By the time Colony got here, my husband and I, age 76, were exhausted, working on too little sleep for days. We didn't need complaints from a well-rested prima donna who'd just come back from FOUR DAYS off with pay (long Thanksgiving weekend). Colony couldn't find a substitute driver and crew. Thank goodness, we were able to find a local company that stepped in. Otherwise, we'd have been non-compliant with our closing agreement.

I moved from Boston to Martha's Vineyard last November, and they couldn't have been better. They answered all my nervous questions, mostly in a timely fashion except maybe once or twice, but I called a lot because I hadn't moved in 30 years. As for the move itself, it went smoothly, the guys helped me finish packing when that was not what I'd intended but, oops! I fell behind a bit. They even got my plants down to the vineyard without incident, and I have a ficus, and a 10-foot tree. When they set the furniture down in the new place, they put it down very carefully, so there was no scraping on the floor. Now I'm moving again to another place on the Vineyard, and I immediately called Barnes again.

Pros: The company was communicative the entire time, and prompt on arrival. The junk removal itself was well done, and the apartment left in decent condition on their exit. Cons: Misleading pricing, VERY far off estimates. When Zach arrived and we did the walkthrough, we went through everything that needed to be done. He gave me the estimate of 2 guys for "2 hours tops". The final tally (for day 1) ended up being 2 guys for 4-5 hours + 2 guys for 3 hours. Day 2 was 3 guys for an additional 2 hours. In follow up communications, he tried to spin it as 'saving me money'. Going from 2 guys ~2 hours to ~3-4 guys for ~6-7 hours is misleading. There was a heavy stove found in the basement that added a complication, but not to the tune of ~2x the labor for 3-4x the time. Additionally, there is a sliding scale on pricing for truck bed space. I've worked with several junk companies before for jobs -- no one else I've worked with has ever had that pricing structure. When you tell someone that a full truck load of junk costs $1150, they would expect it to be $287.50 per quarter. Not some sliding scale 'bulk discount on junk truck space'. This is the sort of thing you would expect from some megacorp with hidden fees and unclear pricing. I will not be doing business with this company again, and cannot recommend anyone else to do the same.

I've rented a unit here for many years and the staff is attentive to every detail. One time I had a friend going through a very rough time who needed to move her stuff like NOW. Since I already had an access code we rented a truck, found an empty unit and moved in after business hours. When I called to explain the situation and activity the next day, the staff could not have been more understanding or accommodating. A few days ago I emptied anything of value in anticipation of hiring someone to clean out the remaining junk. Because there was nothing of value in the unit I simply didn't put the padlock back on. Do you know they called me to tell me during their normal property check they noticed the lock was gone and asked if everything was ok. Imagine? I had no idea they were that "eyes and hands on" there. As I explained my intent to clear out the unit, the young lady on the phone could not have been pleasant or helpful.
