I really had a good time with this and it was fun to run with a crowd around (they were there for the parade, but whatever) a few of the people even cheered for us, which was nice, though most just kind of sat there and stared. The costumes were super fun and the course is pretty easy, all things considered. They did have a bit of a snafu with the shirts this year, they got stuck in customs, but the organizers couldn't really help that. The Front Runners and Walkers seem like a pretty great group for the LGBT community (and their friends/families.)

We were able to pick up our bibs and swag bag the day before at Road Runner Sports. If you couldn't make it, you could also check in on site. It was pretty lowkey run, 700 participants but everyone in high happy spirits. The run takes place right before the Pride Parade and it starts much later than most runs I've been too. They had some great vendors there giving out free stuff, soaps, energy bars and OMG that coconut water was delicious. The person there was handing them out left and right...practically if I wanted to take a 6 pack he would've let me. It actually made a great recovery hydrating drink too since it was so humid that day. (Luckily after we finished the run that's when the torrential downpour came) The run was a "simple" 3.1 miles, pretty flat and what was nice about it was that it actually was on the parade route. So while walking/running/struggling to get to the next personal marker, you had folks setting up for the parade as well as a crowd cheering and supporting you as you hobbled your way down the street. The only thing about the run is that they were very strict on the time limit...55 mins to complete the course...run or walking. If you didn't finish in time, they would escort you to the side of the sidewalk to finish the race. It didn't help to see at the end of the line 4-5 cops on bikes slowly hearding the tail end of the walkers/runners. Overall its a fun run, we got a nice running shirt with it (other than the typical cotton shirts) so I will def be wearing this one again for my runs and a great way to start Pride weekend.

Something about it seemed unorganized, though. Not gonna lie, I'm partly at fault... I parked on 5th expecting the check-in booths to be just before the bridge (like almost every other run I've been to at Balboa Park) come to find out, check-in was at the organ pavilion so by the time I walked my ass against traffic alllllll the way to check in, I had already walked like 2 miles. Anywho, I guess we'll look past that, just means I can have more mac & cheese later... Running the course was good, lots of families, and LOTS of dogs... The only marker I recall seeing was the 2 mile marker and I would have liked to see each mile...There was water at the 2 mile and at the end. It was a good little run... but for $35 registration, I'll have to read up on the politics of it all before I decide whether I should keep it in the rotation or not.

The long sleeved tech shirts they gave were very nice though, they just ran a bit small. Make sure to sign up early to guarantee getting a shirt. After the race, the expo was small but so many samples. Don't forgot your hot buttered rum! I tried the non alcoholic version which was yummy. I volunteered for packet pick up Saturday, day before from 11-2pm at Roadrunner. They gave volunteers the red version of the race shirt, lovin it. Packet pick up seemed easy & very convenient that you can pick up for other people. I had fun meeting people with the same addiction: running, races, medals! Love that they offer 1k race and kids kandy kane race for the baby runners. Definitely want to take my nephew & niece. Can't beat a race starting at 10am! But it did get warmer than I thought it would. And parking was super easy & close. Loved everything about this race and can't wait for next year.

But I also used to run here on the reg when I lived close by. It just makes it hard to find parking since it's limited in the area. Loved the vibes before & after the race. They had a fun DJ/MC with dance offs & warm ups. Everyone was dressed up too! And a lot of booths giving away free things like hats you can bling out, water bottles, sunglasses. Coolest medal ever! The guy dances! Not a fan of their white t-shirt though. They had nice gold winners medals! I unfortunately didn't know they gave it to top 3 in age categories so didn't even check the booth to collect mine or wait for the awards ceremony. I've never been able to receive a winners medal so I was so sad when I found out I could've gotten one but missed the opportunity. So I tried to contact the event coordinators via e-mail & facebook to see if I could pick it up at their Long Beach race, but no answer! I'm obviously still bitter about this. Otherwise would've been 5 stars and I would've done their LB race..

