Only minor complaint is that there's nowhere to sit if you wanted to take a pause and read something for a bit, but the space is on the smaller side, so I understand why that might not be practical for them. read more

A wonderful bookstore with such a variety of reading material and adorable mascot- George. I came across this bookstore and had the most pleasant conversation with strangers and the owners. They had such a wide array of books, and inreceived so many recommendations from people, it was fantastic. I absolutely loved the vibe and their mascot! I got 3 books for under $50 so it was definitely a bit of a splurge, but I'm quite happy with my choices. read more

The owner is shockingly rude. I'm a local author and called to introduce myself, hoping to ask if they would consider selling my books. Before I could even finish my sentence, she cut me off with, "Just email me your information," and hung up. I'm not exaggerating--this was exactly how it happened. Cool bookstore and good variety of books! There's nothing like walking into a book store and snooping around judging books by their covers. I bought two kids books while in there. There's no special deal or discounts you're paying the printed price but that's the price we pay when we support local shops so it's all good! They also have some fun stationary items as well. I loved this bookshop and spent a good deal of time perusing its shelves. Great selection of queer-themed books for all ages in honor of Pride month. Also a good selection of titles for Juneteenth. All sections of this spacious store were impeccably organized and offered a great variety of categories and genres and titles I might not have come across otherwise. The staff seemed very knowledgeable besides being extremely friendly. They actually thanked me for coming in and for making my purchase and asked if I was interested in becoming a member. I don't know of many independent bookstores featuring a membership program. If I were local, I sure would have joined because their selection is so good. read more

This is an excellent, local bookshop. It's logically-organized with a great selection. If you need something that happens to be out of stock, the staff are very helpful and can put you on a list to notify you when it's available. This is a great bookstore. The selection is very well-curated; they've almost always had what I came looking for, but they also have tons of stuff that is perfect for browsing through and finding something unexpected. The children's selection is especially nicely stocked; they almost always have whatever I'm looking for, which is honestly quite rare for me even at a large chain brick-and-mortar store. But the adult fiction and non-fiction sections are also really thoughtfully stocked. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful, and ordering or pre-ordering a book is very simple and convenient. Periodic events are a nice addition to the community, too - I've only been to the children's storytimes, but there are book clubs and readings and other events as well. It's a small space so I have been wonderfully surprised by how comprehensive and convenient it is! I haven't felt the need to order a book online since we started shopping here. read more

Such a fantastic addition to Cold Spring and the general area. The owners and everyone who work there are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I've picked up multiple books in recommendation by the owners, and I regularly shop here for friends and gifts. This store is also a great complement to the equally-amazing Binnacle Books in Beacon. The kids and YA sections are also the best of any store within miles, and they regularly have readings and events, which are also awesome. Like all bookstores, they can only survive if locals shop there instead of shopping at Amazon or B&N, and a store like this is a local gem that should be frequented as often as possible to keep it around forever! What an excellent bookstore! Their open and inviting store hosts a well-curated selection of literary fiction, children's books, and a few genre sections. I was impressed by their sci-fi/fantasy section (they're getting harder to find these days), which had all of the classics and best recent books. The owners are lovely and really know their stock. It's hard for my partner and I to find a store that caters to both of us quite so well as this one did. (He leans more literary, me more speculative.) Split Rock was a great way to relax after a hike and also stands up well against NYC's best stores. read more

Split Rock is a really wonderful bookstore with a fabulous collection of children's books. We have been searching for awhile for some full sized Elsa Beskow books to replace my childhood copies that were destroyed in a basement flood. I couldn't find them anywhere (just the mini versions) and worried they were out of print. Nope! If you can't find something come here- they had the full sized original versions that my family loves. Such a horrible interaction with the owner:( I was in there with my 4 y/o and 7 y/o -- we were back in the kids section picking out our books and he yelled at us saying we were going to damage the books (because the stack was on the floor) and that we were not allowed to sit on the floor. I assured him we were not damaging the books and the pile was what we intended to purchase -- he then grabbed the books in a huff, put them on the bench and said "this is for sitting!" I asked him if he was okay and he said "forget it, just get out!" Truly the most shocking experience I've ever had in a book store -- especially with little ones. Shame on you, Split Rock. read more

I love independent bookstores so much and Split Rock Books is among the best. The selection here is great and I saw so many interesting titles that I've never seen anywhere else. While I was here, I spent most of my time on the kids section looking for new and interesting books for my kids. The selection was so great that it was so hard to only choose a few. I saw many titles from international authors which is something that you don't see at most of the bigger stores. If you love books, I'd definitely recommend checking out this bookstore. read more

I want to support local book stores but the people here are the rudest ever. I was shopping to buy some books but now we're never coming back. the shelves are poorly organized and messy so very hard to find what you want. In the mean time, my kid touched a book that was already slightly creased in a corner, and the store pretty much tried to force us to buy it because a little toddler happen to have been caught with it. If you don't want a kids to touch any books, then don't be so dumb to put it on a lower shelf. Good luck, no wonder stores like you are going out of business. read more
