So where do I start. The desk staff are polite. They are one of the few offices that took my insurance, so I had little choice. The professional staff could use better bedside manner. They seem to grow more frustrated as time goes on. The staff prescribing medicine could be clearer; their verbal instructions didn't always align with what was on the bottle. Their billing system could be better, but that is minor. I feel they are genuinely good people but they fail in a few key areas of service. read more

I just did an intake call with this practice. It took them over a day to get back to me and then I had to beg them to have someone call me rather than just ask me to immediately schedule an intake or a $195 session with a therapist I have never spoken to. When someone did call me, he seemed very inexperienced and he did not know much about the company. He had to look everything up when I asked about prices, schedules, etc. It did not instill confidence in me. He also reiterated that I could not have a consult before matching my 14-year-old daughter to a therapist, I just had to take the therapist they had available and pay $195 for the consult. And the only therapist they suggested was a man even though I told them I preferred a female therapist for my daughter. I will be looking elsewhere. EDIT 6/15/2022: As you can see by Amy's response, the quality of this counseling center is clear. This was written 14 years later because I was 14 at the time of attending this center, would you have preferred I written this as a child? Should a child try to submit a complaint instead *while* working through their own trauma that you added to? It's taken a lot of therapy and help to get to the point to even realize how terrible and traumatic this experience was. I worked with another therapist to even get the support to post this. Rather than accepting any responsibility, there's clear dismissal of the issue altogether in addition to taking more than two years to respond. As a therapist, you're well aware that "I'm sorry..you feel" is not a real apology. I have been seeing my therapist and psychiatrist at Congruent Counseling for the past 5 years. In the ~25 years I've been seeing mental health professionals, I've never had anyone as wonderful as they are. I feel like a person, not a patient. I feel listened to, never talked down to or dismissed. I believe with all of my heart that they genuinely want to help me, and it's not just a job to them. At one time during the last 5 years, I suffered a debilitating severe depressive episode. They were both available and accessible to me as much as was possible. Finding ways to fit me in full appointment schedules, email, calls if needed, they were there for me. The front desk was even kind and patient when I would call them multiple times a day. I know this review is ridiculously gushy and over the top, but every word is true. I am very happy with Congruent. read more

This is where I met the therapist from hell. I came here during a time in my life where trauma was eating away at me and I didn't know if I could make it another month without lapsing into suicide and self-harm again. I read that DBT helps people with BPD and PTSD, and I heard from another psychologist that this place is highly rated, so I gave it a try. Little did I know what I was in for. During the consultation, I opened up about myself, about my past, about my BPD symptoms, and about my traumas from several severely abusive relationships. I've also been a victim of cheating, and the one thing that's kept me going over the years is the idea that someday at some point someone would care for me. I told him that my devotion and love was the only good thing I ever saw in myself and the one thing I didn't want to be taken away from me. As soon as I said this? He proceeded to rip me to shreds. He went on a massive tear on monogamy in general. He said things that are unprofessional and inappropriate in a clinical setting, like "if a friend flirts with your girlfriend, and she's turned on, and you're the one who gets laid (sic), what's your loss?", and "my wife has a crush on Samuel L Jackson, and we have a happy marriage, there's no problem with celebrities, since they can't have sex with your partner." He then proceeded to call it "unhuman" for a person to be wholeheartedly devoted to their partner, and while I took it as a massive compliment, I understand the intent was to demean me as sick for being monogamous and to insult my desire to have a partner who shared my stance on it, no matter hard that might be. He said things like "flirting is nature", and that "it's perfectly fine for a friend to flirt with your girlfriend", which are opinions entirely, and opinions which many if not MOST people would disagree with. Beyond that, he triggered my traumas from abuse. As a professional in trauma, he should know how to de-escalate a discussion about monogamy and should definitely know what he's doing - and that what he's doing is wrong. Instead, what did he do? He told me that I needed new friends. Ones that aren't monogamous. He told me to get new friends, because that all of my friends agree with me that it's perfectly normal to not want your partner to watch porn or crush on celebs, and that it's not okay to flirt with someone in a relationship and that it's healthy and normal to cut out friends who do that with their partner. Then, he told me that I'd NEVER find a partner who cared about me like I would about them. He said that it was sick and twisted of me to even want that. I didn't come here to be treated for being in love or monogamous, I came here to get treated for my traumas. And, and at the end of the day, the only things I walked out of the consultation with are traumas, a business card, and $200 less in the family wallet. read more

