This place changed my life, truly, and I'm so grateful for the growth opportunities I received here. Sad it closed down.

Our daughter was a resident at Compass Rose Academy from March of 2021 until January of 2022. The growth she made and treatment she received have been life changing for her and our whole family. We feel that one of the greatest assets of the program was that we were invited to participate in our daughter's treatment. The support we received through weekly parent programs, parent weekends and recommend resources made her growth through the program and transition into independent living a success. Through Compass Rose, we were given the support we needed to support her. We have continued to benefit from alumni weekends and updates from CRA. This continued support has been invaluable. Our daughter's difficulties didn't end when she returned home, but the skills we learned, and the support we continue to receive have helped us to rebuild our family relationships. We don't always know what to do, but knowing where to look for guidance has given us hope and encouragement for the future. We believe it is helping her too. She learned how to discern between healthy and unhealthy relationships and to take responsibility for making her life good. We are so grateful for CRA. read more

Saved our life as a family. I recently viewed some of the google postings for Compass Rose Academy and I believe in every person's right to voice their opinion. Please keep in mind while reading that families coming to Compass Rose have very very difficult children and if the only outcome they are willing to accept is a "model" child, then either expectations will need modification or there will be much disappointment. The youth trusted to CRA are not neurotypical. Yes, they can be darling, loving, creative etc. They also do not experience the world the way most other people do. These kids typically have wiring that is just different from others, whether from substance exposure developmentally, emotional trauma or neglect preverbally, or other causes we will never know. They are challenged emotionally and behaviorally in the extreme and their heroic parents have done their all out best to help them with whatever resources they can find. Usually when these kids enroll, their families are at their wits end, exhausted in the extreme. Marriages are stressed to their limits by these kids as they are often good at triangulating and manipulating their parents and siblings. What this facility brings to the table is a chance to breathe and safely let these kids get consistent boundaries and feedback. Parents can sleep, socialize with their other kids and find help by talking to staff and other parents while sharing their experience, struggles and realistic hope for the future. No place is perfect but we found CRA to be safe, consistent, seasoned, and capable of reproducing the same boundaries and message 24/7 when we were completely and totally exhausted. We were able to find a new playing field in which to engage with our daughter and find a way to love her again when we had given up hope. If you need to talk to alumni parents and figure out whether this place may help you, contact the school and they can put you in contact with one of us. Making the decision to send your child to a treatment facility will be one of the most difficult of your life. That said, if you're looking at this review you are considering this drastic step and researching what you hope/pray will be the right decision. Choosing the right facility for your child is something you must consider carefully. For us, Compass Rose was the right choice. First, your child will enter a safe environment, so that has got to give you some peace of mind. Second and very importantly for our family, faith is actively discussed, and we really believe that God is present and helping heal your child. Initially it was a struggle, and I don't want to sugar coat that as it will likely be a struggle for your child and family as well. That said, it will improve, she will start to make friends and her ability to cope with whatever issues she has will improve. Our family dynamic has improved we are proud of the progress our daughter and our family made and feel Compass Rose played a big part in that. People typically write reviews when they are angry or thrilled. I am trying to write this review looking back and saying it was not perfect (you won't find a perfect place), but it was a facility where most of the staff is quite kind and exceptionally caring. The parents are very involved and willing to assist in any way they can - even if it's just to listen. It's amazing how similar the different families journeys are and that in itself provides some reassurance you are not alone. read more

Our daughter attended the Academy from March 2020 through April 2021. The hardest decision we ever made but a decision that changed her life and ours and I'm so grateful for all that was provided to walk us toward a promising future together. Our daughter since leaving has continued her relationships with staff and sees the impact and the love and time everyone gave her so that she can experience her best self. she holds boundaries for herself and others well and is enjoying a new outlook for life. CRA was an answer to prayer for our granddaughter who was suffering deep losses. The program and the staff met her where she was and walked with her through her healing process. It was exactly what she needed. We are forever grateful for the leadership and loving care she was shown from beginning to end. We believe, by God's grace, her stay at CRA saved her life. read more

Previously left a 5 star review on Google. Took it down because I realized I was giving way too much credit for doing pretty much the bare minimum. Before being sent to CRA, I spent 7 months in an abusive wilderness program. Being allowed to shower, use a toilet and sleep in a bed was like heaven to me, and staff not putting everything I did under a microscope and treating me with basic respect was something I hadn't experienced in months. So I thought it was this great place. But for the money our parents give them, this place doesn't cut it. As a student in Compass Rose, I lived in a old, ant-infested house on a campus with juvenile offenders. This included sex offenders, which, considering many of the girls had sexual trauma, seems inappropriate, and frankly, extremely lazy. If you want to open a program, at least get your own campus. Especially since we were forbidden from interacting with and even acknowledging them. My parents were under the impression that the food was "healthy". Maybe on a technical level, but it was mediocre at best and inedible at worst. Everyone gained weight. If you wanted to eat your own food (microwave meals, etc.) You'd have to go through a long, drawn out process, as you needed permission from the higher-ups for any adjustments. The school program is a complete joke. All online, there are only 2 teachers, who have all the rest of the students to attend to, so this "1:1 attention" they advertise is exaggerated. And if you have a learning disability (in my experience, undiagnosed at the time, but still should have been obvious to these "experts"), forget about it. They hassle you if you're not "on task" but don't understand how difficult it is to be "on task" in the totally unengaging, frankly cheap environment they have created. "Rigorus" my ass. It was so bad I ended up having to drop out completely. They isolate you on campus. If you go on outings, you're not allowed to interact with people outside the program. They read your mail, which is illegal. I was banned from writing to girls once I got out because of swearing, which none of them expressed discomfort with. They enforce purity culture. I once had the male cottage supervisor order me to change the "inappropriate" mid-thigh bike shorts that my mother bought me before going to the zoo. He gave us consequences for not wearing sweatpants over our leggings on the way to or from the car on our weekly trips to the gym. I'd also like to add that I was forced to stay 3 extra months after moving to the last phase of the program because, after being separated from my parents for an extended period of time, and after they had allowed me to go through some terrible things at the hands of these programs, I had a distant relationship with them. That's all. I cannot comprehend why they thought this was appropriate. If they would've sent me home, I would have at least had the opportunity to start rebuilding a relationship with them. Seeing them every day wether I liked it or not. Talking with them. Just being there. They straight up lied to my parents and didn't tell them I finished the program. They forced me to have the "graduation ceremony" when I didn't want it because I still felt terrible. I didn't "change" because I wasn't given the space to. I just read the other reviews here, and wow, I am shocked! My daughter has been here for the last 8 months and is making big strides in emotional well-being. They have all new beautiful cottages, on-site accredited schooling with licensed and caring teachers. When I bring my daughter back to campus from visits she is greeted with hugs from other residents and staff. The girls do have the opportunity to set their own goals and structure as they progress through the program. I recommend it. read more

