I stopped in this store a few times and the lady working was the sweetest human! The shop has so many cute things. There were loads of practical kitchen items, which I think looked amazing. I almost bought a ton of them. But they also have lots of unique food and snacks, plenty of candles, clothes, and more. Everything felt very fairly priced. I ended up with a candle and a mug. What a lovely store! The Mommy and I wandered in, seeking Christmas presents and possibly some warm clothing. There's a very eclectic selection of all kinds of things...from bar fixings to clothing. These carefully curated items are generally high-end and mostly not inexpensive, but the product range is wide. Upstairs is a small collection of men and women's clothing, mostly outerwear. We did make some purchases, but alas I have forgotten what we bought. The cashier was smiling and friendly. This store smells wonderful. There's a very nice, if small, collection of soaps and candles. Also cold sodas in some very interesting flavors. read more

Persons of color: be warned-- if you'd like a pleasant shopping experience shopping in Cold Spring, you'd be better served at any number of other stores in the area. This is my second time visiting this store in one year, and although I hesitated to write this review and wondered if my experience was unique, after reading several reviews and finding others experiencing the same thing, I thought I'd throw my two cents in. The store should be commended for its thoughtful sourcing and displaying of excellent products, many of which highlight local makers. The service, however, leaves much to be desired. I walked in this past Sunday on a very busy Sunday morning and took my time looking through the products both in the front and back of the store, and (as was the case the first time I visited)-- noticed that the owner/manager seemed to very enthusiastically welcome all non-minority individuals with a "good morning, welcome, how are you doing today, etc etc."-- but failed to do that for any minority-presenting customers, black, brown, or others, for over 20 minutes. I was not, thankfully, followed around like I was the first time I was in the store, but attribute this to the amount of customers present in the store. I've looked at Google and Yelp reviews and notice the owner putting in a lot of time to trying to dispel customers' experiences which is both not constructive and also patronizing/dismissive if nothing is done over time to address this group of customers' complaints. In the amount of time the owner will likely time to dissect and respond to this review, they could instead 1) educate themselves on the minority shopping experience (try reading "Shopping While Black" by George E. Higgins and Shaun Gabbidon) and/or 2) implement some very easy/practical strategies to address these complaints, which may include: a) stationing someone at the front of the store who instead of selecting a few choice customers to follow around and intimidate, devotes a good deal of their time to greeting every customer that comes in with a warm welcome and letting them know there's an additional floor above or any specials they're having 2) letting everyone know to *** "Please let us know if you have any questions!*** instead of following them around like a ball and chain. I've seen the owner address these complaints by saying that this (ball and chain) is a tactic that has been warmly received by the community and that contributes to a feeling of good customer service, but this has been disproven by the feedback and reviews, so....? If letting the customer know that employees are there to help them is the priority, why not articulate that directly and let the customer browse on their own terms instead of continuing to blindly follow the same practices that distances and makes uncomfortable a large group of your customer base? So, persons of color: beware, go in here for gifting inspiration (and maybe do as I did and note the title of a cookbook, march right across the street to the neighborhood bookstore and gave those lovely welcoming folks my dollars instead)-- but don't expect to go in here and have a fun shopping experience. read more

