The enormous white-clapboard church definitely looks WASP New England, which it formerly probably was. There is a huge social hall/community center attached to the church. The community is active, loving, family-oriented and welcoming to newcomers. Unfortunately, the church was already locked up for the evening so I didn't have a chance to see the interior and light a candle. Next time. I was happy that the festival was indoors, with a good dance floor, not broken-up parking lot asphalt. I also liked the fact that it was in October after most of the other Greek festivals were over. The food and pastries were terrific, made by the parishioners. The Makredes Ensemble has got to be the best Greek-American dance band in New England. I enjoyed their variety of dance music as well as the fact that they didn't drag on for 20 minutes with each kalamatiano, the Greek national folk dance that gets everyone up and moving. The Pontian Dance Group (from the Black Sea area) and their musicians were great. Their dance performances and native costumes were really well done. I appreciated the fact that they came back to the floor and taught their native dances to the festival goers. I also really appreciated seeing so many dancers (mostly non-Greek) from the Dance New England folk dance group--they really were some of the best dancers on the floor! They give such energy to the festival. I was only sorry that the dancing began so late (8:00pm) and that I had to leave at 10:00pm. I swear that some of the dancers who are Italian have Greek blood from their southern Italian ancestors. I was also impressed at how many people, especially men, were dancing and packing the floor! So much kefi! At too many of the festivals this year, there were very few people dancing, and even fewer men of any age. Only one thing annoyed me: the greasy smell of frying loukoumades (Greek fried dough which I love) permeated the air and made my clothes smell dreadfully for a couple of days afterward. THAT is one of the advantages of an outdoor festival--the frying loukoumades can be situated far from the action. It was a great festival overall and a wonderful way to end the 2008 Greek festival season. Kai tou xronou!

The Star of the Sea Beach Chapel is located on Route 1A Southbound, parallel to the beach/ocean…read more The Beach Chapel has weekend mass during the summer months, generally from May 1 through October 1. Parking is off street and an issue during summer mass. If you think of arriving late to the Chapel, don't plan on it because there will be no place to park. Inside the Chapel, seats can fill quickly, so it is suggested to arrive early enough for a seat. Speaking of the seats/pews, they are not modern and very uncomfortable. The kneeler does not raise up and is bolted to the floor, so it becomes a common tripping hazard. The pews are more or less benches, and very uncomfortable. If you have difficulty kneeling or not comfortable with a small seat, you will be best to stand at the back of the Chapel. One warm days during the summer, the Chapel gets warm as well. There is no air conditioning, other than the ocean breeze. If you see a fan off, turn it on please. This Chapel is located in a good spot, just not enough parking for all the parishioners. Such a life-changing week and it definitely transformed the lives of everyone in my team. We literally lived on their 2nd floor for a whole week through a mission organization called Touch The World and got to experience all the joy and blessings that came through serving the people of Lynn alongside the awesome folks at ECIC :) Their arms are so stretched out and touching everyone in the community. From the Haven Project, the MetroKids, the food pantry, the LOTH coffee shop, to the My Brothers' Table - everything they do have the well-being of the people of Lynn in mind, physically, mentally, spiritually. I highly recommend checking out the Sunday services at 9:45, 11, and 12:30 (dang - I still remember it after saying it hundreds of time throughout that one week). Everyone is welcome and when they say everyone, they really mean EVERYONE. They will welcome you with open arms. There is also children program called "All City Kids" and youth program called "All City Youth" if you got kids of those age.

AMAZING is the first word that comes to my mind as I write this review…read more I was first invited by a friend and decided to attend a Sunday service with my children. I was surprised by the diversity and acceptance of all that were in attendance. People of all ages and backgrounds just appeared to be at ease. Everyone was all smiles and very welcoming. Being in my twenties and not knowing what to expect, I was super nervous to attend as I have mostly been to Catholic churches in the past and not regularly. But I was at ease almost immediately. I signed my children into the kid's programs they offer before service started. There are various programs for kids of all ages (Lil' City Babies for ages 0-2, a nursery; Lil' City Kids for ages 3-4; and All City Kids, for ages 5-11). They really interact in such a positive way in all these children's lives. My children left so happy, excited to share their experience, and with a desire to return. I mean what kids honestly say they cannot wait to go back to church????? Well, here at ECIC, your kids will!! The adult service is so refreshing and relatable. There is music, a great sermon, and even good coffee lol. They also have a Wednesday service that follows with small groups so that you can reflect on what was discussed. I have gone every week since and wouldn't have it any other way. For the first time EVER, I feel like I can get close to Jesus in a way I didn't know was possible and it is because of this loving, accepting community. ECIC gives back to the community on so many levels, check it out, don't be shy. There is no parking lot which can be a bummer, but there is street parking available.

The Deacons give and incredible tour filled with history and they took us up to the steeple where we got to see the best view of the whole town and the bell on top made by Paul Revere. Wonderful service too. Great people and if you are visiting NewburyPort or anywhere near it o can tell you this tour was the highlight of our vacation!

When we moved from Boston, we assumed we would have to visit several churches to find a home. First…read moreParish was our first stop and we have been there ever since. Rev. Kelly Weisman Asproooth-Jackson is young, intellectually probing, socially minded, and deeply caring. He is also a wonderful writer and speaker; your favorite college professor times two. The music is very good with a fine choir and a highly accomplished organist and choir director, Robert Littlefield. Children are encouraged to participate and often included in the musical programming. The RE Director, Deb Sweet, has all the kids come down front each week for an interactive story before heading off to Sunday school. The services are very inclusive. The youth programs are excellent. There are many ways to actively serve the community such as the Tuesday night suppers for the hungry and Family Promise for those in need of temporary housing while looking for work. The congregations is welcoming and there are lots of children--always a sign of a healthy congregation. The spiritual focus is open-minded and questioning rather than dogmatic: Unitarianism at its finest. Lots of "formers": Catholics, Jews, Congregationalists--lots of people seem to find a home here. Standing on the Side of Love is not just a slogan here; it's a way of life. All in all a great place to become a member of a community.
