Although it was winter and visibility driving here was limited, the journey to the museum was like stepping into a winter wonderland. Palate, the museum's in-house restaurant, provided delicious catering that added to the memorable experience. Overall, a breathtaking location with great amenities and charm. One of the historic aspects of this community, besides the hot springs, is Fort Yellowstone, first started in 1872 and taken over by the National Park Service in the early 1900s. The Horace M Albright visitor center should be your first stop. It used to be a bachelor's officers quarters, with room for six, and is not only a good source of information about Fort Yellowstone, it a small museum with info on the park, the animals in it, and the nearby Springs. The Park Rangers operating the desk are a font of information. There are monitors near the desk that provide details of the camp sites, traffic and nearby lodgings. It's hard to reconcile the modern day technology in a building over a 100 years old. Many of the original buildings that make up Fort Yellowstone are still standing and although occupied by employees of the park and the district and not available for a tour, it's still worth a walk to interesting walk. As you walk, you'll probably also see a herd of resident elk, sometimes walking and sometimes sitting. (They aren't tame, though, and the signs at the visitor center warn you not to approach them.) On your way to the Springs and the hiking path around them, take a few extra moments and learn about the pre-park history.

A special shout out though for the staff member at the counter who was phenomenal in his advice for things to do (and not do) in Jackson Hold, Grand Teton, and Yellowstone -- some of which were hidden treasures that seemed to have been customized to the interests of the specific visitors. (Sorry, we forgot his name but he has been living in the Jackson Hole area for about 7 years, originally from Wisconsin). For instance, he suggested areas where we might find wildlife, and we did indeed see pronghorn antelopes, elk, and herds of bison. And, at his advice, we took Lake Butte Road up to an overview to get a stunning view of Lake Yellowstone in late afternoon. While there, everyone atop was abuzz with the news that traffic was currently delayed by rangers a few miles ahead to allow a grizzly bear to cross the road. (We did see the bear but it but were too far away for a photo).

I like where the place is located and how it's close to some historical sites that you can just walk to if you're up for a brief trail walk. As gorgeous as this place looks, I found it to be a one-and-done sort of experience. It's not a place I would go out of the way to visit again, but it was nice to experience. There are other centers where I feel like there's enough content or service where I want to come back and visit again.

The National Elk Refuge in Jackson, WY is a truly special place. It's amazing to see such a large…read morewildlife refuge preserved right next to a town and know that places like this still exist. It's a reminder of the importance of protecting these spaces so future generations can enjoy them. A must-visit when in Jackson Hole. Beautiful, peaceful, and a great example of wildlife conservation done right.

We did not see elk during our June visit. They're at the refuge from mid-December through early April when they begin migrating. They move toward their summer ranges, following the receding snow line up to higher elevations in Grand Teton National Park & the Bridger Teton National Forest. From October through December, deepening snow cause the elk to seek food and shelter at these lower elevations in Jackson Hole.

They offer military and other discounts on their entrance fee The gift shop area includes information on local, current mining operations as well as merch. This is an outdoor museum so dress for the weather. If you want to take the under ground tour be sure you are wearing closed toed shoes. (Crocs not included, I don't know why) They also have above ground tours. Part of the property is set up like a western town. Something that would grow up around a mine. Post office, apothecary, carpenter, blacksmith, etc, etc. All these buildings are set up with window displays but most are not open to the public. You just peer thru the windows. There is a memorial garden to miners. A mine yard with pieces of heavy equipment. The motorized lift, miners locker room, light room, information and equipment used in dry and wet boring, 3D representations of mines and more with information posted on the displays. You can walk up into the mine head if you are so inclined to see how the ore chutes operated. We spent about two hours here without realizing it. Very interesting museum. Staff are very personable, answered questions and suggested reading material for more on the subject. Very good, family friendly stop.
