We chose Columbia Fence to do the remaining 5 sides of our yard (neighbors had already replaced the remaining side). Our initial experience was great. The estimate process was relatively simple and the estimate was close-ish to the others we received. We decided to go with them because of the reputation of their work (they did my parents' fence) and that they did a lot of work in my city of residence. After putting down our deposit, our experience went downhill fast. We were quoted 8-10 weeks out for our install. When we called them for an update, our calls were not returned. Once when we were called, we were told that "you know there's a lumber shortage, right?" How would we know? We hired you to do our fence and at that point stopped looking around and talking to other companies. We were promised a call back from the owner (he's the only one that does scheduling) and it never happened. Never. It ended up being about 14 weeks. The crew that did the install was nice. The lead guy, Pete, was very personable. The crew worked fast with taking down the existing chain link and gate and setting new poles. However, they left all of these used materials on our front lawn. Not on the side of the house, where they would be inconspicuous, but legitimately in the middle of the front yard which, had we not moved all of it, would have killed half the grass. When we called to inquire, we were told "they take it when they're done. Didn't they tell you that?" I'm pleased with the finished product of our fence. It's beautiful and provides all the privacy we were wanting. However, the customer experience and communication was absolutely deplorable. If you don't mind a blatant lack of communication, then I'd say hire them. If you expect answers to your questions and a customer-focused experience, then I'd recommend you keep looking. read more

Had a fence done 12 years ago same owner- and it was great! Had the remainder of our yard fenced in recently (10/25) and the products used and install is significantly inferior to our previous experience. Tons of warped boards - which we had to pay to replace, just the boards because they had no time to remove and reinstall plus they would've charged us as well. PLEASE READ CONTRACT BECAUSE IT STATES THINGS DIFFERENTLY THAN WHAT THEY TELL YOU WHEN THEY ARE TRYING TO SELL THE JOB AND COLLECT THE DEPOSIT. The hinges and hardware are cheap and have pealed in less than a year. The gates and hinge placement is pitiful. The lag bolts for hinges weren't predrilled and screwed in at major angles- we will have to replace in near future. Should've listened to my husband and had them dig and place posts and done all the work ourselves. I have recommended this company to neighbors and friends in the past. Based on this most recent experience can no longer do that with confidence. We try to support local business but when companies no longer care about quality or craftsmanship ....such a shame. They make no attempt to make it right.....sad. read more

I did not get a fence done by Columbia fence. i live next to the person that did. This company is sloppy in cleaning up their shot!!!! They threw multiple tie wires over the fence in an area of cut grass and a pile of dirt. I hit the wires with my mower and it wrapped in the blades. Stoped the engine immediately. Thanks assholes. They also forgot to install another gate until I noticed (hilarious) and their drawing had the gate on it. We worked it out but owner was swearing at me over phone and says "we will not install new posts". Fence was installed but gate latches needed adjusted after 1st week....no big deal but it has been 5 MONTHS and they have not come to fix it which is covered under warranty. Medina is on their map for selling fences and collecting a check but seems too far to fix something under warranty. Very unprofessional owner; he never apologized, blamed me and his crew leader even though he filled out the paper and drew dimensions, and lost his marbles on phone. Be sure your contract is accurate and signed BEFORE any work begins. People are so excited to get a new fence that we look past these things. I regret wasting my money. During the installation process I went out 3 times to ask if certain problems that I saw where correct and I was told "I've been doing this for 13yr." Went out a 4th time and said I just saw what I believe to be issues and want to bring it to your attention before the job is 50-75% done and it's to late. I do apologize for being a pain but, 10k for a fence is a lot of money. Well as their photos with the green line on the post shows there are several posts that aren't sunk 36 in. Plus they had to come back to lower several sections because I was NOT going to accept a 5-11 inch gap around the bottom of my entire yard. Now we all know that this has since made the top of the fence look off and since I paid extra for a anestheticly pleasing appearance of the scalloped top it is a eye sore. The posts are all different highest so I can't put lights on them. (Which I will now have to return) At first they wanted to back fill with dirt or put a board across the bottom. That is when I said if I wanted it to look 1/2 assed I would have saved my $10k and just fixed what I had. They came back a total of 4 times and I still regret wasting my money. I had high hopes because 3-5 of my neighbors had Columbia Fence install their shadow box privacy fence and it looks great. We choose Brian and his team at Columbia Fence to replace our board on board fence around our back yard. I did not expect to get this done in the winter, but due to the mild weather we've had, these guys were able to knock it out on time, under budget, and ahead of schedule. The office was always quick to return phone calls and they coordinated with the City so I didn't have to do a thing other than write the check. I called several contractors also mentioned here and none of them called me back. Brian, their owner, also had a nice recommendation for a metal fence over our retaining wall and the same for the main gate, which really came out nice. We had seen some bad reviews for this company but it seemed to be the same for all fence installers in our area. We decided on Columbia Fence because of a friend recommending them. We got our free estimate on May 1 and made our deposit on May 2. Updates weren't forthcoming but I did get answers when I got through to someone. It is now May 24 and our fence was installed today. The men were very friendly and worked hard and efficiently. They did stop to pet our Jake (the whole reason for the fence) for a couple of minutes which made us comfortable with them. Anyone who pays attention to Jake is good in our book. I am not attaching a photo only because it is a new yard and not much to look at. read more