This was the first year for the Disco Fever 5K to be run in San Diego. I've never run a race in SD…read moreso I'm can't speak to how it compares to other races in the area. But compared to other races I've run myself, this was on the small side. Packet pick up at Road Runner's Sports was easy; the process took me less than 10 minutes. The t-shirt is nice and there were some nice snacks and goodies in our race pack. The race is set at the Embracadero and run along the running path along the harbor. Despite it starting at 730am (first wave) there are still tourists taking a stroll and other non-race runners out so you gotta watch out for them too. I loved the warm up--even if you weren't participating, it was nice to have the music playing and the emcee keeping things fun and light. There was some runner support with volunteers cheering on the racers at a few different points and the water station half way through. I didn't dress for the theme (sorry!) but I did appreciate the different disco costumes I saw. Kudos to the guy who ran in full disco Elvis attire, including wig! And the sparkly disco dresses were fun and flirty. Every finisher got a medal--yeah! and of course special medals to the top finishers. There were bananas, water, gatorade and other snacks afterward--a lot more than what I've seen at other races. Everyone working the race were friendly and supportive. A really fun atmosphere. Glad I was in town to run the race!

As previous reviews have mentioned, this isn't really a "race", but more like running through a theme park in the sense that 1) there are different courselands/worlds 2) it's magical 3) it's crowded 4) they have funnel cake. My favorite worlds were the Electro Rainforest (You can stand under my um-brella-ella-ella) and Under the Sea (Life is the bubbles!). What was nice was that the price we paid ($50 with Groupon and Groupon discount code; no, that wasn't the nice part) came with a VIP glow pack that included a T-shirt, LED sunglasses, an LED wristband, jelly rings, and foam batons, so we were all glowed up and ready to go then and there. Of course, you can always purchase more glow stuff ahead of time and go even more crazy with it. There was also a DJ at the start line hyping us up for the run, EDM music playing throughout the run, and an after-party! I was glad there were food vendors and drinks afterwards in case we needed some sustenance. I would totally be down for doing this again, but ideally at a more affordable price.

I'm sure there was a disclaimer about this but no one will care how fast or how slow your 5k time is. Parking is bad but not horrible (just takes forever getting into the lot but finding a spot shouldn't be too bad). Overall, it's a really fun social event to come with friends, but if you're interested in racing and improving your 5k time, or even practicing for a marathon, this is not the run.

Not only is there the Independence Day Parade…read moreand the Art in the Park, not only is there the annual Rough Water Swim and the Concert in the Park, and not only is there the Adrian Empire Demo (2015 schedule) and fireworks, but there is the Crown City Classic 12K/5K! And since so much is going on, there are many flocking to Coronado Beach for the day's festivities. Arriving early--and I mean early--is well-advised. The Crown City Classic emails possible parking locations; but, again, it'll be busy. We arrived before 6am to pick-up our bibs and shirts, but it still wasn't early enough to get free parking. It had already been claimed. However, The Marriott's parking lot was available. Of course, there was a fee ($11 for the first two hours), but that's life. Besides, parking at The Marriott placed runners directly next to the race's start and finish. Next time, we're bringing our bikes, parking a bit further away if need be, and riding in. There are plenty of places to lock up bikes, and many runners had thought the same thing. I have to say that the best part of the race, the most creative addition, was the start: we all ran underneath Old Glory, majestically flowing above our heads within hands' reach. It really was a nice touch to begin this classic run. Coupled with running through the Coronado Naval Base, runners' patriotism flourished. Red, white, and blue proudly wound around this course, as spectators encouraged everyone to keep it up! It's a great way to kick off the 4th of July festivities. Of course, the route bottlenecks here and there at first; however, it eventually thins out. But this race, it's all in fun. And the themed shirts and the medals--you know I love running for super cool medals--made this celebration complete. =]

