First visit: I left a 5 star review. Second visit: I am leaving a 1 star review. After my first visit, I filled the prescription Dr Cohen gave me, however he was going on vacation... so I called and spoke to the woman who answers the phone, and asked if he had someone covering for him. She said no, he would check in every 3 days or so... then told me "if worse comes to worse, and something happens, just go to the emergency room". That was enough to set me back to not take the medication until he returned and was available. I have reactions to medications no one else ever has. I am that one in a million they have to include on the paperwork. It sucks, but I am. I had my second appointment Tuesday with him, at 7 am. And so did 4 other people. ALL at 7am. How does that happen. One doctor, 4 appointments at 7am. Anyway, I told him I hadnt started taking the medication due to being afraid, and the comments his office admin made. He apologized for the comments, then told me he cant help me if Im not going to take the medication. He said I could have called his cell phone. Did he give me his cell phone number? No. Turns out its on his machine, which I will get to, but every time I had previously called, the woman answered - so I was not aware of that. Against my better judgement, I started taking the medication Wednesday morning. I had side effects that day, that got worse Thursday, and even worse Friday. I called and left a message on the office voicemail at 3pm on Friday. At this point, I had the cell phone number, for emergencies. I called the advice nurse for my doctors office to see if they could help me. All I wanted to know, was after three days of this medication, could I just stop taking it. I figure after three days Im not going to have withdrawal symptoms but I would have liked someone to confirm that. They were useless, as always and to get them off the phone, I said I would just go to the urgent care. Called Dr Cohens "emergency" cell phone number at 4:30 on Friday and left a voicemail there as well. It is now almost 10:30am on Saturday and I have not received a single call back. I decided to stop the medication, and if something happens I will go the the ER and let them help me. I will not return to Dr Cohen. It is clear he doesnt care about his patients, and I guess I should have listened to the other reviews. Also, I was never told what I owed on my first visit, so I didnt pay. I called, and the woman told me they usually bill, but its not monthly - its whenever... which is ridiculous. I believe I owed $40 per visit so I paid $80 on my second visit. Dr Cohen said he had no idea, and if it was wrong I would get a bill at some point. This is no way to run anything... and this is my very first experience with this type of doctor and I will not have another one... here, or anywhere. I am so extremely frustrated and all I wanted was one minute of his time to confirm I can stop taking this medication - as its usually one you have to be weaned off... after three days and I cant even get one minute of anyones time. Lets hope I dont suffer anymore by just stopping on my own.... this was exactly what I feared when starting the medication. read more

This guy misdiagnosed my child with depression, and put him on meds he didn't need. Refused to let me attend sessions through telehealth when my son and his dad were there in person . I finally got tired of this, and had my kid tested and he does have ADHD, like me. Not depression, but ADHD. And this guy totally missed it. read more

He is very rude to the young kids. He should never talk down to kids that are struggling. He needs to be there and to help them and be understanding.. He has no heart! He is a straight asshole. If I could give Dr. Cohen negative stars I would. I've seen him for almost two years, and every time I leave his office I'm baffled about why I've been too lazy to change doctors and seek better care. I went to him because it was convenient, as convenient as seeing a doctor EVERY SINGLE MONTH can be. He's close to my home, and for the most part he's punctual and appointments don't last long. When I say they don't last long, I'm not kidding. You will be in and out with your prescription in 3 minutes tops. Not great if you have actual psychiatric concerns. He won't talk to you, so don't bother trying. If you are struggling, you'll need to handle that on your own, with a psychotherapist. It's strange though that he's prescribing meds every month and really has no idea how they are affecting his patients. Sorry, but the whole thing feels like an insurance scam. Also, he's arrogant and rude at times. He also doesn't collect copays at time of service, he bills you 6 months later with a fat invoice. I started paying it down with him monthly, and this time when he collected my hundred dollar payment he told me that the reason my account wasn't updated with the previous months payment is because my card was declined. Really? That's odd, I went home and checked my bank statement and sure enough the money charged to his office the previous month went through just fine. It's like he thinks because I'm a psych patient, I'm bad with money. News flash Dr Cohen, I have a 770 credit score, and I'm well aware where my money goes. I only blame myself, I should have been out of this relationship after the first meeting or two. Anyways, I have a new doctor now, and I can already breathe more easily knowing I'm in good hands with a doctor that actually cares, and isn't trying to scam me or my insurance company. read more