My positive review is based on Congruent connecting me to the therapy provided by Lori Simmons. The office staff are always organized, professional and pleasant to work with. I feel welcomed by them upon arrival and confident in their ability to handle the administrative tasks involved with my coverage. I have worked with Lori for several years now and she has had a profound impact on my life. She has a dedication to her craft and finely tuned skillsets brought on by years of experience. This is all combined with a true gift of tireless empathy. I won't even try to convey the strategies that she implements in my therapy as I humbly admit it is beyond my comprehension. Simply put, I walk out of the session in a healthier mindset than when I came in. It is a cognitive reboot with guidance to stay on track. Does this place really exists?? In the past 2.5 weeks, I have called 3 times (left messages, because "they were experiencing too many calls", and left 2 emails (through their website) and NO one has contacted me. And to think they are a counseling service?? What if I was really on the brink and desperately needed help? So far, I'm NOT impressed. Ryan Logue was my Counselor while I participated with an IOP group from August of 2016 until January of 2017. Ryan was able to bring a very diverse group of people into a safe place where we were able to learn from each other as he guided us with a straight forward, firm and understanding manner. I am glad that I took notes because I find that I refer to many of the strategies we learned in order to communicate more effectively as well as practicing Mindfullness. I am thankful to have finally found this Congruent approach to accepting and learning how to understand and manage challenges and dependaancy. Do not let a poor initial introduction to Congruent Counseling stop you from getting started. ( previous posts report difficulty with contacting the office as well as an unprofessional Professional ). Find the correct Counselor, which may not be the first one you meet. I have being seeing Ryan for over a year and a half at this point. While working through my issues with anxiety, depression, and PTSD has been slow, I genuinely feel that he cares about his clients. He has even pushed for me to continue to talking to another colleague even when he was out for medical leave. His perception skills are above average, compared to other counselors I've seen before. He has been more than willing to function with my work schedule to give me the time that I need. He is also willing to try different approaches when one method isn't working. It took a while, but he did earn my trust, and has the knowledge to work with and help me deal with my emotional trauma. His ability to make me feel relaxed, and as if I'm talking to a friend, has created a safe environment in his office space. I've personally recommended him to any of my friends interested in treatment. While I still have a ways to go the wade through the sludge caked up in my brain, I'm more than happy to be working with Ryan, even one the days my counseling is at it's hardest. While I also think the front desk staff needs a little work, the counselors here are definitely worth their weight in gold. read more

Our family has seen three counselors there. My wife & son have seen Ryan. Ryan is good at what he does, however, trying to get an appointment is next to impossible if you work. My wife had to stop seeing him because he just didn't have anything. My son also saw him. He definitely got through to him, and showed lots of empathy & compassion. He also was able to hold up a mirror to my son, so my son was accountable, and was able to see what others see. But again, getting appointments was challenging. My daughter saw Katie. Katie worked absolute miracles. She not only related to my daughter, but she really got through to her, motivated her, and my daughter today is exceptional, and has come into adulthood a responsible, accountable, and motivated happier, person. In addition, the process has gotten my daughter to want to work in the Psychology field! Lastly, I saw Jennifer. Very disappointing. I saw her for quite a while, and after having a lot of crap dumped on me in life, I reached a breaking point. Without getting into details, I truly felt Jennifer became a quitter. JMHO, I don't believe she's equipped professionally to deal with anything more than helping someone deal with the loss of their family pet. Then, when it was all said & done, I requested my transcripts of all my sessions with her. What an absolute two-faced liar! OMG! She also lied by omission by not including all the facts. Don't waste your time with her. I finally found someone who actually has a plan, and acts like they actually give a damn, not just a weekly paycheck to them. read more

My son was in Congruent's DBT program for over one year. I have had two interactions with the director, and he was not the kindest person. He is much more concerned with running a business than the welfare of the patients it serves. I attended the DBT therapy program for parents that comes with part of the program and the leader seemed detached and bored. It was a waste of time so I went somewhere else. The sad thing is that Congruent's DBT program is the only game in town for adolescents, but it is really bad. When my son's therapist there finally left, his departure was handled abysmally in a way that scarred my son. First the therapist said he would continue to see my son at the new practice, only if we would agree to continue with the DBT program at Congruent. When we said we would not, he said he did not have the skillset to treat our son. It took him an awful long time to figure that out! Think of all the money would could have saved! The other thing is that the DBT program cost 2K out of pocket and that astounding figure does not include psychiatric care and one-to-one therapy. Today I work with a very skilled DBT therapist in the #1 rated practice in Howard County (Innovative Psychiatry). The program there is for adults and outstanding - like a dream. I hope Innovative moves forward with plans to put a program in place for adolescents. In retrospect, I should have yanked my son out of there much sooner. Congruent's program did harm to my son. DBT is wonderful but not at Congruent. read more

