OMG what a great time!!! We came here after having dinner at Jasmine upstairs. We were only able to book for an hour slot and that time flew by. They show you how to throw the axes and they have score boards for if you want to get a little competitive. I wish we were able to stay longer than an hour, it was addicting! I understand that there are many five star reviews for this place, but my husband and I both agree that our experience tonight was far from five stars. Pros: - Although I was completely awful, the games that the "axeperts" had us play were pretty fun! - Our "axepert" (Rachel "Flash") was pretty nice. She voluntarily took pics of my husband and I so that we had pics of our experience. She was also encouraging whenever someone was struggling or seemed discouraged. Cons: - The bar staff. Oh my goodness. Within the two hours that we were there, we had three different bartenders. None of them knew a thing about drinks either! There is no drink menu so you would think that the bartenders would be pretty educated on what they have to offer. Two of the bartenders had no clue about any of the beers/ciders that were available. The second bartender served me my bottled beer without even opening the bottle. Thankfully, the person sitting next to us had a bottle opener on his keychain as the bottle could not be opened without a bottle opener. - There is an extremely LOUD and OBNOXIOUS noise opposite the bar (behind you when sitting at the bar). You can barely hear the bar music the noise is that loud. We asked the second bartender about the noise and she said that it's been present since the place opened up in August? My husband thinks that it's from cable or wiring. It was seriously the most annoying thing to listen to while we were trying to enjoy our appetizers and drinks at the bar. - Although this was a date night for us, we didn't mind that we were being paired with others to have a much more enjoyable experience. However, the fact that we were paired with a group of ten others that were all in one group already (team outing), made us feel like we were a "third" wheel. It was not fun nor a great experience for us. If you're going to pair a couple with more people to have a greater experience, pair them with other couples or other small groups. Not ten people that are already part of one group. Again, it was awkward not only for us, but for that team as well. - Also, although the reservation email states to arrive early and to make sure you're on time for your reservation, this means nothing...especially when you're paired with complete strangers who are not on time. Our reservation was for 6 PM. At about 6:10 PM, we asked the front desk staff why we were still waiting. We were advised that we had to wait for everyone in the entire group to arrive. Although we didn't ask to be paired with these other group members, we ultimately had to pay the price of waiting on them before beginning our experience. This was definitely not worth the $75 that this experience cost. Finally checked out this facility and loved it. It really gets all your stress out taking axe throwing. Alex helped us learn how to throw the axe two handed and then one handed. Once we were well trained we did close to an hour of throwing axes. It took a few tries for me until I got that bullseye picture. My husband mastered it quite easily. You really need good hand eye coordination to get it in the target area. Ok, this was such a fun time, you guys! When my friend suggested we do this for her birthday outing, I was totally stoked! Columbus Axe Throwing is located in the Sports Center, towards the back of the Continent. Getting there was tricky one you turned off of Busch Blvd., so I was thankful I had the map they'd attached to my confirmation email. Once inside the building, you go past the concession area and customer service desk, and Axe throwing is down the hall though a door on your left. Reservations are required, and there are Groupons available to save a few bucks. Our reservation was from 6p -730p. Rex was our "axe-pert", and he was so much fun, and gave great "axe-planations" of the rules and instructions. The night went down like this: Each of us had to come up with an "axe" themed name, and write it on our name tag. I chose the name Axelina. :) We had a large group of 13. Each of us were given the opportunity to get used to throwing. This was a first time for a lot of us, and the suspense of knowing if I was good or bad was killing me! After several practice throws for everyone, we played our first game called "Timber". Played like the basketball game "Horse", it was so much fun. I actually won a trophy for scoring the highest point for my team! The 2nd game we played was called "50". The race is on to deduct as many points from your 50. The first team to get to zero wins. The 3rd game was Tic Tac Toe, and you had team X and team O, and well you get the drift. Finally it came time to determine who the Lumberlord of the evening was going to be, so then there was an elimination round, where you individually challenge or be challenged! The Lumberloard is the last man (or woman) standing! Their prize is a HUGE stamp/temporary tattoo that says, "LUMBERLORD" to wear around for bragging rights for the rest of the night. An