Lots of great bits and bobs in this store! They have some groceries and pantry goods towards the bank and a beautiful curated collection of crystals and candles in the main area. On the upper level, they have clothing and other accessories. I almost bought this long blush pink faux fur coat. Almost. Ha! My friend bought a lovely pair of boots that were on sale. My husband and I go to beautiful cold spring a few times a month. When we go we always stop in Cold Spring General Store. They have something for everyone! Beautiful candles, jellies, candies, clothing for men and women, great items to decorate your home abs beautiful jewelry. Besides all the great merchandise, one of the reasons I love coming here are the staff! They are amazing. The owner is so kind and appreciative and the rest of the staff are fantastic as well. Shout out to Rebecca who is the best! She always has a smile on her face and know all her customers. She is so pleasant and helpful. She will help you find exactly what you are looking for. Lovely little shop with beautiful items. I didn't appreciate being gawked at and followed through the store though. After about 20 minutes of us browsing, cashiers made their way to where we were browsing and it was obvious that they thought they knew what our intentions were. Despite this, I did make a purchase, but I most certainly will not be returning. What a pity that we were treated so unkind and despite our Hispanic names and looks, our money was accepted. If you're in the area, you HAVE TO stop into this store! (and not just because it's not a chain store!) Being the girl that I am, I was drawn in by the word "sale" so I walked in here after brunch for a quick look. I didn't really plan on getting anything but my bf picked up a green tea and jar of garlic pickles. (they were delicious and a must try btw!) When we went to check out, we were $1 short and the shop owner literally pulled the dollar out of his own pocket to spot us. This NEVER happens but we were so shocked by the generosity! However, I will never return (despite living in this town) because I had an extremely uncomfortable and bad service experience. Cute store, but the experience was soured by a staff member who followed us around the store for the duration of our time there. After picking up a tote bag to purchase we were asked to keep it at the counter, instead of holding on to it while shopping. When I walked upstairs to browse a staff member followed me so closely it was obvious they were sent to make sure I wasn't going to steal anything. Pretty nice selection of a bit of everything in here. More like a curated high end General Store with all types of things for the home, and gifts for that hard to please person. They feature locally sourced handmade goods from artisan makers throughout the Hudson Valley and New York. Books, kitchen stuff, snacks, edibles, teas, blankets, cards, and other unique items. A bit on the pricey side but you're paying for the quality and selection of what they offer. We also loved shopping at "The Barn" which is right next door and part of this shop. It's open seasonally on weekends, highlighting local provisions, jams, clothing, and cold drinks. I popped in here when I took a recent trip to Cold Spring, and I was impressed. The store is focused on local area goods, and the shop seems to radiate warmth. The saleswoman was really lovely and I liked everything in the store (they also had a beautiful selection of fresh flowers in the back) that you could buy. I stopped in here to peruse the different offerings in this General Store. The exterior of it looks fantastic and beacons you to walk inside. Inside, you will come across a lot of high-end items for your home. For someone with a really large budget, you may walk out a happy camper. But, for me, when I noticed that on their craft beer, that they charged a good % higher than any other store in the area, I was disappointed. Some of the cheese and meats from local farms, I can understand the premium price point. But, when you are an already expensive 6-pack, bomber or growler, to charge a large premium to other area retailers is something that turns serious craft beer fans on tighter budgets away from buying from this place. read more

Stopped into the Cold Spring General Store on a trip up "north" this past weekend, and was immediately impressed. They've curated a great collection of handmade goods, edibles, books and paper goods; the staff is warm and welcoming to boot. I can't remember the last time that, to me, "browsing" really meant looking at every item in a store. Granted, the store is small enough that checking out everything in it isn't particular daunting, but that isn't the point: the point is that I wanted to buy every. single. thing. in there. I ended up grabbing a clutch, handmade my Grace Design (she's on Etsy if you want to find her). Yes, I may have used it the next day and yes, I may have gotten compliments on it already. I'm not a local so I can't speak to how great this store is for the neighborhood, but as an out-of-towner, I'll absolutely be checking it out the next time I'm in Cold Spring, if that counts for anything. read more

What a terrible vibe this place had. My wife and I walked in with a sign that said "friendly dogs only" plastered on the door. When I saw a dog on a dog bed inside, I thought "great, he must be friendly!" When I reached out my hand, the man at the register said "no!" In a very authoritative way. Okay, he wasn't super polite but "always let a sleeping dog lie," as they say. Then again, why have a mean dog out in the open in your store? I tried to shake it off. Then as we walked amidst the craft beer and then upstairs to the clothes, a woman followed us the ENTIRE time. Another Yelper posted this and it is 100% accurate and completely unnecessary. I put some trash in my back pocket and she immediately jumped on it and said "oh, I can take that for you." You'd think this would have been polite or something, but it wasn't. Something just felt off about her following us and the general vibe of the place, and there's a difference between politeness and kindness that these people haven't grasped or don't care to. Excellent! We are very lucky to have this little shop in Cold Spring. It opened earlier in 2014. They sell a variety of items that are all well made and carefully selected from their partners. At the General Store, you will find things such as: loose leaf tea, awesome blankets (I bought one), notepads, greeting cards, real maple syrup, books, cups, and so much more. I purchased a really nice blanket as a Christmas gift - it was 15% off - even better! The blanket was $72, but I can tell it is very high quality, as is everything in this store. As I mentioned, the owners are meticulous about what they choose to carry. I didn't buy them, but I distinctly remember an amazing pair of scissors sitting on one of the tables for $8. They were very classic looking. Might have to get them next time! The owners are so nice and clearly care a lot about the community and their store. I have to say that when I heard that they were going to open a general store on main street in Cold Spring at the former Hudson Valley Outfitters I thought it was a bad idea. Who would not just got to Food Town? This is a real high end store and a great asset to main street Cold Spring. They are not competing with Food Town, they are in a class of their own. It is a really nice specialty shop. It is not the place you go bread and milk. It is for unique gifts and gourmet food items. A perfect place to buy something for a picnic by the river. They even have tap beer for sale that you pump into your own cool glass bottle. We need more of this type of place in Cold Spring. read more
