Colonial Penn is selling you what they call "UNITS", higher coverage = more units = higher costs. 12 units would cost me $119.40 / month for $14,004 of coverage. This might cover burial expenses but there would not be much left over for other expenses and this is much more than $9.95! This is the worst experience I have ever had with a company. My husband passed, but before he did he bought additional "blocks" of coverage. They took advantage of an older person who did not understand that each new "block" was an additional account. I paid for 2 of his 4 accounts, neither of which covered his cremation and burial. Thank God the VA buried him for free because he was a Vietnam vet. Now, 3 months later, I am still fighting for a mere $600 to cover what they did not on his policies. They claim I am entitled to that money and have also claimed to have issued and stopped payment of said check three times. If you are on hold too long, your call will be disconnected. The next issue is the language barrier. Anita and Chen are bilingual; I am not. I also have a last name: they do not. QUIZ!!! How many times do I have to repeat my mom's name, dob, dod, policy #, mailing address, phone #.. yada, yada? The answer: 4 times. The number of times they ask for my checking acct # when I opened this policy? The answer: 2 times. Almost forgot ... Chen wanted to know if I was the insured. Could somebody tell me how to say, 'No. I'm not dead" in Chinese, Spanish and Filipino? That should cover all my bases, shouldn't it? read more

Colonial Penn's elder insurance scare-a-thon always seems to be right around the next bend of commercials where Perry Mason meets some mystery air fryer and miracle arthritis balm. The come on is simple, the $9.95 cost (per insurance unit) never increases as long as you keep your policy in force. I called as my future elderly self and was rather abruptly told that at 70 years of age each unit of coverage was $500 and the longer I waited, the unit value would go down... at 72 each unit would be worth $425 all with a two year waiting period for full coverage. So... If I was planning a funeral for 20 grand, the monthly premium would be close to $400. At that point, just take me out and shoot me. A complete rip-off. I have had three policies with them for about 10 years. Recently they "Revised" their website. Now it only shows one policy. And when I click on that one, it says No policy found! When I called about this, the agent could not understand. She told me (In broken English) that I had to use a different email address and create a new account. WHAT?? I asked to speak to a supervisor. She also (In broken English) had no idea. All they are trained to do is keep saying I'm sorry for the trouble. I am cancelling my policies. Just a Heads up to everyone about colonial Insurance. Yes, it appears reasonable, however before signing up for the whole insurance at $9.95 per mo/per Unit. That means 1 Unit $1000 at $9.95/mo/ ...5 Units $5k $49.95...10 Units $99.50 and so on. Do the math. Your payments Never Stop until you pass away. They don't really make this Very Clear to people unfortunately. The reality is your Policy is Paid in Full after 8yrs 4mo's. After that you keep paying and that could end yrs later. Say you live just 10yrs., You will have paid $1194. Original 1 Unit $9.95 x 100 mo's...$995. Policy technically Paid in full. But however you're now 120 mo's since you're still here and have continued paying every month as they tell you is a must! Technically you are way over the Original amt. You pass, all they pay out is the Original $995. about $200 less than what was paid. You lose the $200 NOT Refundable! That's what I was told. Caution Folks. You may have a CASH Value in the Policy, but still far short. Best bet about something like this is, Open your own Savings account for the Final Event. also they have a 2yr window upfront before anything would get paid. 2yrs payments at risk. Paid premiums religiously for 4 years, then they sent me a notice that they hadn't received payments for 3 months. When I requested an email to send the processed checks from my bank (proving that I had indeed paid), they refused to provide one and instead gave me a snail mail address to send the paperwork in (promising resolution in 3-4 weeks!). If this is how they handle a simple matter, I shudder to think how they would treat beneficiaries in a claim! I found life insurance through a more reputable company. I applied for a policy in 2022, almost a year after paying premiums on time every month Colonial Penn started sending my bill saying I owed for the previous month. I know they were paid on time because I was paying through bill pay at my bank. When I called them after a few months of them saying they were not receiving my payments they still claimed they had not received several payments. I called my bank and was shown that they received these payments. So what were they doing with the payments? I stopped payment on the last payment and cancelled the policy. I purchased a whole life policy from this company. They never answer the phone, customer service is horrible. They leave you on hold for hours. This company, with their constant adds off $9.99 per month, bit of more than they can chew. They mismanage your account. They do not take the payments out, and force you to cancel after you have paid for months because of the shady way they do business. After taking over my parent's personal finances upon the recent passing of my mother, I came across this ridiculous life insurance policy from Colonial Penn. The policy was put into effect on "2/18/2002", and it's now 2/25/2021. My parents have made monthly payments of "$188.49" for over 19 years. ($188.49 X 12 (months) = $2,261.88 (yearly premiums) X 19 (years) = $42,975.72. After creating an online login, and gathering more information on the policy, I determined the net death benefit amount was only $21,000.00! My parents would have been better off keeping their hard earned income in a bank, or under a mattress, rather then wasting it on this ridiculous life insurance policy. I should also mention that they have a wonderful loan option of $10k+ dollars at an 8% interest rate if you ever need to borrow money from Colonial Penn. I could secure a far better interest rate through a HELOC (home equity line of credit). Their other life insurance policies with Nationwide and Northwestern Mutual pay in the low 6-figure range. These policies were worth having! I couldn't believe my eyes when I read the death benefit amount. If you're ever solicited by this company, do not waste your time and money. The reviews on sites like NerdWallet are unfavorable too. This is your typical life insurance company that takes advantage of unsuspecting customers who are not savvy with investments. Now I have no choice but to keep the policy active in order to get half of the investment back if we're lucky! read more

