Our family has been going off and on to this store, ever since it opened at the Livingston Mall, many years ago. Recently, I had a chance to take my elderly mother to their newly renovated, modern store in Florham Park ( as the Livingston Mall location has closed). She need new glasses and a recent eye exam to renew her driver"s license. We first tried the big box store at Coscto, and I immediately walked out due to the rude service and poor selection. Meanwhile at Cohen's, we had exellent service (especially the eye exam according to my mother), and got the exam, the NY state eye exam paperwork, and the frames and lenses ordered, ALL IN ABOUT AN HOUR. And, WE WERE WALK-INS TO THE STORE THAT DAY. At Costco, it was at least a two week wait just for the eye exam and the optometrist working, would not fill out the NY state paperwork for the driver's license! As far as the cost was concerned, it was about the same as Costco. Maybe we spent a few Dollars more, but I did not perceive any difference ( and yes, I am a frugal, penny-pinching bastard!). So if your time and sanity are important, I would recommend you try this optical store for your eye glass needs. By the way, they also do custom cutting of lenses for specialty frames which I use for reading. No other optical store that I know of, does this in NJ especially for walk-ins. I cannot explain the lack of professionalism that the employees display. The Doctors are always helpful and kind but the front desk....... They need to be fired! The gentleman in front got upset with me and confronted me invading my space (it seemed that he wanted to fight me), I really felt disrespected and embarrassed by his actions. They truly need to hire new front desk people. They're disgustingly rude and not helpful at all.

***NOTE - See the update at the bottom of my review regarding the "follow up" (or lack thereof) from the corporate office. I've been coming here for a couple of years, even though there were some issues in the past (which were resolved), and I made an appointment for an eye exam. I made the appointment online as their website suggests, and I thought I was all set. I got a call from their office saying that the hours on the website were not accurate and the doctor would not be in until several hours later. I then made an appointment for 3:00PM (instead of the 11:00AM appointment I really wanted). I got there shortly before my appointment, and was asked to sign a form. Then, one of the women behind the counter came around and sat down next to me to explain some of the "extra charges". OK - the first was an upgrade to the normal exam using special equipment - for an additional $35. I actually considered it, but then waited to hear the rest of the "extra charges". The next was for a dilation, for $25 additional, which wouldn't be needed if I went with the $35 upgrade. The final "extra charge" was for a glaucoma screening. Wait. What? Wasn't there a glaucoma screening included in the regular eye exam - with that "puff of air" part of the exam? One of the women, when I asked about that, said "not really". What? I have been told for years (actually decades) that the puff of air was the test for glaucoma. So she kind of waved her hands as if to indicate "eh - not really". So have I not been screened for glaucoma the last couple of times I was there for an eye exam????? This bait and switch, and then outright telling me I had to pay more to get a proper exam, was way over the top. I simply told them to cancel my appointment and I walked out of there. I wouldn't trust them to give me (or anyone) a decent eye exam. My eyes are important to me - I'll go to a reputable place where they perform the normal screenings without trying to get you to pay twice as much as the original exam price for what was supposed to have been included to begin with. **UPDATE** - The day after I posted this review, I was asked to contact someone at the corporate office, so I sent an email with my contact information. This was their response: "Thank you so much for following up with me. I am located in the Cohens Fashion Optical Corporate Office. I will be reaching out to the location to discuss your expeirence further and to retrieve further information about the details that we provided to you. After speaking with the location I will immediately follow up with you with an update on this matter." So much for following up - after a week and a half I have yet to hear back from this person. My review should now address the lack of response from their corporate office. So much for that. ** Update one month later - still no follow-up from the corporate office. Customer service is an anathema at this location. I showed up for an appointment that was confirmed online and was surprised to learn that the store had booked another person for my time slot. May I be seen after the double-booked person? There was still an hour before closing, with no other appointments on the books. Sorry, I was told, Dr. Circone, the resident optometrist, doesn't care that we're inconveniencing you due to our error. He'd like to go home early. Perhaps you may like to visit us tomorrow? Needless to say, I've gone elsewhere for my exam and will not go to this location again. If you value your time, neither should you. read more

Not happy. It took me three trips, each on days they told me my glasses would be ready, to finally get my glasses. The glasses were, FINALLY, as promised, but they didn't seem the least bit apologetic and the woman even acted surly as if I was ruining her day by complaining that they had messed me over. I've used Cohen before with good results. Maybe this is a bad store, or maybe a bad crew, but they will not see me there again. read more