The owner is the most unprofessional person I've had to deal with . He took my deposit then couldn't install it and the staff was too incompetent to know who to call and kept calling the wrong people, this was delayed for 5 months until I finally took it upon myself to make phone calls and did their job . Mind you they refused to refund the deposit even though they couldn't complete it . When I asked for a discount since it took so long and he didn't do their job he refused and became nasty threatening to take down my fence if I wrote a bad review . First off.. I want to start by saying some of the reviews on here are not at all what I experienced. It is obvious that most of the bad reviews are by people who did not get to experience Brian and his crew. Most of the reviews are about him not showing up for an estimate on time. For starters.. I would tell you that it is worth the wait. They installed over 300ft of fence, including around my garbage cans, and they did A+ quality work. The entire crew was extremely courteous and professional, and very attentive to what I wanted in a fence. I got to pick how every gate opened, and I got exactly what I wanted and more. Seriously an amazing experience! I had received a few quotes for wood privacy fences in my area, and Columbia fence blew the others away. I had a Red Cedar full privacy fence (about 300 sq ft) installed a couple weeks ago and could not be happier. From start to finish this family owned business knocked it out of the park. My first impression of the company was what really made me know I wanted to go with them. I worked with Brian's fiance over the phone to start, she was so friendly and nice. I was delighted to hear that they were able to do my fence project in a weeks time - that's from when I decided to move forward to complete installation. I couldn't even believe it. I had such a hard time getting a hold of the other companies, let alone getting them to set up the work. When I did talk to the one fence contractor and let them know I went with Columbia he had stated he worked with Brian and that I had made a great choice, which means a lot coming from a competitor! Brian came over twice to check out my property, they arranged all the permit items - which was a huge load off my shoulders because our building department is a pain to work with. Brian was super nice and friendly, he put up with my super jumpy dog and answered all my questions. The guys who installed the fence were also super friendly. They even hauled off all my down trees and whatnot that I had in my backyard for no extra cost. Another huge weight off my shoulders. My fence looks seriously AMAZING. They completed it over the course of three days - set the posts one, let dry one, and then came back to finish the project the next. I have received SO many compliments on it. It is truly beautiful. The red cedar smells so amazing in the morning and looks gorgeous, especially after a rain. I couldn't be happier with the entire experience and would recommend them a thousand times over. read more

After being ripped off of my deposit by another fence company, I set up three new estimates. All three company's came out and hands down Brian beat both other company's quotes by $200-$400. He told me 4-8 weeks but was there twice to meet within a week to discuss, and his crew started my fence within 3 weeks of my estimate. Brian gave me a second gate for free, was prompt at returning calls and texts (more than calls) and has touched in to make sure all was as expected. I will say this guy is busy, and doesn't have much free time during spring/summer/fall months but I'm extremely satisfied and happy with the fence we got and the manner of which the work that was completed. I feel confident that if I experience any issues he will address them timely. Columbia Fence was referred by 6 of our friends and out of those six only one friend was upset with the product they purchased, not the quality of work. Overall a great experience!! read more

