Without going on too much about the retreat I was attending, the facilities were fantastic! The houses are set up with lots of bunks - there were four in our room, and five in the next room through to ours. Each bunk had it's own separate storage space and light. There were mattress pads and contour sheets on the beds, but you were responsible for bringing your own sleeping bag or sheet/blankets. There were also plenty of small group meeting areas. For large group meetings, the barn was great! The kitchen staff did a great job and were very accommodating with our food. There were several in our party with specific dietary requests, and I didn't hear any complaints about folks going hungry. If your group is looking for somewhere to hold a gathering/retreat/camp, I'd definitely recommend High Scope!

Lately you have to pay extra for this bread option. Note that in the past the pie came with the meal one night a week.. That ended some time ago and now you get a piece of sheet cake. Unfortunately, the expert pie crust does not extend to the homemade chicken pot pie. Marie Callender or Swanson's frozen chicken pot pie will be just as good for a lot less. Once I tasted the chicken pot pie, I decided to give Stockwell's a wide berth. At $10.50 I can do better a lot of places. However, on 6/19 I braked for a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. I was hungry, didn't feel like cooking and it sounded good. it did not include cranberry sauce, which is on my list of trimmings. Oh well. The gravy was so overly salted it ruined everything it touched - that means the mashed potatoes, the dressing, and the turkey. I mean REALLY over-salted. I salt my food, so I am not anti-salt. I'm not much of a cook, but had I turned out gravy like this, I would have tossed it in the trash and opened a can of store-bought gravy. There is no excuse for anyone serving anything this overly salted - much less a professional cook who is charging you good money. When I mentioned the salty gravy to a neighbor, she said she had heard others comment that Stockwell's over-salted their food. I called the next day and talked to an employee about the situation, asking for a partial refund or a no-charge replacement turkey-mashed potatoes-dressing-gravy the next time it was on the menu. The employee was sympathetic and took a message. I waited over 2 weeks to write this negative review, giving the owner lots of time to respond to my complaint and make it right. I like to support local businesses, but the businesses have to be worth supporting by delivering a good product or service. Anyone can make a mistake, but if you can't address the mistake.....

Things to do along I-75 N/S to and from the Detroit area (2 of 2)…read more I had to slow down the clock and spend a little time here. The real destination was Detroit. That said, I had coffee at one place, ate a meat loaf lunch at another, pawed the car windows and did some test sitting at a few dealerships, drove around the University of Toledo campus (which I didn't know is a very good school for STEM disciplines), and put the cherry on top of these few hours by visiting the Toledo Botanical Garden. I walked the garden and took photos. It was warm and humid, so I didn't really relax and sit a spell. Like many public gardens, the Toledo Botanical Garden, out toward the western end of the city, mixes up formal garden spaces with European cues and more organic spaces, meaning they are natural in affect and display very little rigid planning. I was fairly amazed how, as you moved along, these different vistas came into view. Everything was cohesively put together and you could enjoy the different environments they've curated for you. The Toledo Botanical Garden is part of the city metro park system, which I learned from other reviews. Thus, being under this umbrella might mean that the park is free of charge ... and it is! For this aspect and for delivering more than I had expected, having pulled it from a "top things to do" list, I believe the Toledo Botanical Garden handily earns 5 stars.
