It felt like such a traditional New England Trip, thanks to Compass Rose Inn. Very quaint, right in the middle of town, and the room was so tidy and bathroom was beautiful! They left our directions taped to the door which was everything we needed and so helpful. The room was delightful and very clean. The bathroom was beautiful, comfortable. And a very eclectic breakfast included in the morning. Loved our Stay - if we ever need to visit Newburyport again we will be staying here. read more

We rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience was disappointing. Our room was 73 degrees overnight, and the air conditioning would not work. The thermostat asked for a PIN code, and nothing we tried worked. We contacted the innkeeper in the middle of the night and were told to turn the dial instead of touching the screen and to open the windows. We had already tried both. Around 4:30 a.m., she came to our room. Three of the four windows were stuck shut, and the only one she was able to open had no screen, making it unusable. Around 5:00 a.m., we were told someone had "turned the AC back on," and only then did the room begin cooling. What was most frustrating was the inconsistent explanation. We were initially told this had never happened before. Later we were told the heating system automatically switched because it was 58 degrees outside. If that's how the system works, the listing shouldn't advertise central air conditioning without explaining that guests may not actually be able to use it. We were awake for most of the night because the room was so warm. We politely requested some type of refund or credit since the advertised air conditioning wasn't available, but that request was denied. The property itself is nice, but customer service during this situation was very disappointing. We simply expected a comfortable night's sleep and a reasonable effort to make things right. read more

Classy and beautiful, great location. We stayed for two nights over Labor Day and really enjoyed the Inn. The room was well appointed, ac worked well. There was a wedding party there that weekend but the owners gave us a forewarning and also offered to accommodate us with breakfast elsewhere if needed. Luckily the wedding party was friendly and there was no need for that. The bed was comfortable, bathroom was huge. The location was nicely tucked away but right at the edge of downtown. Parking was easy and check in and checkout a breeze. Definitely recommend if you are looking for a quiet few nights of R&R! read more

Wow!! We came for a family overnighter and quickly decided we wanted to comeback for a longer stay. The inn is on a side street off of the main road which makes walking to the main road (with tons of restaurants and coffee shops etc) easy and delightful. The innkeepers were warm, accommodating, and accessible. The breakfast in the morning was delicious and I love that they had freshly brewed coffee as well as keurig coffee. The house itself is just beautiful and the rooms feel so luxurious. I just finished the show "Bridgerton" and I felt like I was staying in a room at one of the nobility's great houses. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was large. Definitely book here if you are coming to Newburyport. read more

The inn is set back so it literally looks like your walking into a fairytale! The inn itself is immaculate. The room we rented was spotless like the rest of the inn. Fireplace, French doors, a third galley room with a sink, fridge, air conditioner, coffee maker. Full bathroom with deep tub/shower, toilet & porcelain sink. Had better sleep on their king bed than mine at home! We go away every year for our anniversary & this was by far our favorite getaway! read more

Very nice hotel in the heart of Newburyport. The convenience was key for us. It was built less then twenty years ago but was made trying to capture the ambience of something older and I think they succeeded. Very nice big rooms divided into a bedroom and a sitting room. Nice décor and beautiful moldings throughout. We were disappointed to find out that we could not use the fireplace until November because the flues had not been opened. It seemed like an easy fix so that was a bummer. The Inn Keeper, Kim, was new but very personable and really tried to make the experience nice. The breakfast was disappointing and more like a Marriott Courtyard than an expensive B&B. There was only one tiny homemade dish that wasn't very good. The same set-up was there both mornings we visited. If they can work on their breakfast a little, this could be a much better place. I would give them a 4.5 because of that if I could but despite that, we would return. read more

The Compass Rose Inn, Newburyport, MA I spent a three-day work week at the Compass Rose Inn in the old Newburyport, MA, in September of 2012. My flight from San Francisco arrived at Logan Airport a little later than scheduled, and I was slow and disorganized about retrieving my luggage and finding the car. I arrived at the B&B late. But as late as I was, Gloria, the manager, was gracious, and friendly, and made me feel immediately welcome. She was still awake, even though it was past ten in the evening. I was fortunate. She'd become engrossed in a book and I caught her while she was still awake. Usually, she isn't up at that hour. She rises early each morning to prepare breakfast for her guests. The house is modern, built less than ten years ago. But it is designed to look like a remodeled period piece. The rooms are spacious two room suites, with a fireplace in each and a large bathroom and walk-in closet. If this had been a pleasure trip, and my wife had been with me, this would have been a very cosy and comfortable getaway. But it was business, and the Compass Rose Inn is well equipped with a strong WiFi signal. I was hooked up to the Internet and working from the desk in my suite in no time. Across the street from the inn is a good restaurant, the 10 Center. And within a few blocks there are several other excellent places to eat, a small bookstore, a coffee shop, pizza joint, and I believe there is also an ice cream parlor. Newburyport rolls up the sidewalks early. So if you plan to dine out, don't dally. One evening I found that I'd been so engrossed inw ork that I'd forgotten the time and was surprised at nearly nine in the evening to recall that I'd not yet eaten dinner and had better move it! There is one restaurant in particular that I recommend, a little bit of a walk (it isn't around the corner) called The Mission Oak Grill. I've eaten there on three ocassions, and it never disappoints. Breakfasts at the Compass Rose are great. Gloria is very considerate and tries to meet your special dietary needs or restrictions. For instance, I have been on a weigh-tloss plan for some time -- and I now eat lots and lots of vegetables every day. I mentioned to Gloria in passing that I was missing my breakfast tomatoes, and the next morning she presented me with a bowl of garden-grown tomatoes. That was very sweet! Thank you, Gloria! So I highly recommend the Compass Rose Inn. It's a bit pricey, of course, but well worth it. read more