Dr. Cohen runs a 'pay for scrip' scam. He requires that patients go in monthly to get a refill. The appointments are 3 minutes max, he waits until three patients are piled up in his waiting room before starting to see them. The waiting room is TINY and it's awkward ... everyone sitting around trying not to look at each other while we can see him surfing the web through a crack in the door or hear him shredding papers. Any attempt by the pharmacy to refill meds automatically are discarded. During the pandemic, patients are required to call the front desk person, she tells them to call the pharmacy (which, again, has already attempted an auto-refill), then responds to the pharmacy request. She then bills both insurance and the patient for the refill request as a visit with the doctor, costing the patient a bunch of money and resulting in lapses in medication. Again, I can't stress enough, there is no conversation with the doc in these calls, no discussion about how the meds are working out, no check ins to see how the patient is faring, no difference in the conversations whether the meds are controlled substances or not. Any attempt to discuss this issue with the doc results in his favorite response; "you can always find another doctor". read more

My son saw Dr. Cohen for over a year. Not only did not seek my sons input--he sent him to the play room and just talked to to me, but he hardly took any consideration of my input. When you sit down for your 5 minute (supposed to be a full 15 minutes I believe) appointment, he already has prescription pad in hand. Not long after, he's opening the back door for you to leave. I told him my son had stomach problems and he disregarded our concerns. At the age of 12, my son ended up needing to be treated for 5 ulcers, which were likely from either the meds or not being treated properly for anxiety. I am not opposed to medicine but you need to be educated on your child's medical needs and side effects. Cohen also ignored my concerns about my son's stunted growth (side effect of a med he was on). Rather than change meds, he continued the course. My son ended up needing hormone growth shots. :( Be wary of him unless you're just seeking a prescription without proper oversight. I felt he just cared about getting as many people as possible through in a day. read more

Dr. Cohen was unprofessional and did not want to hear about why I was there to see him. He took out his prescription pad and asked me if i'd like to be prescribed something. I tried to talk to him about why i was there, but he quickly cut me off and said that if i wanted to speak with somebody about my issues, that I should be speaking with a psychologist. He's only there to prescribe medications. I was in and out of there in less than 5 mins. If you're looking for a Dr. to write up a prescription w/o questions, this guy is for you. If you're looking for real help from a real psychiatrist, look elsewhere. read more

Dr. Cohen is a great psychiatrist and doctor. He saved my life twice. He is one of the best child psychiatrist's on the West Coast. True he can be abrupt and a little distant but as the last reviewer said that is just his way. He probably needs to hire an office manager, so just hang in their during the administrative and paperwork. Psychiatry has changed and is more medication management now, trust Dr. Cohen's diagnosis's and you will get better! He does care about his patients, you just need to trust him. read more

