Went to the Connaught in hopes to sit at the famous "voted best 50 in the world" unfortunately on a sat night during Christmas week they were full , so was able to go to their other hotel bar which was lovely Service was great, coatcheck is offered and drinks were of course expensive- but you are in the heart of Mayfair Extensive menu with great descriptions of cocktails Dark moody hotel vibes

Ranked fairly consistently one of the Top Bars in the world. Okay, VERY misleading. A friend told me so I had just had to check it while I was in London. The Connaught Hotel, while stunning and elegant from the outside, the bar is quite small and honestly, cannot see anything special about it. There were at least two bars that I could tell and the "main" bar is a bit of a wait. When I looked inside, it was easy to see why. It is incredibly small and groups of people come in and dominate the few tables/sitting areas there are. And it seems most of the people who come here are "dressed to impress". I ordered an old fashion with Blanton bourbon. My first clue should have been the servers reaction when I asked for an old fashioned with Bourbon. She gave an expression as if she had never heard this before. When I received the drink, it was in an odd egg shaped glass not in a traditional high ball glass. There were small ice cubes, not even clear ice, unlike the traditional large single clear ice cube. There was no orange slice garnish and no dark cherry garnish. I'm not convinced they used Blanton's as requested and if they did, it was one of the weakest old fashioned drinks I have ever had. My friend had a gin drink which ironically did come in a traditional high ball glass with the single large clear ice cube. For a snack, they provided green olives and some type of pretzel. Apparently they also have food items but when asked, we weren't given any type of menu or offered the ability to order food. The only thing I enjoyed was the other room where we were seated, had an open roof with a nice view when you looked up (providing it is a clear day). I have no idea why this place has this reputation for such a great bar when they cannot even make a decent drink such as an old fashioned. I have traveled all over the world and it's a mystery how this place can hold such a ranking as I know there are better places in London to get a drink. It seems more like a place where no one wants to say what they are thinking since everyone else raves about it. Don't waste your time and money. The drinks are not even "okay" and there is nothing special about the bar. It's quite elegant, but I really don't care how proper the servers are and the look of the interior if the drinks are poor.

Yum! Chips and olives were great- Nice bar with great lighting and great service Drinks were yum, not necessarily mind blowing but definitely timeless and delicious. Highly recommend if you're stopping into London

Short version: Excellent service. Nice ambiance. Some of the most innovative cocktails I've ever had. Wine selection also excellent for a bar. I've now been 2 times. The first time was when they had the world's best bar ranking and 2nd time was recently. Both times I just walked in and after a short wait was shown to a table. I liked how the staff quickly took my jacket and had it checked before I even sat down. I'm usually a whisky drinker. I rarely get cocktails in bars because they are usually too sweet, or cheap ingredients are used or something. This bar is the rare bar where I actually only get cocktails. The cocktails are that good and inventive. They change them up periodically which is good. If you like your cocktail they give you a little card that has all the ingredients for your cocktails. As usual the service is impeccable. I cant wait to go back and see what new cocktails they are making. Highly recommended and a must stop in London.

I got a call that my grandma died in the middle of my visit to this bar and still had a net positive experience. I showed up right when it opened at 4pm and there was already a line building up, so lesson learned - if you want a guaranteed spot especially on a popular day, make sure to show up early. I was seated at a nice table and was immediately brought little crackers and olives, which were refreshed throughout my time even before they were empty. They also gave me a complimentary sip of some wine-based drink that was a nice touch. I ordered the Connaught martini and they warned me there would be a bit of a wait as they only have one martini trolley. A bit unusual for a popular bar that is popular specifically for their martinis, but whatever. The wait didn't end up being that long although I heard the martini speech being delivered to both tables next to me so it lost some lustre by the time the trolley got to me. Nonetheless, it was fun smelling the bitters and choosing one (I picked coriander). It was a phenomenal martini, maybe the best I've had. It was, however, £25. With that said, anytime I've spent that much on a cocktail before I usually feel like I've been robbed, which I didn't feel like here. When you factor in the service, atmosphere, experience, and complimentary treats, it really doesn't feel that insane. The biggest complaint I had, quite frankly, was the bathroom, which had a loooong line as it's shared with the entire Connaught hotel. Three toilets was NOT enough for the space. Overall would I come back? Honestly, yes, which I was not expecting to be able to say.

