasted and the coffee tasted burnt. Don't know what all the fuss is about. This is only a teeny bit better than the Starbucks, Costas and other chains. read more

Good atmosphere, although a little bare bone interiors. It is an interesting contrast to Galis a bit up the street. Mixed ambience the furniture is crap and doesn't entice you to sit down, but the place is cool. Good music, loud enough to listen to. Posters and stickers stuck all over the place. The coffee is decent, but the machines are all automatic as perhaps they have to be for such a place which does such massive turnover. The queues here are often out the door. The milk is frothed in giant jugs which means unless its blended, its difficult to get the ideal texture. My flat white was obviously over-extracted and the barista tried to do some latte art on my flat white, shaking the jug over the top of the cup, but there was nothing left there except for brown. We both looked at it, sharing the fail moment. So why good? Partly, because the beans for sale are decent and well priced. Not enough information on the farms and location, but theres a good choice and selection and you can buy small quantities. The place has the X-factor as well, probably helped by the gathering of a number of bohemes, perched at the windows, looking out at a very cool part of London. Its better than 3 stars, but not in the level of the champs, like st ali, lantana, tapped and packed, kaffeine, electric espresso etc. read more

Rude staff - good coffee but whats with the attitude? They refused to serve me as i was on the phone. I wasn't yelling down the line, i even asked my mum (in oz) to wait, so that i put the phone down as i ordered, but when i went to pay, thinking it was my coffee, the bloke yelled at me about not serving people on the phone. I don't get it - I wasn't rude, I stopped talking on the phone (and even lowered it), said thankyou / please at all the right times and he was just RUDE! It's good coffee, but who wants to be treated like that? read more

The prices really are a little steep but that's not a real issue for me since the coffee and food is really delicious and fresh. I also liked that they've thought of the non-smokers like myself. Wow that profile photo is old! They left that shop and moved up a few doors several tears ago... Anyway, generally great coffee. Many of the best baristas went back to aus and nz but it remains good. Often packed and the staff must be deaf because they always have the music so loud it's hard to have any kind of conversation. Given that the place is such a goldmine, it's a shame that the owner, Ian, doesn't spend a bit of money making it more comfortable inside.
