This small cafe asks 1 Euro for using the toilet. The service was also quite rude. We can't recommend this place.

This restaurant is deceptive. It's located in Nussdorferplatz, just in front of the Zielpunkt…read more(second from the last **or first** stop on the D S-bahn line). From the outside, hubby and I thought - wow, looks charming, quaint, lets try it. Walked into what can only be described as a quasi-modern bar with a non smoking section off to the side. Ok, we were committed, plus we were hungry and it is freezing out these days. Not what we expected, but we're willing to try anything once. Very friendly and prompt service, that's what bumped it in my mind from probably 2.5 stars to three. Hubby ordered a beer from the tap (they only have Ottakringer on tap), after a confusing moment where the woman asked if he wanted a small (0,2) or a large (0,5) he noted that per the menu's offerings, he wanted a medium (0,3). Ok, she got it (or so we thought until the 0,5 came out...) As an aside, while not surprising for here, we were charged for the 0,5 liter vice what we ordered, but that's par for the course. This is really a bar, not a restaurant. The sum total of what they have to eat is less then 10 items, the first several consisted of sandwiches, ham and toast, a prosciutto plate that promises huge capers, mozzarella and tomato salad, several varieties of gulasch and a couple of different wursts. If it had been warmer I would have gone back outside to look at their specials board, but I was not brave enough and those offerings were neither in the memory of the waitress nor anywhere to be found. Plus the waitress was wearing a tank top (again, see weather report above) and I wasn't going to ask her to go back out. So I settled on a wurst. Hubby ordered the gulasch soup. The wurst was advertised as spicy. It wasn't. It was a good sausage, but nothing to write home about. Menu said it came with a roll, which it did, though we laughed later that we were charged for extra rolls that we hadn't ordered. The wurst came typical Austrian style, descent sized links, plate had some horseradish and a side of mustard. By a side of mustard I mean a small package of mustard that looks like something you'd get at the state fair, but I digress. Hubby said the gulasch was ok. So, would I go back? Meh, probably not - there are a lot of other places in the vicinity that look a lot more promising. That said, in the summer when they open their patio, it's a great location and the friendly service is an anomaly. A welcome one at that. The woman even said to us, "come back and visit us again." I haven't heard that since I got here. So I'd probably drop by, but not for food. If you're of the gluten variety though, they appeared to have a well stocked dessert selection. Prices were reasonable, 0,5 liters of beer were 3,50 EUROS, the wurst was 4,30 and the gulasch suppe was 4,80. And in case you're wondering, the rolls were ,90.

We then proceeded insude to have a light dinner, the wait was minimal. They took our coats and seated us. The waiter took our orders. We had beef soups, and beef goulash. The food was good not outstanding. We were so full we could not have any additional dessert. Once our order was taken we never saw the waiter again. No one checked on us and we waited so long for the Check, we had to ask two different people. I expected better service at this type of establishment.

We had both dinner and dessert as well as coffee. The schnitzel was impeccable--well seasoned, moist meat, and not oily nothing like the subpar versions I have had at home. Our youngest had a bread dumpling with mushrooms--this was rich but delicious as well. For dessert, we had the Landtmann original and apple strudel. Both cake slices were moist and flavorful.... hands down both desserts were the best we sampled while in Austria (and narrowly edged out Demel for us). The decaf coffee was fantastic as well.... although we were so impressed by the food we were equally grateful for the exemplary service--prompt and friendly. Will dream about visiting this cafe again! I'm surprised at the mediocre reviews.... this was one of our favorite spots in Vienna!
