This…read moreparticular location is the oldest of the state and one of the oldest in the USA in general since they opened way back in 1886. Due to the nature of how long this particular location has been opened some of the areas can feel very crowded depending on how many people are nearby but understandable with how long they've been open. Like other Sherman locations they have more than just books including puzzles, stuffed animals, Knick-knacks/trinkets, and more. My wife is an avid reader and loves checking out every and any bookstore. I appreciate locating them for her so she can do so! While not as much of an avid reader I do appreciate what appears to be a resurgence of physical books and indie book stores. The staff were extremely friendly and prices were reasonable/on par with other locations. This Sherman's has stood the test of time and has provided locals and tourists a spot for the newest and classic favorites for many generations. Worth your time to check it out even if you don't buy anything to make the claim you visited the oldest bookstore in Maine!

Walking into Sherman's Maine Coast Book Shop felt like stepping into a classic coastal bookstore you'd see in a movie. It's Maine's oldest bookstore and one of the ten oldest in the U.S., which makes the whole experience feel even more special. Right on Main Street, it's super easy to find while strolling through Bar Harbor, but heads up, parking is mostly street parking and can get tight during peak tourist hours. Inside, there's truly a gift for everyone. It feels endless, with multiple rooms and shelves that just keep going. The vibe is cozy, slightly nostalgic, and packed with personality. Think local Maine authors, staff picks, cute gifts, puzzles, and little trinkets you didn't plan on buying but absolutely will. There's also a discount and bargain section with a really solid variety of books, which is a great find if you're looking to browse without spending too much. Postcards were also super affordable! The service was decent, nothing unusual, but still smooth and easy while browsing and checking out. I'd absolutely come back every time I'm in Bar Harbor. Quick note: there is no bathroom on site, so plan ahead before visiting!

One of my favorite places to visit in all of Maine!!!!!…read more If you are anywhere near Belfast, ME or looking to get off Route 1 and see a bit of the countryside; This is a great place to stop and recharge! The woman who runs the store is Diana and she is amazing. She has the most unique items in her store from all over Maine and beyond. Lots of antiques and neat stuff for almost any room in your house. Make sure to inquire about the letter press she owns. She showed me pictures of the Gutenberg letter press she uses to make the beautiful cards and prints. Her skill is unmatched and eye for detail is unmatched OH... she bakes all kinds of yummy treats. My personal favorite is the ginger cookies..and the bread. She makes the best tasting organic items you'll ever find. If you are having a party she also says she does some catering events. She also has rail bikes for rent! You'll get to pedal bikes that run along the rail road tracks and it's a blast..and a work out. Kip is a great guy who works there and loves to chat and will help ya with the bikes. It is such a great way to see Maine. She said she has a facebook page but She's working on a webpage. I live in Colorado and visiting Maine is wonderful. I love getting off route 1 and seeing the country side in the summer. 25 Gordon Hill Road Thorndike, ME 04986-3227 (207) 568-3523

The woman running this place has wonderful taste, a light hand with the pricing, and a talent for letterpress printing: she makes all kind of clever cards, including page-markers for cookbooks (now why didn't I think of that?) She sells some locally-made food products, but mostly she sells things I would buy if I had an inch of extra room: a heavy, elegant hand-crocheted tablecloth with deep fringe ($18.00), handsome pitchers from local potters (ok, I bought the one with the rabbits) and funny old toys and gadgets. I also passed up a child's quilt embroidered with nursery rhyme characters. if you need it, it's still there. This is AFTER you've visited Bryant's Stove Museum and BEFORE you've eaten at the CrossTrax Cafe in nearby Unity. You've got yourself the agenda for a marvelous day.

This shop has the BEST lip balms, perfume oils, and soaps I've ever used! I haven't tried the bath…read moresoaks or lotions yet, but since their other products have surpassed my expectations for quality and value, I'll be using the entire line as soon as they're restocked. I've been troubled for years with dry, burning lips- even during the summer! I've tried every brand out there- organic, handmade, etc. Only Long Winter Soap lip balm has ameliorated this problem for me. I'm THRILLED! The flavors are delish! The perfume oils have been very exciting for me as well because I'm not able to use commercial perfumes without developing headaches. I had resigned myself to not wearing any perfumes or body sprays. I'm very impressed with the fact that Long Winter Soap Company doesn't use any alcohol in their perfume oils! I was afraid to give them a chance, but for $10, WHY NOT TRY???? I'm so glad I did. I'm OBSESSED with the blends and how long they last. Unbelievable! The two bars of soap I've used were exceptional as well. I cut each bar in half and keep it in an open soap box. I just make sure it's not sitting in water, and the entire bar lasted 6 weeks. The scents are great, and my skin is clean, not gummy, or stripped. I love it. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the professional, efficient, and top-notch customer service. Not only does the owner answer emails quickly, she got my *multiple* holiday orders out before Christmas, she did it despite Maine weather obstacles. Another awesome feature for online shoppers: the website shows EXACTLY how many items remain in inventory so you can shop intelligently. Also, if a product you want is out of stock, they have an automatic notification service so you will know immediately when its back in stock! I can't say enough about this wonderful business!!!!