Beyond clean, bright, airy, large, and comfortable. We stayed here this past weekend for my daughter's wedding, and we were treated so wonderfully. Breakfast in the morning and she helped us out IMMENSELY when we were running short on time, getting together a cheese and fruit tray for the girls and our family in the other Inn while we went and had our hair done. I would absolutely recommend this to ANYONE who wants a beautiful spot to stay and relax in Newburyport. I can't wait to go back to just relax and enjoy an weekend there. This is a lovely new B&B that feels like an old B&B. That may sound bad but I mean it in a very good way. The bed was ultra comfortable, warmed towel racks, great views and spacious rooms. We brought bikes so we could get around and also get to Plum Island. There was no real place to keep them but we managed to secure them to a fence and out of view. We didn't need them to get around - everything is close by.The breakfast was very good and Cindy was very gracious that morning and the previous day during check-in. The cost is $300 per night - which some may consider reasonable - I guess pricing is always relative. To me that's a bit high but for a special event in this town - this should definitely make your short list. read more

My husband and I stayed here on our wedding night. It was SO beautiful! I grew up in the area and I had no idea such a gem was right around the corner this whole time. The room had a working fireplace in the living room, separated from the bedroom with pretty french doors. The bathroom was huge and I thought it was a cute touch that they provided black facecloths for removing eye makeup--very clever. I might have to come up with a reason for us to stay here again some day. read more

We just returned home from a weekend at the Compass Rose Inn and cannot wait to go back! Newburyport is a charming town, and the inn is just off the main street so all the shops and restaurants are just a quick walk away, but the way it's set back makes it quiet and peaceful inside. The entire inn is gorgeous. There are only 5 guest rooms, each a suite with a working fireplace in the sitting room which is separated from the bedroom by french doors. The king sized bed was the most comfortable I've ever slept on away from my tempurpedic at home. The bathroom was lovely, spacious, and immaculate. There was also a dressing area outside the bathroom with a second sink, fridge, and (my new obsession) a towel warmer. Ahhhh, how comforting to wrap yourself in a warm, soft towel after a shower! The room also had a flat screen tv with dvd player and lots of cable channels, which was great for us since we found ourselves having trouble tearing ourselves away from the luxurious room. Innkeeper Hal is wonderful! Warm and inviting, he helped us get settled and was easy to find when we needed him, but other than that we were left blissfully alone. The continental breakfast Hal prepared was so much better than any I've had at large hotels: fresh baked breads and quiche - yum! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the Compass Rose Inn. If you're looking for an amazing experience on the North Shore, this is the place to go! read more

Wonderful place to spend the night. Just like home, only better. From the moment we arrived we were treated so special. The rooms are inviting and spacious. They think of everything from ice cold bottles of water in the fridge to Lind chocolates waiting on the dresser. The shower was big enough for two. The bathrooms were so white, clean and beautiful. The details of the room and the décor were perfect. The bed was so comfy that we almost slept through breakfast. But I'm glad we didn't. Gloria had hot coffee and cut up fruit ready at the table. She made our eggs to order and they were delicious. We toured the Inn and found the most wonderful room at the top. It had glass windows all around and you could see for miles. We definitely loved the fact it was so close to everything in town. We recommend it highly. read more

We are in Newburyport to meet our newest baby granddaughter and have had a wonderful time staying at the Compass Rose. Gloria, the innkeeper, and her husband Ken have anticipated everything we could want to make this a relaxing and enjoyable stay, including a firmer pillow, extra sheet, and other requests from our previous stay. They are also good conversationalists when encouraged to join in. The room is extremely comfortable and the bathroom especially is luxurious, with amazingly thick and thirsty white cotton towels! Breakfasts have included a cooked egg dish and/or french toast, fresh fruit, good yogurt, coffee, tea, juice, pastries, cheese, a variety of bread to toast, oatmeal, granola, etc. Every afternoon there is a flask of port and a plate of cookies, and the common area includes a fireplace, games, newspapers, books, videos, magazines, and some comfy couches. We have enjoyed the fireplace in our room. This is the second time we stayed at the Compass Rose and we are enjoying every minute. read more

Beautiful inn located within walking distance to restaurants and shops. The inn was built in 2004 but has the feel of an historic building. Love the large rooms and suite themed rooms. Located in a residential area but across from a restaurant/bar. I was Orried come Friday night that it might be noisy from the bar with the coming and going of patrons but the room was very quiet and We happily slept thru the night. Only real complaint was the late start to breakfast which was 830. There is a coffee maker in the room and the dining room but we are early risers so went out to eat. The inn keeper generously offered to arrive early to pack breakfast on our departing morning but we declined. We loved the widows peak located up a staircase from the third floor. Table and chairs for four with panoramic views of Gabor and toWn. Nice place for a cocktail or game. read more

Stayed at the charming Compass Rose Inn this past weekend, as part of a "weekend getaway" gift for wife's birthday. It was our first time ever staying in a B & B. We stayed in suite #4, it was a nice cozy, spacious room with a fireplace and has a great view of the water and lighthouse. Fantastic location (located right in downtown Newburyport where there's lots to see and do), just a short walk away from the restaurants and gift shops. Kate (the innkeeper/manager) made us a delicious breakfast the next morning, she'll basically fix you anything you want, all you have to do is ask. The moment you walk thru the door at check-in she makes you feel welcome and right at home. Parking is tight but she allowed us to leave our car in the lot thru the early afternoon so that we could walk around town for a bit after we checked out. We stayed only one night and we didn't want to leave! We'll definitely be staying here again. This was our first time in Newburyport and we both love it, it's wicked awesome!
