Washington Rock Park is more of a scenic overlook than it is a park and unfortunately you're not gonna find any Hiking Trails or outdoor Picnic Areas with Grills anywhere near here, but it is still a pretty cool Historic New Jersey Landmark plus it was an important part of the Revolutionary War.     In May of 1777 this mountain overlook provided General George Washington's Army a vantage point in order to see the British encampments below which solidified an edge for any future troop engagements.    Long story short, the mountain's sheer height and location made it the perfect observation site and natural defensible fort. Definitely worth checking out if you ever find yourself in this immediate area. Come And Get Your History On!! read more

This park is amazing and fun. We stopped here for some adventure, and we got it. I am not one for rock climbing or any type of hobby like that, but I enjoyed the excising and scenic view of the park. My first time here, but my girlfriend has come here many times growing up out here. We went hiking, in which it is kind of a new sport for me now. I saw lots of monuments of history here at this park. You can find good parking here if you do not come on a crowded day. I had a good experience here. read more

Awesome views , great picnickers has a few tables once in the past they has grills but had been removed . Note please bring tons of bug spray and off ! They have two spy glasses unit think they take a Quarter . Great place to take wedding pictures for sure . The negative is very limited on parking and bathrooms. Washington Rock State Park has been designated a park primarily because of its historical significance rather than because of its utility as a place to do the things that one expects to do at a park. Aside from the view from the scenic overlook, this glorified outcrop is a major disappointment and probably not worth the trip for out-of-towners. Parking: Parking is about a dozen spaces in a tiny lot at a sharply curved intersection of Rock Road East and Rock Road West. If you're a pedestrian, watch out for cars as you cross the road. If you're a car, watch out for children, dogs, frisbees, and other cars. Amenities: The park's amenities include a single coin-operated binocular, a few picnic tables, and one porta-potty. You could try having a picnic here, but the mosquitoes and wasps already have dibs on the picnic tables. Trail: The so-called trail on the parking lot side is barely suitable for walking, let alone jogging: it's only about two feet wide, poorly blazed, sparsely marked, and littered with rocks, uneven tree roots, random logs. Don't worry about getting lost: if you wander too far west you'll just end up in someone's backyard. read more

A pleasant surprise while looking for hiking trails this side of Jersey. Start with the Orange Trail as a pre-game for the amazing view that will follow. The trail begins right by the parking area for easy access. The leaves in the autumn are amazing and provide a great backdrop for a romantic afternoon. Head across the street to Washington Rock, which is absolutely breathtaking. Say a prayer, meditate, thank God (or the universe, of Zoltan) for the Garden State, and the present company included! read more

Great view from the top of the mountain. The history of this park goes back to 1777 during the American Revolution when General George Washington watched British troops from this high viewpoint. The signs give you the details. Makes you think how physically fit those men were. There are 2 binocular units that help you see in the distance ~ NYC to the left. Website has many photos. From the parking lot is a hiking trail - follow the orange blaze. It's a nice place to spend an hour or so. Have been going there periodically for 50 years. I have been to many parks and look outs. This park is huge but limited. You can go through walks on the trails and hike around. My favorite part is the look out. If your on a date there is a picnic area you can sit out and look out and have it be romantic. If your there with your kids you can explore nature and look out and see all the trees and hills and different elevation levels. Or if you just want to go your self and get away and feel free. The one thing about this place is you have to check it out every season. Each season its always a different view. I love going in fall because you can see all the colors of the leaves. Winter I like to see the snow. Cant forget this. The time of day. NIGHT to DAY. wow at night its absolutely beautiful. You see all the lights and bridge lights out over yonder. very remarkable sight to see from coming in the day. I needed a place to think, get my emotions together, cry, release and plan. Washington Rock is the perfect place for that and more. The scenery is beautiful and if you need or want to be alone, you can do that as well. Washington Rock has been here for as long as I can remember. Love it. read more