Very disappointed in the service during my last visit. Made an appointment 1 week in advance with the optometrist. Day of, a fill-in is there who does not introduce herself. No apologies were made. Furthermore, I did not receive a prescription. The very rude representative told me it would be sent and it never was. I came 5 days later to pick it up and the rx was not ready. I had to wait 20 minutes for the real optometrist to sign it. In short, a very straightforward visit caused much frustration that could have been avoided with a few smiles and preparedness on their part. read more

I got my eye glasses for the first time at Cohen's optical in Livingston mall, NJ. After going back and forth several time my Rx was changed new glasses were given. Still can't see far as l used to do with old glasses . Doctor is very polite and helpful but it didn't work. read more

Would post zero if I could! Completely unprofessional. I scheduled an appointment online that morning at 9am for 11am. Drove 30 minutes to get there, got within 5 minutes of arriving, received a voicemail that my appointment was cancelled and that I'm welcomed to come as a walk-in. Parked, walked in around 11:02am and the young woman at the front desk told me that they left me a message that the appointment was cancelled, since I drove 30 minutes, I was willing to wait if needed to be seen because my eyes were bothering me but when I asked her approximately how long would I have to wait, her response was the 11am appointment is here, you could wait to see if the 11:30am comes in.... I repeated myself again and her response was the same, I'm welcome to wait to see if the 11:30 comes in and that I SHOULD'NT SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT ONLINE, ITS BETTER TO CALL. Take your business somewhere else, to someone that doesn't overbook appointments and cares more about their patient needs rather than filling appointment slots, your just a number here. If online scheduling isn't honored, it shouldn't be offered as a scheduling option. read more

Based on my experience I would not recommend this outlet . The staff gets 2 out of 5 stars except for a young lady I think her name is Kay . She was very helpful , return my calls as promised etc and was overall very tentative . My wife and I went in the same time , same insurance , everything the same . she got her glasses about 5 weeks later. Every time I go in ,or call its a different story like COVID , the lab etc. Got the glasses about 4 month after which was missing something they had to remake it . Another few months went by . Its hard to reach them by phone . I went in to the store .One time the Doctor asked me if I was sure I came in there for the initial exam ? since the Tech couldn't find my info in the system (even though I was given the fit wrong glass until the right one comes back (Kay to the rescue) .They wanted my insurance to pay for a new exam and glasses .Of course that did not fly with me nor my insurance Its now about 6 months later. After some back and forth another speedy exam was done .I got the new glasses which is crap anyway . The glasses from home Depot work much better than Cohen's. My wife's glasses is also garbage . I would not recommend this store by all means. read more

horrible experience dealing with catalina i have noticed the girls in the front are normally rude but this went beyond. i have never bought contacts anywhere else since i moved here but i won't spend another dime in this office. PLEASE employ staff who treat the patients with respect and don't behave as though they are in high school. I scheduled an appointment on line and received an email confirmation. I traveled to the Livingston location only to discover that the doctor was not in. I could wait or reschedule. I said I would wait if she was on her way. The salesperson was to call me when she arrived. In the meantime I walked around the mall. After 45 minutes I returned to hear another sales person say, "the eye doctor's hours begin at 4:30." So the original salesperson knew very well that it was going to be a one hour wait. Very good service here. Came in with a prescription from my own eye doctor and in about a week they had my progressives (trifocals) ready. Josie who helped me pick out frames was very knowledgeable about their stock and different options, like transitions, different frame types and types of glass used in frame. My only complaint was that I would like to have seen a wider selection of frames to choose from. I would not hesitate to come back here. read more

I have thick lenses and the nose piece from my glasses broke off. It was a weekend and the place I have been going to for years was closed. In desperation, I went to Cohen's. Saturday afternoon at the mall, already a bad idea. What a pleasant surprise, the opticians were busy but within minutes, 2 people asked if they could help. They not only fixed my glasses, not purchased there, in under 20 minutes but they refused money. Hopefully their superior customer service will be recognized. I was wearing my old glasses because I was not happy with the new $700 pair my old place made. You made a new customer-and saved me a long drive. Kudos to you! read more

Review for Cohen's Livingston Mall, NJ I give a 3* because the store was clean, variety of frames, staff was friendly, however what I am very disgusted with were the selling practices. I suppose the 1st guy was one of the doc and he was professional and friendly, proceeded to call someone from the back to help me look. The other gentleman (very nice as well) specified he is just doing the lenses and doesn't know much about the front but he will show me the frames I want to try on. So far so good. Meanwhile the sale girl shows up and she takes over. She was nice, had a good eye for the right frame fit however what I am disappointed about is being quoted on things I do not even need but just to make it look like I am given a discount ... I proceed and get quoted on the most expensive lenses (progressive). All good so far , as I thought 'oh okay' what do I know this is probably what I need. I shown my script, was quoted on progressive lenses which is $366+ (and most expensive) plus frame and other stuff. Again no issue there. I said I will pass at this time as I am still shopping around. I call my eye doctor which happens to be my friend too and he picks up on me mentioning 'progressive lenses' at which he responds 'why were you quoted on progressive lenses? I did not write that on the script you need basic lenses..." I am just disappointed and felt fooled, at someone I entrust as they know what they are doing and yet, the truth is I felt cheated and lied. Horrible selling practices... read more