It's a hotel bar with well made martinis. Situated within the Connaught hotel, the entrance is right behind the giant stairs. Line to get in forms right next to the gents. No reservations, no way to leave a name and if the hostess deigns the line too long, you will not be permitted to wait in line. Also hotel guests get to skip the line. Not a place to come for a last minute drink or just to chill and relax. Currently No 1 in the world but I don't think it is that unique enough to justify its ranking. Been to other bars where it felt like bartending and cocktails were a craft and I don't really get the vibe here. Drinks were pretty standard. They do give a lot of free snacks like whole bowls of crackers and olives. A lot of the traffic here I feel is because of its current title (new rankings out on Oct 4th), so that people can say "I have been to the no 1 bar in the world". They also provide recipe cards for any drinks you order which is a great touch. The vibe is classy and elegant so dress to impress or you won't be getting past the hostess! If you are on vacation and are tight on time, this is NOT a must do. Honestly, it's a high end hotel bar. Update: Dropped to #8. Got to say ranking is pretty fair.

We walked in on a Monday night early November around 8pm. We were initially offered standing room only spaces at the bar which we were happy to take. We were offered a couple of mini refreshing drinks served in small coupe glasses which were tasty. After ordering a couple of cocktails at the bar we were offered seats which was great. The highlight of the experience was the tableside martinis. You are initially offered a card with the scents of five bitters to choose from. After that sit back and enjoy the expert bartender do magic creating your martini. We were here on our honeymoon and were offered some congratulatory chocolates which was much appreciated. Overall a very memorable experience!

I had never heard of this spot until my sister came to visit and mentioned it was on her list. When I looked it up and saw Mayfair I admittedly rolled my eyes but the pictures of the beautiful bar itself and the awards seemed worth a stop in We must have lucked out by going on a Monday right at 4pm when it opens. Sat right away at a corner low booth, and promptly served a welcome drink (vermouth and fresh pineapple juice) and two bowls of snacks. I almost fell over when the first drink I looked at came with a price tag of £150, but realized it was the vintage section (a handful of cocktails with vintage gin, mostly). Most cocktails were about $25-35, with unique and quality ingredients. They also have some food items, as pricey as you would expect and ranging from normal to fancy: £40 for a pizza, $35 for a sandwich and some caviar for $80 or so This is a gin focused bar and majority of drinks feature it and they have their own gin as well. We saw at least two tables order the famous martini cart (they come over and tell you the history of the drink while they make it in Front of your table). It was nice to see it in action with out paying that price tag. I was unlucky in my drink orders - they sounded delicious but neither to my taste, first was too sweet and none of the tumeric, kombucha or Chili flavour. The second, one of their "classics" No 11 was just too strong and again couldn't taste the floral notes it was meant to have. My sister however had two delicious drinks so like I said mine was more a preference issue than quality issue (her choices hovered closer to £40 though!). Four drinks and a bottle of water was over £150 so this is certainly a special ocassion place. But worth it for the beautiful decor, good service and extensive cocktail menu

Excellent service. Was sat promptly in primary room (wait and try to sit in the front of the house). Great wine and cocktail selection. All drinks served with olives and crisps. We were treated like royalty by attentive an attentive server. If it had not been for the £25-30 a drink price, we would have stayed all night. Remember these are smaller sized portions too in the UK, given hard alcohol pour limitations.

5 star service, the snacks were tasty along with the free shot sized drink on arrival. We had the foie gras canapes which were insanely good. Had to try the martini here after reading various articles. Drinks were good here but my expectations were higher. The martini at Duke's is in another league Once you take out the measurer, i think the martini will never be as strong as it really should be but perhaps that is my preference. The decor of the bar was also really plesant, very enjoyable for a quite drink. read more

Gorgeous bar in a gorgeous hotel in a (you guessed it) gorgeous part of London, the Coburg's a right nice spot for a tipple! I was there last night mingling over Cognac cocktails (http://london.blog.qype.com/2009/11/cognac-cocktails-a-salvaged-banksy-and-the-no-emissions-peugeot-prototype/) and couldn't get over how elegant and cosy this grand old bar was. Fireplace, wood panelling, extraordinary staff: I found this to be the perfect place for a chilly November night. As winter forges icily ahead, I hope I can take advantage of this Mayfair refuge at least a few more times. The canapes aren't a bad reason to visit either. I reckon the crab cake I had last night was the best I'd ever eaten. All in all, the Coburg offers an impeccable setting for intimate gatherings. They make a mean Sidecar too. read more