Worst insurance company ever. My mother died, my dad and I called a few days after. My dad can't live alone and was moving; we gave a new address for the insurance check to be sent. We were told it would arrive in 7-10 days. We waited a month; the check never arrived. Called again, there with my dad, and they told us the check was sent to the old address and that they would reissue the check to the new address. We were told it would take 7 to 10 days, we waited two weeks. It never arrived. My dad tried to communicate about this with Colonial Penn without me and he didn't have the policy number (he gave the paperwork to me as his POA) and they wouldn't use any other identifying info he provided to help him/verify him. So, I called and was told even though I'm POA they need the papers on file which could only be faxed (what is this, 1995?) or mailed. I needed answers now and was happy to email the POA papers on the spot as I have with other companies (remember, there would not have been an issue if they were competent in the first place). On the second call, they were able to tell me the check was never re-sent or canceled. So, there is a life insurance check out there floating around waiting for somebody to forge the signature- colonial Penn was unconcerned with all of this. They refused to give me any more info or explain why we've had to call 3x to collect death insurance. They first customer service rep I spoke to had trouble following what I was saying and made me repeat myself several times. I finally spoke with a supervisor who would not allow me to speak to her higher ups for me to share all of this (first, she said they were tending to an emergency, then said they were in a meeting). She confirmed they would re- issue and it would arrive in 7-10 days. We'll believe it when we see it. She said she would personally follow up. This company is incompetent at best. He literally got mad when I asked to explain the rates/units you pay for and how it worked. He got aggitated at my questions and wanted me to pick which Level he could get me to buy. when I respectfully thanked him (for absolutely not explaining anything but just wanted a sale). He got mean and said he had other callers that were wanting to purchase. In essence, he couldn't be bothered answering questions, just wanted a sale. Even if I had been interested, I would not ever get a policy based on the high pressure and lack of respect for the caller. Never recommend them either. I switched my Medigap policy from Colonial Penn to another company as of Jan 1, 2021.  Colonial has refused to acknowledge this and continued to withdraw funds via ACH from my checking account for premiums they are not entitled to take. They owe me premiums for 3 months and have made me perform like a dog and pony show in a three ring circus.  They do everything they can to screw you.   Repeatedly demand proof of insurance (with the new company) that they have already received 3 times.   Their phone support is just there to wear you down so you'll give up. I have made roughly 10 phone calls to the company, and 4 to the agent, Steve Werner in Lynwood, WA.   After filing a complaint with the WA State Insurance Commissioner, they sent me a "token" refund, about 25% of what they owe me.   I'm sure they did this so that I'll feel that I "won" - - and cash the check and allow them to basically steal from me.   They are wrong.   I don't lay down for anyone, especially a corrupt and seedy insurance company.   I will continue to post negative reviews until I'm fully compensated. If you research this company, you'll see that they have a pattern of cheating their customers.  The policy was with Bankers Life - and underwritten by Colonial Penn.   If you have to buy insurance, RUN from this company as fast as you can! read more

Months later I'm still receiving letters stating they haven't received a response to the filing claims and the funeral parlor still doesn't have their money. Whenever I call I am fed the same line... "check is in the mail, funeral parlor should have it in 7-10 days." This is a poor way to handle a delicate situation. It shouldn't be this hard for grieving families. Colonial Penn, advertised on tv, is a bad life insurance policy, it caters to people who don't know that if they die within the first two years of the "$9.95 Plan," they aren't covered. Colonial Penn will simply return the premiums paid, during that period. I researched it, and for my age (77), the "$9.95 plan" that is advertised to help with a $9,000 funeral, pays only $300. (That is about what Social Security pays as a death benefit.) And It pays upon death what I'd have paid after 2 1/2 yeaars of $9.95 monthly premiums. (so if you can manage to die after 24 moths, but before 30 months, your heirs would receive more than you'd paid in premiums.) Many other life insurance plans have no waiting time, and are more forthright with their lifepolicies. read more

You don't know the value of each unit but it cost $9.99 a month. So what are you getting for real? But because I told the truth on the questionnaire, each unit was worth 6,000 dollars of life insurance. So for $9.99 a month I was purchasing one unit of life insurance worth $6,000.00. Don't think the questions don't matter - they do. Colonial Penn is not honestly presenting the coverages available. If I wanted 20,000 dollars of life insurance, enough to pay for burial and left over bills, I would have to purchase 4 units worth a total of $24,000 but it would cost me $40.00 per month.