I'll sum up by saying that taking our daughter here was one of the worst mistakes we ever made as parents. Horrible experience all around. The do-nothing counselors are awful and contribute nothing to the girls, the facilities are dirty, the "school" is a joke and run by uncaring people, and you get all that for huge sums of money you pay them each month. Our daughter emerged from there worse than when she went in as did all the girls she encountered and kept up with after she left. read more

this is from a student perspective, this is not hate towards the staff, simply how to make your daughter's experience easier on her. for the parents seeing growth in their kids, growth is not attributed to compass rose as an organization, growth is attributed to students being without their parents and being forced to grow up on their own. secondly, parents reading this review trying to find a good place for their kids, please if they are under 15 do not send them here. you might think that you have tried everything but if they are going through it they need you. not 1 five minute phone call a week that ends in tears. please please try a shorter term facility first. if you feel that they want to come, it's different. but don't be the parent that drives away from their crying child into the care of strangers who they hope are good people. also keep in mind that when other girls are there, you have no idea who they are or what their background is. many students come out with more street smarts than when they went in purely because they now know to do bad things and not get caught. you dont want to drop her off when you are on bad terms, show emotion, show them that you are going to miss them and it's going to hurt. if you see that they are just getting worse and are not being receptive to help after 6 or so months, they are not going to suddenly be cured. i think the intentions of compass rose in pure but the execution does not show that. lastly, send her mail everyday, show her that you're thinking of her, getting a package will make her smile from ear to ear. dont be afraid to question the program, if you see something you don't like, say something, whether they will do anything about it is 50/50. i very much hope that one of the teachers there "miss tab" is still apart of the teaching staff. she was one of the few people who treated us as more than program kids. she was the teacher who made me interested in my now career (medical assistant currently, future labor and delivery nurse) through a class that she led about child development. please acknowledge your daughters talents and culture them. oh and send her with lots of snacks -lw read more

Compass rose could definitely use More female higher ups (non-house staff), easier access to personalized therapy (music, dance, physical activity, alone time, religion, etc.), more communication between everyone (stop putting the blame on the kids when the house staff failed to provide the information, or better yet! Don't act like you are too good to talk to us). nutritious, healthy and actually decent edible food would be Greatly appreciated, the ability to get therapist permission instead of higher up permission to shorten see-slip process. Cottage 11 needs to be redone, it's absolutely disgusting and there is a lot of jealousy towards cottage 10 for having a newer, cleaner, and more perky and uplifting cottage (I hated taking showers because I felt more gross coming out of them than I did going in), one time quite a few wasps got in my room and they still made me stay in there without having someone come in and at least spray or fix my window. Compass rose needs to let parents and kids make more decisions for a better personalized treatment (they are implementing their own structure which can really clash with home life and structure. We live on campus with over 200 kids we aren't even aloud to wave or be polite to, it teaches bad manners and antisocial or "stuck up" behavior; as well as we are only in the company of the other 6-11 girls we live with for approximately a year. When we get out our social skills are worse, we don't know how to cope with living where we don't always have support and structure. We need to be able to make our own structure and stick to it. House staff that we can relate to rather than ones who don't understand a single thing we are going through. The place makes you feel like you are trapped, cement walls in your room, can't open your window, not aloud to go outside without supervision, everything is micro managed, and they stick 12 moody, depressed girls in one place together where they feel like their parents hate or abandoned them (most have drug addictions, and they all have serious withdrawals such as outbursts, one girl punched through her window and we were all in our rooms crying for 2 hours because we weren't aloud to come out). They put on a show only when parents are around and treat us kids like crap. We get no respect from any staff there except for Chelsea, Heidi, tilly, And Lisa (the nurse). Our bra straps can't show at all even if it's a sports bra (moms, you know how difficult this is), and we must wear socks and a bra at all times (even while we sleep). Sitting in our room and not socializing when they tell us to is considered unhealthy even tho the only people we can socialize with are unhealthy and every time we step out of our rooms it's just drama and gossip. They teach us to suppress our emotions rather than manage and let them out. You gain a lot of weight there. Everyone does. It takes a few months to get anything done, and they never really believe you. Also for all you lgbtq+ haters, it's 12 girls in a confined space, with a lot of pent up sexual energy... almost everybody went behind staffs back and messed around with a few girls, and I actually publically dated a girl while I was there! There's a lot of body shaming there, and no therapy for loving yourself or your body. My self confidence is basically gonna because of them. The horse therapy is nice, but they don't let you ride because they don't have the insurance for it. Basically, compass rose is absolute shit, and until they fix these things, sending your children there will only screw them up even more. read more