My Son has suffered severe depression as well as suicidal tendencies for years. He is 20 and never held a job for long. He hated himself and everyone else and just wanted to die. Our insurance lead us to congruent counseling in Columbia to a counselor named Ryan. He went to him and seemed to like him at first. We had issues at home that were intense.My son didn't seem to be getting better after much time. He would miss appointments which I would ask why and he would say it doesn't help. We finally convinced him to go regularly and also went to a new psychiatrist. We were told my son has a mood disorder by the pshyc and really needed medication because his brain was not working as it should. He was violent and uncontrollable and constantly doing drugs to try and fix himself. We were on a ledge by this time. In going to his counselor he told them of his new diagnosis and Ryan decided he needed a new course of action. He talked Him into a program that they offer that is not covered by insurance and costs 2k a month and in time price may go down. My son would take classes and 2 times per week and parents once a week as well as phone assistance when needed to talk them off a ledge. We were all told this is the only thing that can help him. Well the first class was mindfulness and how to know when your person is about to blow and how to handle this. Okay we sat through this and picked up a few tips. second class we spent almost the whole 45 minutes filling out paper work we already filled out once and it was wrong so we had about 10 minutes of class after that. 3rd class Validation. Yeah learning to validate each other. We got in groups and talked of when we may have felt validated. By the time this was over my husband had seen enough. We are firm believers that none of this was going to help us with our sons problems. My son came out of his classes angry and barely would speak to us. When I asked him what was wrong he said mom this is the same crap Ryan has been telling me in counseling for the past year and it does nothing and I think they are taking your money. Needless to say we felt the same way. When I told Ryan we were no longer doing this program he told me he could no longer counsel my son because he could not help him. Well that was fine because I had already decided we were going a different route. We have continued with our Psychiatrist and his meds are helping wonderfully. He is now going to Healing path counseling to someone he calls his friend. She has made him much more self confident and learning to be proud of himself. Helping him find out what he wants to do in his life. He is working 2 jobs that he loves and is no longer avoiding being around people and laughing again like I have not seen in years. I never thought we would see our son again. I grant you counseling is not psychiatry. Ryan perhaps did not know my son had a mood disorder even with all the signs. So what I am trying to say is if in a year you have no result try another route and do not let anyone tell you this is the only thing that will help your person. I know we have a road perhaps of ups and downs but at least we know what we are dealing with. Congruent did nothing for us. I just thank God my intuition told me that this was wrong. I also would never have known if I had never went to this program so I guess as bad as it was it was worth seeing what they were doing and it made us understand that it was garbage. read more

I saw Kathy, "the social worker." She'll be really insistent on that point because she values pedantic semantics over healthy conversation. I left my 2nd appt with her early after she not only spent the entire appt insisting that I'm "angry at everyone" because I expressed anger towards one person. I "trust no one" because I expressed that bad experiences make me feel that many people out there are terrible. And I "Don't stand up for myself enough" because I expressed that I gauge the situation to determine if confronting a person is worth my time and that it is safe to do so. Oh, and this is after I told her that I DO stand up for myself frequently and I just don't do so with everyone because I was abused. She spent the entire appt victim blaming, speaking in absolutes (which is discouraged by all therapists) and when we complained to management her manager not only denied that she would do anything inappropriate, but recommended that I be thrown in the loony bin because I left angry and because I have a history of depression. Go here if you want someone to make your mental health worse within 2 sessions. This "social worker" has no business posing as a legitimate therapist and this business is irresponsible for keeping her on the payroll. read more

We have been coming here for a couple months, and while we love our therapist, the customer service seems to have gone a little down hill. Recently, we have struggled to contact the office via phone, but they do seem to be busy when we finally get in touch with them. So we're not sure if they just need more hands on deck when it comes to answering phones, but it is inconvenient when you are trying to schedule an appointment or ask a question about your bill, etc. When we do come in to the office, we are often 'greeted' by an unfriendly young lady who doesn't appear to let our therapist know we are here, so we end up waiting in the lobby area longer than we previously were. She spends more time on her personal phone than she does on taking care of patients as they come in and out of the door, and she seems annoyed to even have to help us when she actually does. She is fairly new, so we're not sure if she just needs more training, but in the past we have had excellent service when we come in and speak to the front desk. That's why recently it has been a bit disappointing. The rest of the staff that is there is just as helpful and friendly as they have been in the past, but they do seem busier. Perhaps they need more help up there? We'll continue coming because we really like our therapist, but we hope the customer service improves to the standard it was when we first started coming. It makes it difficult to come to a place where you may be treated indifferently. read more
