What I found was a strange split: half the staff were pure day-angels -- genuinely caring and patient -- while the other half felt like night creatures of Hades, treating suffering people like problems instead of patients. I remember lying there, unsure whether I'd get help or indifference when I pressed the call button. Those nights were long and unsettling, and they left a deep mark on how I view hospitals even now. After I was discharged, things didn't end there. A few months later, when my Medicaid coverage ended and my Medicare was about to begin, the hospital's billing department started calling me. I remember the woman on the phone saying, "The hospital expects to get paid." I was still in recovery -- mentally, physically, emotionally -- and that moment felt like being punched when I was already down. I told her to figure it out and ended the call. I never heard from them again. But the experience stuck with me. Even now, when I walk into a clinic or hear a hospital intercom, it all comes back: the helplessness, the fear, the sense that care had become secondary to profit. It wasn't just a bad stay; it was something that shook my trust in healthcare as a system. I still wish there were some way to hold them accountable for how they treat patients -- and to be clear, the word "wish" here expresses my frustration and lasting pain, not a legal or factual claim. Recovery room with first operation on aug 5 the male nurse in recovery saved his life by calling in the surgical team who then rushed him back into surgery. That was around 1 1:30 am. When this male nurse alerted another she just assured him all was okay meanwhile he needed multiple transfusions and another surgery to repair an artery thank you to the male nurse for going beyond to assure a patients safety. He should be strongly rewarded for acting quickly and ignoring another who clearly was not sharp enough.

I had knee surgery at Columbia Orthopaedics for a torn meniscus. This was my third knee surgery,…read morethe second one on the same knee after a similar meniscus tear was repaired a few years back at the Hospital for Special Surgery, and the first one at Columbia. The surgeon was Dr. Ohannes Nercessian. The meniscectomy surgery went fine, as far as the doctors could tell, but it is during rehab that problems started. The knee was very swollen and had to be drained 3 times, which is unusual[1]. The reason for the swelling was unclear, but labs ruled out a possible infection. When I started rehab at Columbia, the questionnaire I filled in on my first visit asked what I was hoping to achieve at the end of rehab. My answer was "I want to be able to run again". I never achieved that. The Department of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine/Harkness Physical Therapy at Columbia deserves a few lines, since the place is a disgrace: there are no changing rooms, and patients have to get changed either in the bathroom or in the door-less cubicles where doctors see patients. The gym itself, which has no windows, is equipped with machines that are likely 30+ years old. I did two sets of rehab here, separated by several months, for a total of 14 sessions,and the only saving grace of this place was Brian Gugliuzza, the therapist who worked with me for my rehab. He was absolutely phenomenal: engaging, enthusiastic, energetic, knowledgeable. Quite frankly his talent is just wasted here. Recovery time from this type of operation varies a lot, but it is usually in the 2-8 weeks range, after which patients are generally able to return to a normal physical activity. In fact, a meniscus tear is a very frequent sports injury, and most athletes are able to resume competitive activity successfully after meniscectomy. For a similar operation a few years before at my other knee I fully recovered in about 6 weeks, and was able to run and play squash regularly and at the same intensity level as before. In this case, a few years have passed after surgery, and I am still unable to run for more than just a sprint. After a couple of years with no progress and no clear indication of what was going on, I just stopped seeing the doctor. Unfortunately Columbia does not provide any information about how well patients of a certain doctor recover after surgery[2]. Nor allows a patient to see a different doctor at the same hospital to ask for a second opinion. An MRI performed about a year after surgery proved inconclusive. In fact, it seems that after a meniscectomy it becomes difficult to discriminate whether the remaining part of the cartilage suffered a new tear. Also, after sending a release form to the records office in order to receive a copy of my MRI report, I was faxed back the medical record of another patient. I mean, does my name sound like Raisa Cabrera...? In the end I am certainly better after the surgery than before, but would you go back to the same doctor if something went wrong, you never fully recovered, and the doctor was unable to figure out what went wrong? Neither would I. ------------------- [1] The swelling is not unusual; it's unusual for the knee to keep swelling after it has been drained if you don't do any intense physical activity. [2] Which is nonsense. It's like hiring somebody without knowing how good they are at what they do because their performance records are not available to the public.

I can't wait to see what the rest of the hospital looks like once the entire renovation is complete. The nurses are great too. We visited for a couple of hours, and every 10-15 minutes they were coming in to check on my sister-in-law. My nephew is also being taken care of in the NICU, and overall, everyone has been very attentive and caring. One thing to keep in mind is parking. There isn't much local parking available, so I ended up using the SpotHero app to find and reserve parking nearby, which made things much easier. Overall, it's a great hospital, and honestly, I wish this was my local hospital! Hehe

The doctors here and the residents were professional and knew what to do. We felt we were in good hands. Post delivery I was transferred to the 6th floor for the postpartum recovery. We got a single room thankfully but the rooms were much smaller than what I would've liked. But hubby was able to sleep on the pull out couch and had a private bathroom with stand up shower. The rooms were cleaned daily. The meals were sporadic. Some of the meal the nutrition attendant was rude and did not give an extra meal to hubby but many of them gave extras, especially for dinner my hubby was able to get a fully hot meal in addition to mine. The 6th floor kitchen, hubby found to be messy. There was no coffee maker, no hot water and fridge was dirty. Sometimes they would have salads and sandwiches there on the counter for visitors but hubby thought it did not look good. The nurses and lactation consultants were all so helpful. We learned so much in how to care for our newborn. Hubby loved the direct coaching received on feeding, changing, burping. And I received excellent guidance on lactation which put me on the right foot. Highly recommend this hospital for any birth and delivery!