When they finished, they're were half-driven nails sticking out everywhere along the fence and the fence only lasted a single season before half the posts heaved up out of the ground and the fence was leaning over about 30 degrees. Asked them to fix it and the attitude was "we've already got our money, why should we care about a quality product?" Fence post aren't incubus with each other set at different heights so the whole Fence looks wavy. Drilled a whole in my driveway for the lock bar that doesn't even line up. Lock bar its self was a piece of rebarb when asked they said we don't have one with them and would drop it off tomorrow and it's now month later haven't seen or heard from anyone and we will be filling in small claims. The work was sloppy and they cut down shrubs that they then realized they didn't need to cut to do the job. Then when a board broke on my fence and I called no one ever came out to even look at to let me know if it is under warranty or not a year later. If I could give a negative rating that is what they would be receiving. They left behind torn up landscaping, a filty stained from dirt and mud brand new fence that was purchased and an oil stain in the driveway from their equipment and truck. For several weeks after the job, they didn't take calls or return a call. When the owner finally called back, he basically said so what I'm not going to fix it and it wasn't us that left the oil stain in the drive -- even though it absolutely was. They wouldn't answer any questions I had before the install. Fence itself does not look like the one I ordered from the brochure they gave me. Took me 4+ hours to clean up all the extra dirt, rock, and concrete they had left around the poles and in the yard. He was on our property and said it was a dick move not allowing the neighbor to tie into our fence. He said he didn't need to ask permission and didn't need a permit to do the job. WOW what a mistake using this company. After the installation for which they did not call to tell me they were coming to install. They left numerous ruts in my yard. Concrete and gravel in the yard. Cigarette butts all over. I called. All I got from Brian was complaints about his employees. One of the posts for the gate has a hole in it. Said he ran out of posts and if they replace they would have to dig up. asked if he would accept this if it was his fence. More complaints about his crew. Said he would call me and take care of the hole in the fence. What a surprise, no call. The fence it self I am ok with but the install and the mess left for me to clean up was well below any acceptable level. This is the worst company i have ever delt with do to the fact that the owner of the company was nice at first but by the end of the job him and his crew were disrespectful to my wife, my uncle and me. The crew that he sent out to do the job did the job wrong. I called and informed of the problem the owner did not get back to me until the next day he shows up to look at the problem 45 mins before the time we set to meet and was disrespectful to my wife. The crew comes back to finish the job and fix the problem and again was disrespectful. Do not fix the spout that the owner said that they would fix after running over the lawn in the front yard. He then shows up to see how things are at 7:30 at night and to pick up the payment for the job that was not totally done. I informed him he was not getting paid until he fixed the front yard and lowered the gate like his crew said they would. He told me if i did not pay he would come back and rip the fence out and again i said he would get paid when the things he told us got done. Don't let the reputation fool you - Columbia Fence is not what it's rumored to be. The company promises to install top quality and professional fencing in the Lorain County area, when in all actuality they do the exact opposite. When I contacted Columbia Fence I spoke with the companies owner, Brian Lankiewicz he gave me pricing options and time frames that the work would need to be done. I had inquired into having a solid cedar fence installed and the cost was going to run me around $3,995. It was a bit more than Northeast Ohio Fence & Deck Co., but I was a local and figured I would go with the local name. Wrong decision. Turned into a total nightmare. The first thing that happened was the crew showed up almost 4 hours late, followed by the wrong color fence. So they had to re-order my material which took another week and a half, they came back again - this time on time and installed my fence. When I got my bill I was actually quoted at $3,995 but due to the improper fencing being ordered (which was their fault) and them expediting the shipping, they charged me an additional $545. I was livid. Called the company, left voicemails, zero response. Total scam. Also, not even a few weeks later I noticed down on the left corner part of the fence they installed of my property where several of the boards were cracked and looked as if they might just fall apart at any minute in one section. Not sure how it happened, but it surely wasn't from me. Wouldn't recommend this company. Oh and I can't forget this part. The one guy that came on the crew was a drug addict because he kept skipping off to the company truck every 15 minutes or so and would come out talking louder and crazier than hell with deep bags under his eyes. The issue came about when our neighbors had their fence installed (on our referral) by Columbia. When they finished their job they left a bunch of concrete from the old posts behind our woodpile. I have been trying for over a year now to come and get this and get the same response from their secretaries, which is they will give my number and address to Brian the owner and have someone come out and get it. It's frustrating because they also did our fence and have done jobs for several of our friends and families on our recommendation. I had filed a complaint with the BBB concerning this matter. Shortly after this they came out and removed the old concrete and I thought the issue was resolved until this morning when I got a voicemail from Brian the owner threatening to bring the concrete back out and dump it in my yard unless I removed the BBB complaint. The Lorain County Sheriffs office was called and a deputy listened to the recording and asked if I wanted to file a criminal complaint which I declined. We had our fence done by them and about 5 people who I referred also got their fence done by them. My neighbors hired this company to build a fence on our property line. They did a good job of constructing the fence, and completed in a timely fashion. However since we weren't the clients who hired them, they seemed to show us no respect. In fact they took advantage and use of our yard. Only to gain access to construction from both sides. Tire ruts and dirt was left everywhere. The mess was not cleaned up completely. The team of workers were polite, but the Manager/ Supervisor was rude. In an attempt to fix the problem, the Manager/ Supervisor said he would send guys out to fill the ruts and plant grass. No one ever showed up and that was over a month ago..... :( Our family has since had to plant new landscape just to cover up their mess! read more

How absurd . I paid $5400 to install a fence and something breaks they wont even come and look at it. They'll tell you to take a picture and and send it to them. Poor customer service in my opinion.
