Despite being an office that is "nice" and "friendly", the billing/insurance situation at this office is unacceptable. I cannot stress enough that you should absolutely trust previous reviews that rate this office poorly, and NOT BECOME A PATIENT. Both of my young adult children went to this office, with separate insurance, and were assured repeatedly that the office accepted their insurance. Lo and behold, months later, both were presented with bills showing that their insurance did not in fact cover nearly anything, and both girls are now stuck with bills in the thousands. This qualifies as a scam. Any medical office that preys upon young people and lies repeatedly in order to entice them to use their services, and then sends them a "revised bill" months later, is morally bankrupt and should feel nothing but shame. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE I took my daughters to Dr. Kress for a few years and was generally pleased with how they were treated. They have never had cavities or needed extensive dental work. In Dec 2021, I received a letter from her office stating they would no longer accept my insurance. I was reassured by Dr. Kress that they would help me process a claim with my insurance as an out-of-network patient. My insurance paid a minute fraction of her exorbitant fees and I was left with close to $1000 in dental bills. Mind you this charge was for two dental cleanings and sealants, which Dr. Kress convinced me that my daughter absolutely needed despite my hesitation. Dr. Kress has a pushy and persuasive communication style that leaves you feeling like if you don't adhere to her treatment protocol then you are simply neglecting your dental care. When I expressed my concern over the outrageous bill, I was told it was my responsibility to pay, that she would not reduce her fees, and that I should take it up with my insurance. Needless to say, we left her dental practice deeply disappointed. In 2022, I made regular payments toward our balance and when I asked to have an updated invoice sent reflecting my payments, no such information was ever sent. I assumed our insurance had either finally paid, or Dr. Kress decided to waive the balance so I did not follow up. Ten months later, I received a letter that the balance was sent to Collections. I received no prior warning, written or verbal, from Dr. Kress that this would happen and was shocked considering we had been great clients and had been paying her fees despite their exorbitance. I reached out and agreed to pay the balance owed in order to be removed from Collections. It took me two days to pay our bill because her online payment system crashed repeatedly. After finally successfully processing payment of the balance, I was told I now had a $90 late fee! This blatantly rude behavior toward a former client is what motivated me to write this letter. As a Mom who just wanted to receive dental care for her children, ultimately I was overcharged, verbally harassed, and then assessed a late fee for Dr. Kress's faulty online payment system. This letter is meant to notify the reader of Dr. Kress's inability to serve her clientele without prioritizing her profits over service. AVOID THIS PRACTICE! read more

My daughter called in April of 2024 to ask if they accepted our insurance. They told her yes, but they are out of network for our plan but we have out of network benefits. my family was going through a lot at the time and didn't really look at the bills close enough and my daughter had a lot of work done so no alarm bells went off about the amounts at the time. Found out this year that they have been paying out of network all this time. They knew what kind of insurance she had and they didn't tell her they were out of network. She also is a UK student and doesn't understand the workings of insurance. While I accept responsibility for not checking her EOBs she did ask and they led her to believe they were in network. They also text you bills without a summary and ask to put it on your card. If you are going to go here ask for a summary to make sure they are billing you correctly and claims are processing correctly. They NEVER EVER answer the phone! EVER. I have left them about 8 messages regarding this and have not received a single returned call. They need to advise patients especially students that yes they can accept PPO plan but that the claims will process out of network! I feel they know that a lot of students can be taken advantage of as well so they don't bother telling them this info. Lesson learned for my student and my family! They really need to work on the customer service as well if they can't EVER answer the phone nor return calls! read more

I never take the time to write a review for any product or service unless I have a significant positive or negative experience. Unfortunately, my experience with Commonwealth Smiles has been poor. I expressed interest in getting my teeth professionally whitened with Dr. Kress, who recommended her in-office Zoom Teeth Whitening procedure. After researching the cost, the average cost is $500. Dr. Kress charged me $677 dollars for the procedure. That would not be super concerning if she were the person administering the teeth whitening procedure. However, the person who actually administered the procedure was a dental assistant. The dental assistant disclosed that she had never done this procedure by herself before, stating this was her first time. Despite being a very nice person, the dental assistant did not seem competent just yet in her skills for such a procedure. It was my assumption that only dentists and dental hygienists should administer teeth whitening, as the bleaching and curing agents involved require specialized skill. Dr. Kress did not tell me prior to booking the whitening service that she wouldn't be the one administering it. There was no way for me to provide informed consent in this situation, because had I known that a dental assistant would by administering the procedure, I would not have felt comfortable paying $677 for that. It was only after the treatment had already begun that I was informed that Dr. Kress would not be administering the procedure and that this was the first time that dental assistant had ever administered the procedure by herself. I should not be charged such an exorbitant cost to be a guinea pig. When I confronted Dr. Kress with my concerns, she stated, "She's helped me do these many times." This is not a professional way to handle business. After researching Zoom Whitening, the site reports that a dentist or dental hygienist should perform the procedure. The site also states that the dentist is supposed to provide an "Aftercare Kit" post Zoom Whitening procedure. I did not receive any "Aftercare Kit." This practice is not operating in a professional manner, and I am sad to have wasted close to $700 for results that were not satisfactory. read more