Great place for specialty cocktails. Great service. The cute Italian waitresses are not only that, but also very friendly and knowledgeable of the drinks. They are quite capable of describing the cocktail and match it up based on what you tell them you like. Good atmosphere and music. A must try if you're in London. read more

The Coburg at the Connaught Hotel was simply wonderful. All of the employees from the doorman to the restroom attendant where spectacular. I adored the bar tender. He helped me select the perfectly-paired hand-crafted cocktail to match my fresh, delicious, and nutritious Super Foods salad with smoked salmon, avocado, edamame, beets/beet roots, nuts, and greens. My meal was super-satisfying and the beautiful cocktail was perfection in a glass. The bar is warm and cozy, elegant and classy, with a burning fireplace, a gorgeous chandelier, velvet wingback chairs, and fresh flowers. Churchill and Eisenhower sipped vintage champagne in this room during wartime planning. The cocktail menu is as interesting as any book. Afternoon tea is also served here. This place is in a cool hotel. A place where the people come in dressed up for a pre dinner cocktail or just to hangout and enjoy the busy atmosphere. There are two bars in this hotel. The back bar is recommended if you like various hand crafted martinis. Recommended by Robert. read more

It gets confusing at the Connaught... It was recently redone to great acclaim with a completely new restaurant (goodbye Angela Hartnett and Gordon) and one refurb'd bar (the old Connaught Bar, now named the Coburg), and over the summer the former American Bar reopened with a new look (now cleverly named The Connaught Bar). Sadly for the bank account, I love hotel bars. I also loved the old Connaught. With its antiques, paintings and dark carved interiors, It was beautiful and old-school in a gentlemen's club kind of way. Fortunately, the massive renovation has just put a polish on the historical features while modernising the bits that admittedly had started to feel creepily lost in time. I haven't been able to wave my wallet at The Connaught Bar yet (watch this space), but I have spent a few evenings at the Coburg. While I really liked the old bar here, it has managed to transform itself into a non-cheesy cosmopolitan drinking den that is actually more pleasant. The staff is amazingly devoid of any stuffiness. Cocktails, while absurdly priced, are very well-done and the bar snacks top-notch. As far as the interior goes, I love the big wingbacked chairs (aesthetically more than practically though - unless you are hoping for a nap/relaxing read, I get frustrated with seats that swallow you), wood panelling and cool portraits. Less so the geometric carpeting that has a slight airport lounge feel. read more

george and his talented team set the standard at the coburg. we arrived at the connaught hotel, heading in the direction of the connaught bar. at first, we were disappointed that the connaught bar was closed and had to "settle" for the coburg. the coburg doesn't have a fancy drink menu but they raised the bar and set a new standard on the standards. cosmos and appletinis are not my thing - far too many bartenders turn this into a sugary disaster. but when they recommended it, we thought, why not? the caprioscas were fantastic. the cosmos were so well balanced and the perfect shade of pink. the appletinis were a pale green, luscious on the nose, delightful on the palette but dangerous for the mind. you won't feel a thing... intimate venue, quiet and cozy, view of the front. great for a sit back and read or lean-in conversation. excited to try more in the next visit... read more

Some of the best cocktails in London, hands down. Though the atmosphere is a bit formal, it's a great place to go with a friend or two and have a quiet conversation with some fantastic drinks. Expensive, but that's to be expected. Service is attentive but it can take a while for the bartenders to make the drinks because they can be quite complicated. It's indulgent and not the sort of place one would go to regularly, but if you're a fan of cocktails in any way you simply must go if you're ever in London. read more

If you are a Martini person, you would be foolish to not go in and try their renowned Connaught Martini Trolley. I typically will order a Lemon Drop Martini to see the talent of the bartender as I have had many versions over the years, I could easily give the one I enjoyed here a 9.5 out of 10. Their Tapas Menu provides you with some delightful items that will surely not disappoint even the most finicky eater. read more

Classy cocktail bar with a table side martini trolley which is a must have (may be a bit kitschy and touristy but worth the experience of smelling the bitters and choosing. I had the one with coriander leaves which was wonderful / will definitely come back to try the other drinks which all intrigued. Good atmosphere as well read more

It's a bit confusing since the Connaught Hotel has two bars, and I think they changed the names of the bars too. But this is the bar to the right of the entrance, and it's cozy, intimate, and plush. Feels old world, with a beautiful bar. I gave the waiter a few of my favorite ingredients and they brought back a drink that I enjoyed. My friend ordered a gin and tonic and it was most definitely the best gin and tonic I have ever had. Really great place to meet, although it's pricey at 17-20 pounds per drink! read more