excellent adventure! This was well worth trying and I can't wait to go back again soon. My wife and I did the instructor led class where they teach you how to throw and axe. We were in a small group worth two other couples and had the place to ourselves. The emails that they send are overly exaggerated on the "get here early so you are not late". We used Waze and it took us right to the front door. From there it was a few feet from the front door to the area we needed to be. Needless to say we got there about 20 min early. We filled out a waver and headed over to the lane with the other two couples. We were taught how to throw two handed as well as one handed. We received plenty of practice and then we started up the competition rounds. The evening was exciting, heart pounding and very fun. Entering the building was kind of sketchy and the floor as you enter to the right side is dingy and not visually appealing. Aside from that, we had a great time here and I think Anthony was our Axe throwing expert. He was great and everyone had a great time even though we had a huge group. I did notice the markers that we had to write our names tags with should be permanent markers, because the erase markers we used smears on the name tags. The axes we used should be sharpened because I noticed when people stuck it, we all enjoyed ourselves. That will keep us coming back! Went today with a group of about 14 other people to celebrate a birthday. I had been here before, but before they were settled into their renovated space. I had a blast before, but the space was subpar. This time around, it was a perfect experience. The instructor was lively, and interacted well with us. My roommate purchased a Groupon and asked me to join on a Saturday. Who doesn't want to go axe throwing!? I love trying new things and I honestly had no idea that it was even a sport or what to even expect. They're actually having an Axe throwing tournament at the Arnold Classic. Say what!? This is a serious sport in Canada. We arrived and were happily greeted by Sam. We were a group of two split up in a larger group of about 12...6 on each team. We learned how to throw the axe then practiced. The guides had a lot of engaging games to keep it competitive and fun. Throwing an axe at a large piece of wood and getting it to stick is not as easy as it looks! The venue is cute with good vibes. It was pretty cold though. I don't think the building is temperature regulated. The only thing is it's in a soccer complex in not a very populated spot. So random. It would be awesome if this place was downtown. Is this fun? Is it difficult? Can you do it? Should you do it? Is it dangerous? 1. Yes. It's very fun, (coming from the #1 of 12 people who was honestly the least excited about "throwing an axe" it axe-ually is fun. I don't even know why I was not interested, but I take it all back!). 2. It is not hard at all, they will tell you how to do it, no experience required. 3. Yes, you CAN do it- anyone can do it, your height, weight, and favorite flavor skittle do not matter. 4. YES, you should do it, for the above 3 reasons. 5. It is not dangerous, it's a safe activity, but obviously you need to listen (more below) Want more details? For starters, there is a ton of info on their website if you don't believe me and want the official nitty gritty. Also, we got our tickets on groupon, save a few bucks for dinner or to tip your instructor! Here's the run down... Get there on time. If you're scheduled at 5pm, get there at 4:50-4:55pm, and not in the parking lot, not at the snack stand, like plan to be standing in front of the axe target/"cage" 5-10mins early. You're going to a multi-use indoor sports facility, so it's pretty large and could be pretty busy. From the main entrance, the axe throwing is a 4-5 min walk. Okay, so you get there, walk back, check-in with someone upfront (they should have an ipad, and/or a black and white shirt), find your isle/axe "cage" you'll know what I mean when you see it. Then you meet your Axe-pert aka expert, but they specialize in axes, get it? I did not make this up, this is literally what they are called. Next: Everyone has to sign a waiver on an ipad, pick a bad-axe name, this can obviously take time, as everyone wants a sweet name, think ahead! (Axe puns are obviously axe-cceptable). You'll write your names on a name tag, and on a chalk board. THEN...the instructions. There's few instructions, but there's 1 axpert assigned per lane, so my number #1 piece of advice to get the most fun for your money, is to LISTEN. Try as hard as you can to focus and listen to the very few rules. It's a bit loud and the axpert has to speak up as is, so be respectful, get the rules down and then have a blast. You also need to be tentative because you switch throwers pretty quickly, so if you don't want to slow it down you need to know who is on deck/up next! I feel like someone's parent, but do you understand why it's important to be on time? Their time is your time, which is your money, which in turn is their money. Makes sense to me! *It is customary to give the axepert a tip for their service. We each gave a few bucks. Everyone's doing it, so you should too...