The main reasons for my review -negligent quoting of insurance- it's their job to know what is or isn't covered and to call my insurance if there is any grey area- I would be held liable if I mis-quoted a customer by $200 and they were billed for 300% of what I quoted (February) -Not verifying my billing address for accuracy -Treating me as if I am a criminal trying to skip out of the bill. The way dr. Kress spoke to me had my blood boiling. I called about a crown that came off its bed and asked about having it glued back on. An appointment turned into disappointment. I was told $130 for an exam, x-ray and the re-attachment. Before I left it turned into $238 and still no crown attached. I get why, but getting charged an extra $100 and told they can't do it felt like getting taken advantage of. The dentist came in and instead of talking face-to-face, she sat behind me almost the whole time using her computer's cursor to point out all the things needing done on a monitor up and to my right. Plus she talked way, way, too fast and kept saying "dude" and "man" - did not feel at all professional, and also like I was getting hustled. I saw Dr. Kress for 4+ years and never had any issues with my billing or insurance. I went in June 2022 for a normal cleaning and then moved so I did not go back to Dr. Kress. In August 2023 I called the office about getting my records transferred to my new dentist and was told I had an outstanding bill. I was NEVER told about this bill prior to this call. Her office staff billed my primary insurance (who they were no longer contracted with) and it was denied and they NEVER billed my secondary insurance. They then tried to bill them in August 2023 and it was denied since it was over a year ago. When talking to Dr. Kress she kept saying it was my responsibility to make sure all bills were paid, but I was never contacted about a billing issue. She is continuing to make it seem like it is my fault and threatening to send me to collections over something that was all her office staff's fault. read more

DO NOT USE THIS DENTIST!! I read the reviews and took a chance before visiting and omg. This dentist treats her employees like garbage and is very short with people. As a customer, all she cares about is trying to upsell products and you can tell that there is no genuine concern for your needs. All she cares about is making money off of you. This place is a sinking ship and people like her have no business trying to run an office. If she tells you that your insurance will cover a procedure then do not believe her!!!!!! You leave there thinking that everything was taken care of and then receive a $700 bill in the mail stating that the insurance did not cover something. This place is an absolute scam that does half-ass work and charges top dollar. Save yourself the stress and go to an actual dentist like Brannon Crossing or anywhere else but here. Yes, you win $60, but you lose my trust. I came because of all the positive reviews online, BUT I had the WORST experience ever! I did regular cleaning with them and they assured it was fully covered by my insurance, I asked them to check with my insurance before the treatment, and they did. and later, they billed me an outstanding BILL. Also, the cleaning was done by hygienist, not the doctor. I will not be back. During my routine (and first appointment with Dr. Kress) she discovered an unknown 'spot' on the roof of my mouth and told me she wanted to follow up on it. I scheduled a follow up appointment for today, only to be told upon arrival I wasn't scheduled. She would not take five minutes to check the 'spot'. I was told she would look at it when I return to get filings replaced, which I made clear to her is part of my long term plan. Is this about money only? Does patient care not matter? Gave Commonwealth Smiles a few chances, and then I looked elsewhere. The staff are nice enough, but I didn't have the best experiences. Dr. Kress comes off as a bit rushed, a bit pushy, and sells products hard. Also tries to refer you to other specialists (orthodontists, etc.) that she knows so you can spend some money with them. I've had X-rays taken elsewhere with no problem, and it normally takes 3 or 4 total. I had 12 X-rays taken in a row because the hygienist couldn't get the images 'at the right angle'. I wasn't thrilled about that unnecessary extra exposure to radiation. I also have heard others with similar negative experiences, and they (like me) chose Commonwealth Smiles because of the suspiciously high Google reviews. They push Google reviews hard (via e-mail and in face-to-face interactions) and have drawings for electronic toothbrushes and such if you leave them reviews. I found another dentist in Lexington and have been much more satisfied with my experience. read more

My experience at Commonwealth Smiles was a nightmare. I am surprised at the overall rating of this dental practice as I felt very rushed and did not feel like a thorough job was done - even for a simple filling. Jessica Kress was a rude and snappy when conversing with me about what she felt needed to be done (come to find out she suggested unnecessary procedures). She seems to not be able to keep dental assistants. Often times she is rude to them pushing them out of the way and saying to them "you're not doing this right, see this is how it's done". She rushes people in and out, often not learning about them, the assistant types out all that is said during the appointment so that she knows which person is which. I've never seen someone treat their assistants the way that Dr. Kress does. Also the other people in her office haven't been there that long the Hygienist a year and the front desk maybe 5 months. High turnover in a dentist office is not good. I know she's been through 3 or 4 dental assistants in the last year. There has to be a reason for that. This was the worst experience I have ever had. Dr. Kress is absolutely nothing short of a used car salesmen. She took picture after picture telling me everything that was wrong with my teeth making me think I should perhaps sue my former dentist for malpractice. It wasn't like I hadn't been to the dentist in years. He had just quit practicing to pursue something else. I had a panic attack and begged for my purse to take a Xanax but no she kept on going after I had just told her I had had a horrible experience with a dentist long ago who used a coaxing technique and I didn't like that type of dentistry then within 2 minutes she was doing exactly that. Then on top of all this like an idiot I came back because all my metal fillings had ruined my teeth and had to come out according to her(I only had one tooth that was bothering me). And she said and the office girl said "girlfriend you have excellent insurance it will cover all this work". After my 3rd horrible visit and the fact that I felt I needed to tell her that the porcelain fillings were hurting my teeth worse and she needed to fix I was told I needed to still wait and let them settle. She proceeded to do 3 more teeth. After she got done she surprised me real good with a nice big bill. I said what about the insurance. She said "girlfriend you have met your deductible". Dr. Kress and her staff are great, however there has been a recent change in hours for cleaning and exam. I have gone here for years and previously exams and cleanings were done on what seemed like any day. Now they are only done Tuesday and perhaps Wednesday if you're lucky. I thought primary care dentistry was essential and it is impossible to get an essential dental exam any other day. Very disappointed that I will have to leave this practice, but at least I will be able to get an exam from a dentist who is more forgiving of their patient's time constraints. read more

In the course of seeing dr Kress I've had things rebilled several times, I have actually had to contact the insurance company several times and correct the mistakes that the staff has made.