My boyfriend and I came here around 9:30pm thinking it would be deserted. However, there were A LOT of teenagers hanging out. There was a group idling in their car in the parking lot blasting music and yelling nonsense. The view is scenic/spectacular. We have gone here during the day and it's nice, but it was really cool to see at night. To the guy in the black Acura with a New York license plate: quit getting handjobs and stop taking up two parking spots in an already very limited parking lot. We are driving a mini van which is essentially a space shuttle. We needed that parking spot. read more

Nice park to come and overlook the area. Beautiful place for photo shooting. Can pick you up some food and bring and sour and enjoy a picnic our dinner. Did not see any grills. But did not walk the entire area. I can see myself returning here too enjoy quiet time read more

Great park for a scenic overlook and a nice time. Only concern is that it is very crowded on warm days, which would be expected, but the people sometimes counteract a plan to have quiet peace. You can see the Statue of Liberty if you look closely, and the entire skyline of Manhattan. Unbelievable spot, and great historical destination. I am not immediately local to this park, which is why I am not giving it 5 stars--I would not drive more than 25 minutes to visit this park unless I was already really close or passing that area, AND wanted to picnic. It is very small. It is in a residential area, so while it is small, it also has cars driving by, so not somewhere I recommend throwing a ball with the dog or kid unless you were alone. It is historically interesting, so I am glad I went, and it is really amazing how far you can see from that point--hence it's importance during the Revolutionary War. read more

Beautiful view of Manhattan from this rock on a clear day! You can even bring some food to the rock and have a picnic in the grass or on one of the picnic tables. Great day trip to do with your family! Highly suggest coming here! read more

There's a small parking lot across from the cliff. There are places to sit and a couple viewing stations that take a quarter. You will get cool photos from the cliff area. Not much of an area to hike, so I probably won't be back. read more

One of my favorite hiking spots in New Jersey. I used to live right down the street from Washington Rock and we used to sit on the bench and check out the NYC skyline. Great views during the day and night. There's walking trails and picnic areas with scenic views, definitely worth checking out during Fall and Summer as the scenery changes. read more

Great place to just hang out and take a breath. The only thing I would recommend would be DO NOT LITTER. This is a historical landmark - there is so much trash below the viewing area. It's quite sad actually. That being said the town should have some sort of system in place that cleans the trash up. Even if it's just once a month or something. read more

Pretty overlook with a small walking loop through the woods. I came here thinking it was a place to hike so I was disappointed to find this is more of a scenic overlook than a real hiking trail. Nonetheless, this is a pretty spot to take in some elevated views of Jersey and the surrounding area. read more

"mountain"-top (by NJ standards) park with a pretty nice view of the plains of central Jersey, some interesting history since it was used as a lookout post by General George Washington during the Revolutionary War, and a short loop hiking trail through the woods which is fairly pleasant despite the fact that you are basically looking though the woods at people's back yards .. the view is supposedly up to 30 miles, but with NJ's relatively high humidity I suspect one can only see well that far on a cold but sunny winter day. i saw a few woodpeckers and a lot of other birds on the trail through the woods. there are a few picnic tables, some 25 cent (bring a quarter) view scopes to admire the view, a paved parking lot, and a primitive toilet read more

Beautiful spot to picnic, go for a home or even take a date. It's extremely scenic to walk around the park or to go the the lookout and see New York City as well as all the little towns in between. Not a great deal of parking though so you may be better off parking down the road and walking a little on beautiful days. read more

It's a cool spot and definitely impressive that GW used this as a lookout during the Revolutionary War. If you're on top of the rock structure and look a little to your left, you get a pretty good view of Manhattan. All around, you have a solid view of different spots in NJ. The hiking trail is definitely not impressive, however. If anything, it's disappointing. You can do the entire loop in about 15 minutes, and as another reviewer already mentioned, you're walking in people's backyards. There are a few picnic tables but the view is the real draw here. There's a small parking lot and it's a decent enough place to stop for a great view on a nice day. read more

Came here this afternoon and had a great time. I've lived In nj all my life and never knew this place ever existed. All the way to left you can see the nyc skyline and the Rutgers stadium to the right. Lots of picnic tables so pack a lunch! Also, Make sure you bring a quarter to use the binoculars! read more
