Legit shish kebab!! (It's supposed to be on skewers, but you know... I gotta work with what I have Lol)

This market has the best meat you can buy to bbq, hands down! Their kubideh, lule meat is amazing, their kebab meat is amazing, and they are some of the nicest people you'll ever deal with. I've purchased meat from other markets and Im yet to find one that has meat as fresh and that tastes as good as it does here. I don't know much about the rest of the market, but their butcher dept is awesome!!

The owner was an absolute delight--chatty, warm, and sweet, and he honestly reminded me of Belle's father from Beauty and the Beast! He made us feel so welcome and even brought us a sample of his homemade tomato basil soup, which was delicious and tasted truly homemade. The turkey and avocado sandwich is apparently a favorite, as is the pastrami. I'm a vegetarian, so I ordered the avocado and cheese, which was fresh, simple, and satisfying. What really makes Berge's special, though, is the atmosphere. It has that cozy, old-fashioned neighborhood feel where you can settle in, have a good sandwich, and actually chat with the person behind the counter. Such a sweet little La Cañada institution. We'll definitely be back!

John seemed to know every customer who walked through the door, and he immediately made me feel welcome. He offered me a sample of the tomato soup, which was light, fresh, and absolutely delicious, and took the time to explain the menu. While I was looking everything over, he smiled and said, "You skipped lunch, didn't you?" I was shocked because he was right! Somehow he just knew. I ordered the pastrami sandwich, a cup of the tomato soup, and something I never do a Grape Crush. It just felt like the kind of place where you have a classic soda with your meal. Everything was wonderful, but what really stood out was how comfortable and cared for I felt. It wasn't just a meal; it was an experience that left me feeling genuinely nourished. If you're looking for great food, warm hospitality, and a place with nostalgic, feel-good vibes, I highly recommend stopping by.

It is extremely clean and does not smell like a typical meat counter. The selection of smoked and cured meats as well as sausages is impressive. I used to go to Alpine Village before it closed, and this shop provides similar German style products. The service is great. They answer your questions and provide great recommendations. My favorite hands down is the butter cheese which is packed in the refrigerated case, sliced and ready to go. That cheese with pumpernickel bread (which they also offer) is so comforting. There are multiple types of salami, with the German style being my favorite. I really enjoyed the imported caraway crackers which was a lighter alternative to the more solid breads. And I was pleased to get to experience Schreiner's for a good 14 or so years up until now. But my visit yesterday with my son was the soul crushing final visit. Schreiner's has a new staff of younger people, many of whom exhibit an unfortunate lack of hospitality, and for an establishment that serves sandwiches and deli meats, if kindness and gratitude for your loyal guests is not enough for you to manage from your position with such a once great establishment, then you my young friends are without a doubt not cut out to be in the food service industry. I give Schreiner's a few years before they are shut down if this new staff has any say.

So instead of having white tuna it's now light tuna instead of being flaky and wonderful it's now a pace that comes out of a tube it feels like there's no onions chopped up in the soda there is smaller thinner bread... Beers are still good value though.. Good luck to us all.. It's just sad to see how the business fold and I think this is the telltale signs that it won't be much longer... I went to order online and realized there is the common convenience fee tacked on. I decided to order the old fashioned way, go there in person. Then I can browse the store while I wait. It has the usual stuff you'd expect to find in mini markets. But there are hidden gems in the dusty corners like a vintage bottle of Trader Vic's Mai Tai cocktail mix. I didn't check the price but I'm wishing it still had the price tag from 1975 on it. Made me think of the Werewolf of London drinking a Pina Colada and his hair was perfect. Another good find was a dusty bottle of Crème de Menthe. It made me want to look up the recipe for a Grasshopper. I don't know if these old mixer's are for sale or just museum pieces. The sandwiches look pretty good, I'll have to try one another time. Overall the veggie pizza was pretty good, but a bit heavy on the veggies. I generally like fewer toppings, but everyone is different. I suppose in the future I could ask to go light on the toppings. But I'd rather they be generous rather than skimpy.