I found the Connaught Bar to be a posh, rather small space that offers interesting twists on classic cocktails. As should be expected, I suppose, it is supremely over-priced. So maybe go when someone else is paying or you're flush. Glad I checked it out, however. read more

I'm not generally one for mixed drinks (or alcohol for that matter), but this bar - both for the drinks, and for the experience - completely blew my mind. Agostino and Rusty are award-winning mixologists, and we had the pleasure of meeting both of them, though Agostino took care of us throughout the evening. He met us briefly, and without speaking for more than a couple minutes, returned with drinks that blew me and my friends away. Each drink was tailored to our palate and our personality - it's like he was able to x-ray our souls, and come up with the perfect drinks for each of us. He did this repeatedly, and proved why he's such a valuable commodity for the bar and to his patrons. The service was very personable and very loving; we were very well taken care of and we can't wait to go back next time we're in London. read more

The bar is stylish without being pretentious, has a great ambiance. The staff is very friendly. When sitting down we were greeted with a complimentary mini drink, olives, and toast. We then ordered our main drinks...the drinks were fantastic. I would definitely visit again and recommend as a place to check out if you enjoy a high end cocktail bar. read more

The warmth and intimacy of the Coburg Bar makes it a wonderful place to relax after a day at the office or shopping, while the design and the cocktails at the Connaught Bar are perfect for an upbeat glamorous evening with friends. My colleague says that this is one of his favourite bars in London, so we came here for a drink after dinner in Mayfair. It's very dark, almost like a speakeasy type of feel, but luckily we didn't have a problem getting a table on a weeknight (and it comes with lovely nuts and green olives). We ordered at the bar and then they brought our drinks to the table. Their twist on a margarita is apparently one of their most popular drinks- they replace triple sec with something else, but it only has three ingredients so didn't sound that special. My colleagues got it, and the most interesting thing about it is the giant ice cube in the middle, which is cut to just barely fit into the glass, then flips over once inside so it can't get out again (until melted). I got one of the signature drinks with rum, fennel, and cocoa powder on the rim on the recommendation of the bar man... I was initially hesitant on the fennel but it actually tasted quite nice. And the mint julep my other colleague ordered came in a very impressive metal jug and had a beautiful dried orange carved into a flower on top. I would definitely take a friend here to impress them on a visit to London - definitely as good as it gets! read more

This is pretty high end though I'm not sure how being an American bar is much different to any other bar in the area. There's a good selection of American beers if that makes any difference but then so do most bars. read more

Luckily we found some stool seating by the front and were able to enjoy some beers and take in the ambiance. There's an upstairs that is accessible by a very very narrow staircase which even has handles for support, all part of the fun lol!! Beer: We tried out the Guinness (great pouring process!), peroni, and a local ale which the bartender allowed me to sample. He was very helpful and walked me through the different ciders they had in stock and even how you could add fruit syrups to sweeten the flavor. What makes this place even more memorable was the helpfulness of the young guy bartending. He helped us plan how to get to Gatwick airport extremely early the next morning and we owe him a big one!

The best bar in London? With a very honourable fifth place on The World's 50 Best Bars, the Connaught Bar is the highest ranked of London's bars. This is a fancy bar in a 5-star hotel, with the highest class and service imaginable, so it's recommended not to turn up in jeans and trainers. The menu includes signatures, classics and more experimental cocktails. Of course, they have their own gin, created for the 10th anniversary, and it can be served as a Dry Martini. The decor and atmosphere is straight out of a James Bond film, so it feels only natural. The service continues to keep the style, with a bartender appearing with the "dry martini cart" at the table. First you get to decide which of 5 different bitters you prefer and then the cocktail is mixed spectacularly in front of everyone's eyes. But it's not just a show, it's incredibly aromatic and well-balanced. We also try our test cocktail, which is of course perfectly mixed. What can I even say about The Connaught Bar that hasn't already been said? It's one of the top bars in the world for a reason. From the second you walk in, the whole thing feels special without feeling stiff or uncomfortable. They welcome you with a small cocktail when you arrive, which immediately sets the tone. The bar itself is beautiful and tucked inside The Connaught hotel, which already feels incredibly elegant before you even sit down. We only ordered one drink each and honestly... one was enough because the martini experience there is on another level. The preparation alone was mesmerizing to watch. I've had martinis before, obviously, but never presented or crafted like this. It really felt like watching people who have completely mastered their craft. Expensive? Yes. Worth it?
