I guess an alleyway is the perfect place for a shop like this, and if you have been to Amsterdam you probably know what type of shop it actually is. Mind you, it isn't as if they happen to be hidden away - they don't - but it is still cool to visit one down an alley. I found this place to be rather nice, and the staff were also quite friendly, and rather pleasant as well. Oh, and they also have some nice seating here for you as well, which I like because it means that you can simply sit down here and relax.

We walked by this place while strolling along the Amsterdam canals on a Saturday afternoon in March, and I remembered the name from a Yelp search I did on coffeeshops, so we popped in to take a look. There are two levels, and the upstairs was filled with guys lounging around, and it was totally filled with smoke. So smokey that it was kind of hard to see, so I immediately went back downstairs. We didn't buy anything, but I took a look at the menu card they had on the side, just to see what they had on offer. Oo... they have edibles here! Both brownies and muffins. But the brownies were made with hash, and the muffins were made with weed. Someone once told me that hash is bad, and weed is superior, but I've never tried hash before, so I dunno. I went up to the counter to see if I could sneak a peek at the edibles, and I only saw small, plain-looking muffins wrapped in cellophane. They didn't look as appetizing as the chocolate marble cake from De Dampkring, but I dunno, because I didn't try any.

    brownies and muffins... Warning. Lol.

When in Amsterdam, go to the original coffeeshop: Abraxas. First, I'm not going to lie. We were clearly tourists walking into a herbal cafe. This is a novelty and feels quite sinful coming from the uptight USA. But my hubby and I were re-living our college youth on one of those lovely couple trips we take annually. So we were living in a legal and acceptable manner outside of the states. Basically, we dived into the local flavor, guilt free. We highly recommend it. (To those who may know us, Don't Judge Us Too Harshly. YOLO.) We ordered the muffins and brownies. We only wanted to try edibles. Muffins were a bit dry and overpowering in flavor. BUT the brownies were seriously AMAZING. We had 1 each (5 EU each). Taste, texture, and total sensory explosion was amazing. Flavor wise, I could have eaten a dozen, it was so rich, moist and delicious. I highly recommend it. If we ever are in Amsterdam again, we will definitely go back.

A tiny little place. Close to everything. Lady behind the counter was very helpful. Very low key.

Most of the establishments looked pretty quiet and dead except for Smokey and the club next door. Since we weren't in the mood for clubbing, we decided to go to Smokey. The moment we walked in, I noticed that it totally lived up to its namesake and was totally... smokey. Too smokey. It almost seemed like there was a fire going on inside. The place was pretty packed and busy, but we managed to snag a little bar table by the door. It was next to the vending machine for ciggies and under a large clock, so I could keep tabs on exactly what time it was. :) I sat on a high bar stool by the wall, while my bf sat with his back towards the room. It wasn't the best position for him to be in, as people kept bumping into him as they were walking by. He got a beer, and I ordered a mint tea because I didn't feel like drinking any more alcohol. I loved how the mint tea came with tons of fresh mint leaves. Totally awesome. They also gave me a Pickwick English tea bag with it, which I didn't bother to put in, as I didn't want any caffeine so late at night. We left after only one drink, as we were tired and the place was too smokey to hang out for long.

Don't get the wrong idea, y'allz. I was an OBSERVER, not a participant…read more I've actually put off writing alot of my Amsterdam reviews b/c I don't want my "good girl" image to be tarnished (Hi Mom!). Let's just say I observed certain recreational activities in Amsterdam that I think the world should know about. Amsterdam is brand spankin' new to Yelp, after all. So they need all the reviews they can get. Smokey's is smack in the middle of Rembrandt Square, which is a haven for tourists. The inside resembles an above ground neon-lit cave. Pool tables in the back. Music videos playing on the flat screens. Every time I hear Kid Cudi's "Memories", I think of this place. Everyone stopped what they were doing to sing along :) Tables are communal. Most patrons are college-aged. They have a zig zag vending machine and they sell pre-rolled or bagged product. According to my traveling companion, their merchandise was much more pricey than at neighboring coffee shops (like Rokerij, which is awesome), but since Smokey's is a better hangout spot in a more central location - you pay a bit more. The quality is mediocre, though. I enjoyed a 4 euro pineapple strawberry smoothie at the bar. They don't serve alcohol here though, only smoothies, which I found to be quite common in the coffee shops of Amsterdam. The folks behind the counter were pretty nice folks, too. Overall, I would recommend Smokey's for the younger crowd.