This Dr. Cohen had a bad reputation from the professional that referred me to him through my insurance company. She said "he seems to be a bitter, kind of a mean Doctor, but he'll prescribe the medication you need" WTH really! And now reading the other review doesn't surprise me. I had and appt. on a Monday, but never once got a courtesy reminder, called on Tuesday because I completely forgot I had that appt. (not to mention having 2 elementary grade boys and many other errands on my agenda that I was juggling that day) not that I have to explain that, I forgot! I'm human! So back to when I called to reschedule the Dr. himself answered and he pretty much told me that yes I missed my appt. and I can't reschedule. Ok.. So I asked why and he said "your just going to have to call your insurance and tell them to refer you to a different Doctor" NEVER once did the Rep or the "receptionist" mentioned that there was a policy that if I missed my appt. I would NEVER be able to reschedule! Sadly he's the only Psych that accepts my Heath plan in my area south oc.. Why still?!? I don't know, but from the sound of his rude tone, my interpretation was; I have an HMO plan, I'm not a cash patient nor do I have a PPO plan to pay him "Phat Money" he thinks he deserve that, that's why I'm no welcome to come see him, when I never have! Not that I would want to now! This Dr. Cohen is clearly in the wrong field of profession!! I'm a mental patient, that's a wife and mother of two and in the healthcare profession in South Orange County so yeah I rely on my meds and have been without for a while! I had read the Yelp review and spoken to my insurance company regarding my concerns of seeing this "doctor" before I went . I went and I left his office feeling horrible. He told me within 10 minutes of seeing me I was a control freak, type A , didn't need the medicine I was on (which I take On and off and sparingly) I explained my life as Best I could in 10 minutes , my situation and stressors , and he said I'm going to put you on Lexipro.. I told him , I am not depressed , nor do I show any signs of that.. he didn't care wouldn't listen . Wrote me a script for my current med and wanted to see me in two weeks . He wrote it for 1/2 the normal and 1/2 the dose.. I don't need to see him every two weeks . My old doctor I saw every three months , and usually never even ran out of my meds .. it was a weird experience . I felt like he was pushing a drug on me , maybe he promotes with drug company ??? Cuz I clearly do not need it . And he made me feel bad for knowing what works with me , even though I was upfront honest and I'm responsible about my anxiety disorder .. If I could give less stars I would! This is the worst psychiatrist! Spends less than 3 minutes with you and will only give one prescription monthly BUT ONLY AFTER YOU SEE HIM ON A MONTHLY ROTATING BASIS! Go ahead and see. Most Doctors, if it's an ongoing issue like anxiety, will write you refills so you don't have to keep coming in and running up your co-pay bill and they don't bilk your insurance. Not this guy! No psychiatrist NEEDS to see you every single month! That's unheard of for anxiety. You might have to see a psychiatrist several times a year to get meds right for depression or something, but when your issue is established for anxiety long before him and he wants 12 VISITS PER YEAR, it's a scam!! Once a month is 12 visits. No one see's a Psychiatrist 12 times in a year! I've never even heard of that! The time and money it takes to schedule these appointments but then...to him, no visit to bilk insurance for himself means he won't give you the refill you desperately need which has the worst withdrawal effects one could ever have to go off anti- anxiety meds cold turkey! This Doctor does not care about your health and only wants a pay check. If he says anything during a session I would be shocked. He is impossible to get a hold of on the phone. You can never get an appointment time that fits your schedule. You walk in he already has his prescription pad in hand he says hello writes a scrip then sends you out the back door. His scrips for a moderate strength anxiety medicine will only have 30 pills with no refills so you must go in and see him once a month literally to just pick up a paper because he does not phone in to your pharmacy you must take in a scrip pad. If you are truly looking for help go elsewhere. If you don't want to talk to your therapist and only want medicine then good luck with this guy but I am now driving two cities over just because I can not stand this man. I have not met Dr. Cohen, but he has seen my son. His recommendation of treatment has shown some improvement for my son, and for or that I am thankful. The reason I give only two stars is because Dr. Cohen seems cold, short, and indifferent when I talk to him over the phone. I would expect to see a little more compassion and understanding, but that has not happened. I saw Dr. Cohen for the first time last week. i was a bit wary because of all the negative reviews, so I was surprised when I had a good experience. He listened to all the facts and made a determination based on what he thought was best for me. He may seem a bit distant but that is just his personality. Dr. Cohen is one of the worst psychiatrists I have ever been to. I only went to him for convenience sake. He told me that I was required to come in once a month, which is unheard of, if the individual is stable and doing well. I have been going to psychiatrists for at least 12 years, and he is the only doctor who told me that I HAD to come in once a month. All other psychiatrists will make an appointment every 3 or 4 months. After almost a year of putting up with his rudeness and inflexibility, I told him I would be finding a new psychiatrist and his response was, "I don't care, there's the door." This guy does not want to help anyone, he only seems to care about how many appointments he can cram into one day and how many prescriptions he can write. Every ten minutes he has patients coming and going. His office is like one of those revolving doors. He is one of the only psychiatrists in South Orange County to accept MediCal insurance. But, do yourself a favor and drive a few extra minutes to a different doctor or Nurse Practitioner. read more
