Don't go there unless you want to be humiliated!
Sang F.

Disgusting customer service!!!! C'était Une Catastrophe (le service)!!! We have been coming to this small bar / resto for the last 6 years. Not great food. No happy hours specials. But the street, rue Bonaparte, is vibey and fun. We had a lovely drink and wanted to have a light supper. The place straddles both sides of the street now, so the waiter (a blue eyed one, not the rude dark haired one) told us to sit across the street. When we got there, the rude waiter told us to sit at the back next to the wall. Since we were having dinner and there were plenty of empty tables, I asked to sit closer to the street. He came back to take our order very quickly (unusual for France, non?) but I told him we wanted to study the dinner menu but we would have drinks as well. Then he realised we wanted dinner and told us to sit at the back. I said no and asked to sit across the street, back to where we were, next to the actual restaurant. This is where the s-it hit the fan! Excuse my French. This rude waiter told us to sit next to the wall, even though 2 tables next to that were empty and there was no sign of a reservation. In fact the restaurant was about 40% full at that time (6:45). I asked in French 'pourquoi' and he said in English 'because I tell you to sit there! You sit there!' Il m'a dit forcément et impoliment ´you sit there because I tell you!' Malgré ma question 'mais les tables ici (2) sont libre?' I said to him the Restaurant told us to move 3 times! Why did he insist on sitting us next to the wall, but he shouted to say because he said so. I sat there demanding for the manager. By this time thé street was curious and one table of about 8 men who sat next to the table we had vacated (or rather MOVED BY THE WAITER!) nodded in sympathy. Oh, I also told the crowd that the waiter was mad - 'il est fou'. The manager came out after 30 seconds and we thought he came to apologise. Non! He said if we didn't sit next to the wall we must go!!! He said so loudly the whole street could hear him. I said, we have been coming to your restaurant for 6 years and you don't even recognise me? I said the waiter was rude and this is how you treat your loyal customers? We will not go back but I will not keep quiet either. We really thought the manager came to apologise to us but he took the side of one rude waiter and kicked us out! He humiliated us without giving us a chance to explain! Please, if you are reading this, understand I have been a regular customer with regular requirements without being over the top. We tolerate the typical French service because we know there is a system. We have been living in Nice since 2011. We visit a lot of bars and restaurants and we like most of them. We don't criticise them for their food or service because most of the time they are OK. But being rude to customers who have been moved 3 times despite them spending money on dinner? What is the purpose of seating customers at the worst table when there are plenty of empty ones? The waiter and the manager have no business sense, nor customer service training. En faite, je reconnais le patron qui viens de nous exiler, mais il ne me reconnaît pas! Never mind.

Pasta special - ravioli cepes

Fabulous place for lunch among the quaint colorful streets of Nice. The food was excellent for a great price and the vibe was very chic/hip. They offered a fixed menu lunch special for €18.50 which included a entree + dessert + glass of wine + cafe. What a steal! I had the ravioli alla cepes (mushrooms) which was delicious and surprisingly light, so was great for lunch. Then dessert I chose the mascarpone with red fruit (I think it was fruit of the forest?) which was amazing. The service was also super friendly and attentive, though in a traditional French style it was a long, slow lunch. This is a must go!

Also note there is no cell service or WiFi service in the restaurant. Nice ambiance in the restaurant and away from the hustle and bustle of Nice. We ordered the squid, Foie Gras and Filet Mignon. All 3 were very good though I am not a fan of the Fois Gras but it came with a nice salad and bread. The squid was seasoned well and cut thin and flash fried. The filet was sliced and cooked perfect The potatoes were great and also nice salad came with it. Service was ok. Prices Moderate.

I was sooo looking forward to dining here, but unfortunately, I was left with cheese on my face (sorry no eggs here, only cheese, cheese, and more cheese). We arrived a bit early for our reservation (15-20 minutes), but we were seated immediately, which was nice; the table was stuffed into a corner, but at least we were seated. Unfortunately, that was about where the niceness ended. The restaurant is supposed to be housed in a former cheese cave, which I thought would be exciting and romantic, instead it was just hot and cramped. This is one of those restaurants that tries to accommodate as many diners as possible, so we were basically eating right on top of another couple (who were incredibly displeased, even stating, "this service is abysmal"). We could literally hear every word spoken up to two tables away, so don't expect to have any privacy, except from the servers that is. Service was unpleasant and extremely minimal. Our server took our food and drink order, delivered our drinks, another server apologized for the delay in receiving our meal, and our original server delivered our meal...and that was it. They didn't refill our water bottle, ask if I wanted another glass of wine, stop by to see if we liked our meal -or needed else (which we did), or even bring a check. After waiting too long for our check, table full of finished plates and empty cups, we eventually just got up and headed upstairs. Apparently you're supposed to head upstairs to pay, but we'd have never known since our server was doing they're best David Copperfield impression. Now for the food. The kitchen was tiny tiny, so it's no wonder the menu consists of cheese for the starter, cheese for the entree, and cheese for dessert. Sprinkled in-between the assortment of cheeses was a steak masquerading on the menu as "Aubrac Bib", whatever that means, and the Tartiflette, think pork belly scalloped potatoes and the only thing you should order here. The Tartiflette was microwave-lunch small, but it was hot, rich, and pretty meaty for the size. I got the Camembert (takes 30 minutes) and it was pretty awful as a meal. It's not even really a dish. They literally opened up the wooden wheel of cheese, peeled back the paper, sprinkled a few things on top, then baked for 30 minutes, so it was more of just a cheese dish. It arrived-paper still covering the top, and was served with some under-seasoned fingerling potatoes and a salad. The salad was good and potatoes were okay, but the cheese was so one-note, it needed meat or veggies to dip in it. Unfortunately, I only had the few potatoes and two small bits of baguette to dunk, so my only option was to eat it like soup, which I did not-so half remained wasted and uneaten. We would have liked to have eaten dessert, but after the poor meal, and lack of even offering dessert, "How could we?". I'm giving 2 stars for the Tartiflette because it was delicious. I would not return and DO NOT RECOMMEND.

The light food is well presented, is of high quality and is very individual depending on the waiter. One dish can be garnished with paprika and strawberries by one and with tomatoes by another. The winestore/bar has about 6 small tables in a steep alley located in central Villefranche. During high season there is a calm flow of people strolling by. The environment is beautiful with a glimpse of the harbour. This is a perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine before dinner. Maybe buy a bottle, have a glass of it and finish it with dinner at home or at a restaurant nearby?