I'm surprised that this place has so many bad reviews. My time there was nothing short of amazing. The doctor was so pleasant and delightful, and I had the pleasure to work with Kay and Nathan who were great at helping me pick the right frames and right lens choice. Before I scheduled my appointment there, I read the reviews. I'm one who doesn't really go by reviews because I myself do work in customer service and at times it's really hard to please people no matter how much effort you put forth, and they will never report the good experiences that they've had, just the bad. I had to check them out for myself and they were great! Interesting story: I saw the reviews but still went to this location because Lenscrafters does not take my new insurance (I was there before, and was not so happy with the service anyway)...To my surprise, I was seen by a wonderful female doctor who re-fitted me with new contacts that I absolutely love! I did not have to wait to be seen at all ! The doctor's manor was very pleasant and professional. When I asked for extra trials because I was going away on vacation, she smiled and said "no problem". The salesgirl in the store was very pleasant too and tried to offer me glasses but were not pushy, and I will most likely come back later... Overall, I had a very good experience! I scheduled an appointment on line and was called later,by a very hard to understand man who was not very nice, to tell me that they were over booked for that time and needed to reschedule. I did and when I came in for my exam, I waited over an hour to even go back with the extreamly rude "dr". I did not even think she was the dr, since she was in the back room talking russan to someone for most of the time I was waiting. This was the worst exam I ever had, I went up stairs to Lenscrafters and they did another exam, minutes after and got a completly diffrent perscription. Ive been wearing that one for weeks now and it is great. The young girls that were there were very nice, the young dominic girl and they young african american girl. Honestly if I could give a 0/5 stars I would. My reason for going in was for an eye exam in order to get new contacts. Upon arrival, I (the PATIENT) was apparently at fault for not bringing my old contacts (which no one told me prior to arriving at my appointment). The doctor continues to give me attitude for the remainder of my visit. I return a week later with the old contact box, no contacts inside, (thinking I am doing the right thing since they are different than the ones he fit me for) and he gets pissed off again because apparently this is now causing him more work. Yes I agree, I most likely did everything wrong but the doctor did not take a second to explain to me (once again the PATIENT) on exactly what I needed to do. I also signed the waiver to receive both the "Dilated Retinal Exam" and the "Screening Visual Field" but was unable to receive the Screening Visual Field because the doctor messed up and gave me the Dilated Retinal Exam first (apparently you cannot get the Screening Visual field after the dilation because of the blurred vision it causes). I was not charged for the screening visual field but it is just the point that I was not given the proper service. That was just icing on the cake but my real reason for this terrible review is for the highly unprofessional attitudes that the employees show their customers. I am going to get my eye exam redone at a doctor that respects their patients. PS. My mother is a nurse at a doctors office, she was with me the day of the exam and said that if anyone in her office showed their patients that level of service and disrespect, they would be fired. Another PS. while I was in the store waiting, I saw many other unhappy customers due to slow service or rude employees. I will never return to this store/office. read more

I've been going to cohens from the time I started wearing glasses, which is now 15 years. My girl is Josie she is professional, knows what I like and pulls then before I even get there! Her taste is impeccable and I send all my friend and co-workers to her! She the best at advertising the product she changes her frames all the time, and their always hot! Place sold me defective glass frame. I did not use it for a year, because I had other sun glasses. When opened the case, found one glass felled off, screw holding glass broke off. Owner accused me to put wrong screw and refused to replace frame. I will take business elsewhere. ( and my wife too) read more

After purchasing a very expensive prescription glass with one year warranty at this location, the frame broke. I went back and waited two weeks for a replacement, needless to tell you that the replacement came in but unfortunately was a wrong color. The re-order was made and after three weeks of waiting, I was told that the company no longer manufacture that design anymore. I spoke to the manager of the store who could not careless about my concern. The salesperson Josie Jaguar who shared my concern and my love for that design, took it upon herself and worked very hard in locating the same glasses in another location. Her dedication and hard work is the reason for the five star. She is a great salesperson and her hard work in assisting me is the only reason that I will be loyal to Cohen's Fashion Optical (Livinston location) and once she leaves this location, my loyalty is gone. I have been a loyal and satisfied customer of Lenscrafter's until I met this salesperson. read more