* If you're still reading you must be axe-specially interested.......I'm going to give a few more non-vital details. -Everyone will get individually shown how to throw and then have the chance to practice. -We went with a group of 12 which was great because we had two lanes next to each other. Each lane holds 6 people. I assume if it's busy and there's lots of small groups you'll just be playing with axe-tra new friends (PSA: I think I'm done with the axe puns) -We played 3 games. These could vary, but the 3 we played are detialed below. Winners also got prizes, which also may vary.... (For each game and each turn a player throws twice. As you cycle through the players, you will probably throw a few times each game.) 1st: TIMBER: it's like HORSE or PIG with basketball. Two people throw against each other, the person who gets the axe to stick into the wood wins the match, the losing team gets a letter T, as each side plays and a person loses, you spell out T-I-M-B-E-R. 2nd: Tic-tac-toe: This is similar to darts, in that the board has numbers and you have to hit those numbers with the axe for them to get marked. Both teams play on one board, so as a number is hit, that corresponding team gets a mark on the tic-tac-toe board. 3rd: Survivor- this is an individual player game, meaning teams are nonexistent, everyone gets 2 lives. You throw matched up to someone and the person who gets the highest score of their 2 throws stays alive, the lower score loses a life. This is essentially eliminating players to find the best axe thrower of the group aka The Lumber Lord. There is a large ink stamp which brands said Lord of Lumber at the end. Obviously, everyone wants to be the champ...good luck! LASTLY. We thought that it was BYOB, if you read the site, you'll see that this is false. Do not bring your own alcohol. After you get settled in, or on your way in (if you have time) you can get food and drinks from the concession stand. They have pitchers of beer, at least that's what we had. Drinking not required for fun, in case you're nervous or something... That's a wrap, Columbus Axe Throwing is a fun, out of the ordinary activity. I bought a Groupon for axe throwing for my dad and I to try out and it was so fun! I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, but was excited to try something new. We checked in with a lovely woman who seemed excited to be at her job! After making name tags with fun axe throwing-themed names, the activities began. The Groupon we got was for a "group session," so Sam, our boisterous, experienced, funny coordinator, split all of us (about 14 total) into two teams and explained that there would be different games and competitions throughout the session. First, each person got to learn the basics of axe throwing, the correct form, and proper technique. Sam was a very good instructor and offered a lot of helpful tips. Then, we moved into the competition round which included 4 axe-throwing games. Unless you book the whole session, you will be throwing with a bunch of random people and have to rotate turns in the throwing cage. We happened to have a fun group, but I can imagine this being annoying with the wrong people. Sam walked us through the games, all the while sprinkling in funny commentary that really riled us all up and made it more fun. There was music playing, and by the end, a real competitive spirit was in the air. Now, if you just want to throw axes and hone your skills, this is not for you. We each got to throw the axe twice, then the people would switch out before you got to throw again. Much of this event was standing and watching other people throw, which is why the element of competition was so important. That being said, I wasn't ever bored. When my friend axed me to go axe throwing, I was taken abaxed. I tend to throw shade, not implements of death but I tagged along anyway and boy was I glad I did. It was so much fun! Our axe maxter Ricco set a fun and professional tone, guiding us toward maxemum performance and victory. We were put with a group of people who all had that, "What the hellur have I gotten myself into?" look, but everyone was super chill, and down to have a great time hauling back and hitting targets. Some recommends for axetra fun and social media jealousy, take at least three people so someone can always be videoing or snapping photos. Slow motion videos are the most epic but a cool boomerang video works too. I purchased an axe throwing groupon for my brother in law's birthday - we had a group of 4. The axe throwing area is located inside a larger recreation facility with indoor soccer fields and some other things? i'm not sure - it was largely empty when we arrived on a Sunday afternoon. We ended up being split up into two groups so we weren't all together, but it was still fun. After a demonstration and instructions, we played several different competitive games that were led and supervised by Paul. This is a great way to spend a couple of hours with some friends or even as a date night. They start with a short lesson on axe throwing and then you get to practice for a bit before playing some games with your group. Our lumberjack, Sam, was great and a lot of fun. Noah was our instructor, and did a terrific job teaching pointers to those of us (pretty much most of us) who had no prior experience hurling axes around in our backyards.