As a 5k, and as a something fun to do on Fourth of July if you're on the island, this race was…read moregreat! :) I had been wanting to sign up for a 5k for Fourth of July and it was great that this was on Coronado because it's where I spend the day. I checked out the details and map on the website, which was easy to navigate and made it looks even more fun. If you want to sign up, save yourself some money by signing up early, and looking for discounts for the race (I actually got 15% off just by searching 'Crown City Classic Discount' on google). It came to around $35 I think. The race has two days to pick up packets. 2016 was at roadrunner sports in Kearny Mesa 2 days before the race, and on Coronado one day before the race. I wasn't able to pick them up at either one so I had to get it at the actual event. I actually found a good parking spot, and that's considering I got there a little later than I wanted (I got there at 6:30) but I'm sure even getting there 10-15 minutes more, finding parking would have been almost impossible, so make sure you get there early. The event was really well organized and made finding everything easy. From packet/shirt pick up, to the start and finish line. They had a DJ and a guy warming people up before the race started. The race starts in waves, and by class. First ones to go are the 12k (7.4 miles as patriotically explained). If you're running for the win/time, they'll have you up at the front. If you're doing it for yourself or some other reason, they'll have you in the back. Second start was the 5k, with the same starting classes, and people walking in the back. There's also a kids half mile fun run, but I wasn't around for that so I'm not sure where they do it or how that goes. I'm sure it was good though. It gets crowded when you first take off, especially under the flag(which was VERY cool btw), but the chip on your number will get your exact time. The course was pretty linear and marked so you know where to go. It was an easy run as there weren't any extreme uphills or downhills, just a couple slopes here and there. However, when you're on the street, look up for the speed bumps! I almost tripped on one while I was running LOL! There were 2 water stations up and down the course for the 5k runners, and 4 for the 12k runners. Volunteers were great. Once you finish, they hand you your medal and have tables with water, banana's granola bars and some other snacks. Very cool of them to have that their! They also take your picture when you're coming in to the finish to post on the website for you to download later. So definitely be aware of that, people! :p Overall, it was such a fun race and unless I make plans to go somewhere else for 4th of July, I'll definitely be signing up for this one again. I have been a participant and supporter for several years now. I have a close friend who is a…read morebreast cancer survivor and an auntie and friends who were diagnosed with breast lumps. I love this event!!! You feel empowered when you're surrounded by so much positive energy and emotions. Lots of people dress the "pink" part and it's an unbelievable sight. It saddens me to see how many people have lost lives due to breast cancer, but participating encourages me to do more on my part to help! Lots of vendors attend and it's a great way to become educated and involved. It was awesome that so many businesses and organizations partake in an event that involves 15K people. This year we decided to run the race and we got pretty good timing. The last half mile was strenuous since there was a steep incline and participants were dropping off like flies!!! Such a great feeling after accomplishing a great run and helping a great cause!!!

(My 3rd Half) Sadly,…read moreSan Diego's Costume Party Run--famed for boasting the "World's Largest Half Marathon Medal"--had its final go-round this year. Look, I haven't been running that long. In fact, this run is only my third Half Marathon this year. (I have another eight on deck.) But after first seeing pictures of 2013's "Classic 45 Record" medal--also shouldering the "World's Largest" bravado--there was no doubt that I would be owning this Half. But it wasn't easy. This course is almost all Friars Rd.--about 10 miles of it--and although the hills aren't that steep, they're rolling. One after another after another after another... And just when I thought I was reaching a reprieve in Qualcomm Stadium's parking lot, more punishment: even the lot had hills! It was neverending! No, it wasn't an easy course (for me, at least.) It's not even scenic, really, but I was thrilled to have run it nonetheless. Because I knew that with every miserably hilly mile, I was one tired step closer to the prize. And this year's just-as-ridiculously-awesome, super-stunning "Gold Record Edition" medal--with a 6" diameter and a sparkling 3D Disco Ball--was worth the punishment! I am proud to having it hanging on my wall. So... The Costume Party Run has ended. But I think we're good: the Run's classy promoter--Superhero Events, LLC--they're not out of it. They've got clout. And I am sure that sometime very soon, some upcoming, action-packed and fun-filled running events will be revealed. My time: 2:41:57.2 Overall: 647/989 :)

Yah there were…read morepotholes on Friar's road and had to circle around the Qualcomm stadium parking lot like lost Ants harvesting for fall but did you see the gargantuan medal nestled between my voluptuous bosom??? It's the size of a cantaloupe!!! But it was great to see tons of people suffer the early July heat with me and share in that special moment of runners swass juice running down your leg. What a feeling! Anyways, I didn't care too much about the course or the heat because that medal, brought the material whore out of me!
