I was also surprised how much I liked the hot pineapple they offered. Deserts were extra. My server said they had chocolate cake but what I got was a different consistency than cake I was expecting, it was still very delicious. They opened at 7pm on a Tuesday.

It's rotisserie chicken doused with a spicy hot sauce so what's not to like? I knew it was a Portuguese-originated dish, so I looked for a place famous for it. Here on a Sunday evening, there was quite a queue extending up the cobblestone alley, so I realized this must be the place. Although it was at least thirty people deep, it didn't take more than twenty minutes for Jamie W and me to secure a table upstairs. It was a homestyle dining room set-up that hovered between cozy and crowded depending on the fluctuating volume level. Interestingly all the servers were male, and while ours was the most junior, he consciously followed the behavior of his veteran brethren. There was no question about our main course, the 13,5€ Frango Assado No Espeto (Roast Chicken on the Spit) (Photo 7). It was tender and succulent enough albeit a bit under seasoned, all the more reason to pour a liberal dose of the piri piri sauce (Photo 8). Our sides were simple but shareable, the 3,2€ Batata Fritta (French Fries) (Photo 9) and the 4,3€ Salada Mista (Mixed Salad) (Photo 10). Both were fine, though we really wanted to try their Cream Spinach. They were already out of it in the kitchen. We were quite satisfied nonetheless, and their service pretty much worked like clockwork. Jamie and I agreed we'd definitely come back if the passion for poultry strikes us on a return trip to Lisbon. The tomato bruschetta was flavorful, the steak was incredible and melted in my mouth, and I even ordered dessert, which was, of course, delicious. This bistro is located in Alfama, and it's fairly easy to get to - it's on a tram line, close to a lookout point on the southeast side. It is a bit pricey as compared to the other restaurants (I believe the steak was around 15 euros), but the quality more than makes up for it.

Naturally, as we were early, there were not many other patrons in the restaurant. So the service was quick, and we were brought a plethora of meats in a short time, as expected. Encouraged by the volume of meats we were receiving, we limited our trips to the buffet (so as to not use up valuable real estate). A few times we were missed on the meat rotation, however to remedy this grave error, we were each brought four generous slices of picanha (but no seconds.) As the meal continued, service started to slow down and the restaurant got progressively more crowded. We felt as though we were being encouraged to stop eating. However, we continued requesting more meats until we were rudely CUT OFF by the lead server, while other tables around us (who had been there as long) continued to receive their meats as promised. Meanwhile, we had to practically BEG for the grilled abacaxi (grilled pineapple with cinnamon, a critical way to end the meal). In all of our experience consuming meats (both at churasquerias and other establishments more broadly) we have never been cut off when promised an "all-you-can eat" deal. If the all-you-can-eat was limited to one hour, this should have been clearly specified, and perhaps we would have dined elsewhere.

For a anyone who doesn't know how a churasqueira works, you basically pay a set price for all-you-can-east meat brought to the table on a selection of skewers and carved on to you plate until you say stop! There are usually many different cuts of beef as well as some lamb, pork, and chicken dishes. The meat here was ok, but nothing exceptional. The buffet at most Brazilian restaurants is normally so amazing that it competes with the meet to fill your belly. Think sushi, cheeses, charcuterie, fish and lots of exciting salad dishes. At this restaurant, not only was 70% of the buffet space empty, what was there was totally pathetically - limp lettuce, and bowl of uncut and undressed cherry tomatoes, and a few unidentified fried objects that I really didn't want to touch. We also ordered the additional seafood sharing plate for two and when this turned up it looked pretty impressive. Unfortunately, the prawns were old and tough, the muscles looked like they had been hanging around too long, and the crab sticks (from the 1980's?!) were just unappetising. The only decent part was the seafood dip in the middle. One of our waiters was so lazy, he didn't change the plates or bring new cutlery when required and was slow with the drinks orders. On top of this, he was quite rude and unfriendly. The only saving grace for this place was our meat waiter who was not only super fast at bringing around the meat dishes, he was really friendly and entertaining, and actually made an enjoyable evening out of mediocre food. The house vino verde was also good and I did leave feeling pretty stuffed so not all was lost. If you are visiting this area of town, I would recommend avoiding this tourist trap and searching out something far more local and authentic.
