We were spoiled while living in northern Virginia, where there was a large variety of Asian and…read moreother specialty markets. We had become accustomed to dropping into the Asian grocery for an an abundance of hard-to-find and inexpensive fruits and vegetables; to the Indian store for exotic spices and savory treats (Samosa); and to the Persian shop for pitas and baklava. We've been looking for similar shops in the Fredericksburg area -- and found this store referenced on Yelp. The store was easy to reach off Plank Road, though tucked away in small center (with many closed storefronts) in a neighborhood. The "neighborhood" felt safe, and there was plentiful parking. The shop was cheery and bright, with one aisle of fresh fruits and vegetables, a refrigerated and freezer section, many aisles of packaged goods, and some household items. The assortment tended towards foods from east and southeast Asia. We ended up buying canned coconut milk, and a nice assortment of fresh vegetables that aren't available in our local Food Lion - bean sprouts, bok Choy, bitter gourd, and Japanese eggplant. We were also tempted by the frozen wrappers to make Dim Sum or Filipino spring rolls. Next time! We looked for some Indian spices (coriander, timur), but they were not available. Prices were comparable to our regular grocery store. The older man who checked us out was quick-to-smile, but we didn't talk. We would return to this store when next in Fredericksburg.

"Mexican" restaurants that were closer were closed because of the holiday. So I called this place to see if I could place an order. Now, they lady who answered the phone didn't speak English, which was no problem because 1) I knew this was probably authentic cuisine and 2) because it was close by and I could check out the menu. So the restaurant is adjacent to a grocery store. Nothing super fancy, and we placed our order to go. The woman who helped us was FANTASTIC. She didn't speak English and the menus were in Spanish but she patiently pointed out the options via the pictures. I know enough Spanish to get through key words like pollo, chorizo, etc. So ordering was not the hard part and the cashier was super sweet. The price was relatively low too. I got two entrees (quesadilla - chicken, and one with chicken and chorizo, they came with salad), an order of guacamole, chips, and fried plantains all for $30. So once we got home and tasted our food OMG. First of all you get a ton of food. The chicken and beef were tender and well seasoned, not hard stuff you get at most Mexican restaurants. This is a Salvadoran food by the way to be clear. Please get the chips which are crispy and fluffy and the guacamole I could still see avocado bits. Just as a side I liked the chorizo quesadilla. And plantains are my absolute favorite and these came with a dessert sauce on the side. Please go here! Work on your Spanish and enjoy the best Salvadoran food in Fredericksburg. Kick the other places like El Partron and Mexico Palace to the side. This food is authentic.
