Decent amount of benches and there is a nice table under a gazebo type situation.. perfect for enjoying a lunch in the park. The best part are the trees!! I had no idea that there were many different trees planted in the park--with the added value of being able to read what kind of tree you were lucky enough to come across. I find that so dope and a great unexpected lesson in science for my LO. She found it quite interesting. And the best kept secret.. there is a butterfly park in the back of the park with seems to be a cool trail.. I was just too chicken to go since it was about dusk and no one else accompanied us. Just another reason to come back really soon!

There is also a cute butterfly garden adorned with colorful stones, benches, and paintings. Not much has changed since I came here as a little kid- there are still long walkways in which kids can learn how to ride their bikes, big trees to charade around, and park benches to rest on. Would highly recommend for any family or person looking for a nice place to walk and play.

A park on the former site of a mental institution??? I had to check it out as soon as I heard that!…read moreOpen about ten days, this cute, 256-acre park certainly has a rich and storied past. The tract of land started off as three private farms in the 19th century. Those properties were purchased by the state of New Jersey in 1898 to establish the New Jersey State Village for Epileptics. In 1952, it was converted into the New Jersey Neuropsychiatric Institute, and in the 1970's into a center for those with mental and developmental disabilities. Sadly, none of the 100+ state buildings stand today. Much of the land had become an environmental brownfield over the last century. That has now been fully remediated. The only visible remnant from its institutional past is the layout of the idyllic 2-mile, tree-lined, paved trail that's built along the original road. That layout dates back to 1901! So now that the crumbling buildings and wastelands are gone, what will you actually find when you visit? An easy-to-navigate, system of scenic flat trails, almost all paved, that meanders through a combination of grasslands, light woods, and streams. In creating the landscaping, Somerset County Parks clearly attempted to make the area as pretty as possible, particularly along Rock Brook and its tributaries. Smack, dab, in the middle of the park, though, lies an elementary school. The largest parking lot in the park sits across from this school. Montgomery High School lies just outside the park's borders. This is my second visit. Both times, we were the only people on foot. Everyone else was a road cyclist. That may change as more people hear about the park. If you're looking for an easy 2-3 mile walk or run, try this little gem!

I have been traveling near this park for years and never knew about this nice little escape located off Harlingen Road. The kid's playground looks good and they even got a zipline for them, so I'm sure kids really enjoy it because it looks like fun. The Veterans and 911 Memorial is a great addition because it reminds us of the many innocent people who lost their lives fighting for this country or those who were just in the city working on that unforgettable day on September 11, 2001. I love being in nature and the Arboretum is the perfect place to just relax and explore while listening to the birds sing to you! Playground, pathways, restroom, picnic/pavilion area (2),grills, fire pit, lighted basketball courts (2), lacrosse fields, softball fields, sand volleyball. We rode the paths (2x around) for about a 3.5 mile distance. In the more wooded sections we saw a family of deer from no more than 15 feet away, they watched us as we watched them crossing the path. People all had their dogs on leashes and everyone was polite/friendly. A nice scenic place to ride/walk if you want to get out of your neighborhood these days.

Washington Rock Park is more of a scenic overlook than it is a park and unfortunately you're not…read moregonna find any Hiking Trails or outdoor Picnic Areas with Grills anywhere near here, but it is still a pretty cool Historic New Jersey Landmark plus it was an important part of the Revolutionary War.     In May of 1777 this mountain overlook provided General George Washington's Army a vantage point in order to see the British encampments below which solidified an edge for any future troop engagements.    Long story short, the mountain's sheer height and location made it the perfect observation site and natural defensible fort. Definitely worth checking out if you ever find yourself in this immediate area. Come And Get Your History On!!

Eventually the path ended to a grassy area with a sign pointing to the mansion where we found the water tower and garden area. The garden was quite nice. Loved seeing the water tower (and appreciated the signage explaining the history and inner workings). Pro tip for newbies like us: You can walk on the road or drive closer to the mansion instead of taking the woodsy path. Oh, also there are NO trashcans at this location (even for doggy doo bags, diapers, etc), so come prepared. No nearby restroom to the garden either.

It's perfect for a quiet stroll while observing the wide variety of…read moreplant and birds, walking the dogs or just kicking back on one of the many park benches placed throughout the park and relaxing. The paths are also widely used by joggers and the occasional bicycle rider, although it seems a little short for that to me. The main trail is called the poetry trail, and the name is no lie as poems are spaced along the path at various locations. I've never been able to appreciate poetry as much as I'd like (I'd do much better on the SciFi trail if it's ever built), but I do like how the poems invite you to try to appreciate your experience in the park at an intellectual level rather than just sensorial. Tennis shoes are fine on this hike, although if there's been a rain, they might get a little sloshy when you head off of the paved path and onto the dirt paths--which you should do. Don't forget to walk around the parking lot and head up the trail which leads along the creek. It doesn't offer a loop, but it's worth the short extra distance. The park is also adjacent to the D&R Greenway building. Make certain to take yourself inside if it's opened. The people there are helpful, and they've information on the park and other hikes to be found in the area.

Located off Rosedale Road, the D&R Greenway Land Trust includes Greenway Meadows Park and a 55-acre…read moretract of public open space land that abuts the Johnson Park School, the Hun School, Jasna Polana, and Princeton International School of Mathematics and Science (i.e. the former campus of the  American Boychoir School). There are about 20 miles of paved and dirt trails throughout the tract, including a number through the woods and along the banks of the gurgling Stonybrook stream. The wooded dirt trails, in particular, don't see a lot of foot traffic. Thus, they may occasionally become overgrown with ground cover in the summer. For the most part though, the Princeton Parks Department does a very nice (and prompt) job of keeping these clear and removing fallen trees and debris after bad storms. There is a clearing with soccer fields, a playground, and picnic areas in the middle of Greenway Meadows Park. These are conveniently located adjacent to one of the paved parking lots. Up a gentle slope from the soccer fields sits the Johnson Education Center, which is housed in a circa 1900 barn, and near to that, is a 1-mile looped poetry trail sporting 48 poems. You can also enjoy the Edward T. Cone Grove, the Hartman Garden Path, the Carroll K. and Frederick P. King, Jr. Terrace, the Ellsworth Terrace, and Meredith's Garden for Inspiration, a garden filled with native plants and nature-inspired sculptures. The Education Center offers a number of programs with local experts. Personally, I prefer to explore on my own. The wooded section has proven most interesting so far. This area is great for birdwatching. Along the streams, I'll also routinely encounter turtles, frogs, toads, and my personal favorite, bullfrogs. It's also just a great spot for a relaxing walk or quick trail run. I can typically get in an easy 3-5 miles here without even thinking.
