Last year, we worked with Keely Buchanan at Colorado Educational Consulting to find a school for our son. From grade school through middle school, he attended our local public schools, with an IEP to support him as he dealt with ADHD. He was struggling, despite the best efforts of everybody involved, and we needed a change before he started high school. Keely took time to review his educational history, to understand the areas where he struggled, and to get to know him as a person--she really "got" our son. She presented us with school options, with solid explanations of why each school might be a good fit, and equally good reasons why some of the other schools we were considering might not support his learning in the way we were hoping. Without her help, I'm sure we would still be floundering with the same issues we had before. Our son is now at a small, progressive school that we weren't even aware of before, though it's been in our area for nearly 50 years. I don't think we would have found it, much less realized why it would be such a great fit for the way he learns, without her help. After years of bribing, cajoling, and begging him to get out of bed to go to school at all, he now loves it. He's doing so well. The entire atmosphere in our house has changed. There's ease where there used to be tension, and we can actually enjoy each other's company at the dinner table instead of lecturing about homework, asking him why we got another email from a teacher, or trying to come up with yet another plan to help him get caught up. Our family just moved to Denver from abroad, and we are totally new to the school system here in the United States. I contacted Preparing for Denver Kindergarten, and not only were they able to accommodate my very tight schedule and give me a phone consultation the next day from when I reached out to them, Keely walked me through all the different options and scenarios, have clear and well argued recommendations, and also gave me further information and recommendations for our options down the line after Kindergarten. Our chat was about 20 minutes, and when I asked her how I could pay for the consultation, she promptly told me she would not be charging me for this despite my best efforts to offer to pay. Best thing my wife and I could have done to get prepared for figuring out our school choice options! Keely and Nicole do a great job of walking you through the process from their differing perspectives and making you feel comfortable that you know what to expect.
