The people who work here are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I had a pattern for a sweater, but I could not find the specific brand of yarn called for. I love Common Thread! Visited twice: At the beginning of my daughter's career at Skidmore College to buy yarn to make her a sweater for college. And this past graduation weekend for new knitting needles for my plane project. Both times the service was fantastic! I was gently lead to the perfect solution by the kind owner. Awesome yarn selection. Mostly geared for knitters but I was able to pick up some crochet supplies

The store is well stocked and reasonably priced. Lots of samples on display and Doreen is very helpful! However, I recently took a crochet class that cost $25. The teacher didn't offer the pattern (copyright issue) which cost $11.25, there wasn't an offer of a discount if you purchased the yarn in the store and the teacher spent the time chasing her puppy around the store instead of offering help or suggestions to the other person who was very new at crocheting. I was VERY disappointed by this....and haven't had the time to go back to speak to Doreen directly. read more

Walked into this terrific yarn store in Saratoga Springs and was warmly greeted by who I assume to be the owner (sorry, didn't catch the name). She saw my daughter admiring a few crocheted toys, and gifted us with one of them as a random act of crotchet kindness! Such a cool souvenir. She gave me handy tips on how to crotchet and made me feel right at home. We are from out of town, so it's too bad I can't come here regularly. Everything a yarn shop should be. Walking in, sensory overload begins ( a good thing with regards to yarn shops). Fiber is organized by weight and the selection is varied with some nice, unexpected surprises. Store is well kitty with nice natural lighting as well. Staff and owner are friendly and helpful. Common Thread is staffed with friendly, competent people. The shop is stocked with yarn for any project you could imagine. I've knit for grandchildren in wonderfully soft, washable pastels. I've knit shawls from locally hand dyed wool. I've knit sweaters from an inexpensive acrylic/wool mix, one for my wool averse son, and one for my husband because I liked it so much. This is the place where I learned how to knit four months ago. I decided to learn by visiting the drop-in classes on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evenings. In a social setting, I learned the basics while meeting other local women and men who are so cool. A great time and place to learn from one another, trade stories and have good, hearty laughs. The store mesmerizes you with the variety of colors and textures of the superior quality fiber. The layout of the store flows and always catches the eye. Many excellent crocheting, knitting and spinning instructors teach exciting and fun classes at convenient times. Since I am a HUGE fan of reward programs, Common Thread offers a great one to participate in. In closing, Doreen (the owner) really cares about her customers, staff, and store. Good luck trying to find a parking place in downtown Saratoga.Every place there used to be a parking lot they have now built a building. I should have been suspicious when I found a spot relatively close to the store. Even if it was not plowed out. (This was in February). I ended up with a parking ticket. I am here at least 2 times a week either for a class or a social knit. The yarns are decadent and hard to resist so shopping inevitably happens too. Everyone is welcoming here. Please note that they have moved to 508 Broadway in Saratoga Springs. This is a great local yarn store. The staff is super friendly and helpful. They carry local products and a terrific international variety of yarns. Natural fiber to blends.. I'm sure they have the nicer synthetics too... they cover the gamut. They also have a lot of community events. I went recently for a "From Scratch Club" swap and thought it was really cool of them to host when they could have gone home. Additionally, there is a whole lotta yarn bombing going on outside! That was neat to see. There is definitely not enough of that kind of enthusiastic creativity going on up here! They always have some spiffy irresistible on sale. I bought a pad for my arthritic elbow. I saw they also have wrist supports and so on. Craft in comfort! Additionally, they've started carrying more crochet supplies (YAY!) and are having and open crochet on Saturdays. I'm excited about this place, and the stuff they are doing! read more

I wanted to support a local small business, so I drove from Clifton Park to Saratoga to buy a pair of knitting needles that I could have easily ordered online. On the advice of a friend I also brought a project I needed some help with, simply to inquire if that was a service they provided. From the time I got to the store, the woman who I presume is the owner was rude and short with me. When I asked if they offered help with projects, she acted as though even ASKING her was an inconvenience, even though I said repeatedly I didn't need help that day; she went on to tell me several times that weekends would always just be too busy, and that MAYBE I could come in on a Wednesday. Then when I asked about the return policy if I realized I didn't need a second pair of needles (being unsure of what I had at home), she also acted very put out by the question and basically accused me of seeking to use the needles and then return them. I wish I had the wherewithal to give her this feedback at the time but I was too surprised and embarrassed. Further, thinking back to my other experiences in the store, she has always behaved this way. My only regret is that I made my purchase, and didn't just walk out. I will never shop there again. read more
