This review is of my visit on a Saturday when the inside of the building was closed and so, I only got to see the whole of the outside of the Capitol building. I was very impressed by the architecture of this building. It's design and décor were interesting and unique compared to the other standard Capitol buildings design that I have seen elsewhere within the continental U.S. This Capitol Building is adjacent to Bushnell Memorial Park and Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Arch. It has a beautiful gold leaf dome and its façade is made of New England marble and granite. From my online research on this building, I came to learn that this building's architecture is of Second Empire & Renaissance Revival kind on the outside and High Victorian Gothic on the inside. The weather on the day of my visit was not good, so my photos may not necessarily reflect how impressive this building looks (I haven't edited them) but I bet on a beautiful sunny day, the photos would make this Capitol building look even more wonderful. This is definitely a place to visit for sightseeing activities when in Hartford. read more

Another beautifully appointed State House. Although it isn't my favorite, it was very interesting to explore. Visitor parking onsite and a few guides for a self-guided tour. We had just missed the guided tour, but sometimes I like to wander on my own anyhow. The senate and house meeting rooms were both quite lovely. I loved the antique water dispenser, which was just beautifully crafted. I learned that this was for the horses. You filled your bucket and took it outside for them. The carvings and statues were very opulent and ornate. There was one that was labeled to be one of the oldest, preserved from the Cival War. It is so fun to compare and contrast various state capitols buildings. They all have an interesting history and a unique flair of their very own. read more

Last day visiting CT and decided this was the way to go. Visited on a Monday around noon, and it was not busy at all. We were able to walk in and tour the place ourselves. It is such a neat building with plenty of historic artifacts inside. All the employees were super friendly. People do actually work inside of this building, so it was busy with a bunch of workers trying to make it from one point of the building to the other. Learned a little bit of CT history. We were able to tour the room where the decision was made to make Marijuana legal in CT. About 4 stories tall. We also were able to walk underground over to the legislative building as well! Such neat history is located here also. A lot of comemerative veterans are seen all throughout the walls also which lets you pay many respects throughout your visit. It was such a great last day tour, and I'm glad we visited. read more

I found the exterior of this state capital building to be quite impressive; the interior is a bit lacking IMHO. Outside, you'll see a towering golden dome that rises over Hartford quite impressively. There's also a relief arrayed around the edges of the building that illustrates scenes from the history of this State. Inside, there are a couple of interesting things, i.e., sculptures, battle flags, etc., but it'll take you under a half an hour to see all of it once you enter. All things considered, this place is worth a visit, if only to get some pictures of that impressive dome :-) read more

Another beautiful, historic, Capitol Building with an impressive golden dome. There are regular tours each weekday and I was the only one who showed up at 9:15am on a Monday, so I was able to get a private tour. Some capitols will not even do a guided tour for only one random person. After my tour, which was very informative about the building's history, architecture, and the state in general, I was free to wander around and take pictures of the various statues throughout. The rotunda is the centerpiece of all state capitol buildings and this one was no exception. Although it's a very small rotunda, the statue of a winged woman holding a wreath is very impressive. This statue used to be on top of the building and has been restored to its original beauty. You can look up and see the sun shining through the dome through stained glass. There is also a hall of flags. And you can also see the bed of Revolutionary War hero Lafayette, which folded out from like a box. The State Capitol is surrounded by a park, which has a fountain and various statues. If you visit the capitol building you might as well take a walk around the park too. The Connecticut state capitol is one of the smaller capitol buildings but it is still a beautiful one kept in immaculate condition. read more

Beautiful building, especially so just after a snowstorm. As one of the founding states of the United States, I would expect it to be impressive and it is. Sadly, closed on this snow day after hours so no exploring was possible. The building is surrounded by monuments and memorials. Take a bit of time and walk around to take them in. read more

We showed up on a Friday before a three-day weekend. The Capitol building was pretty empty, but we were able to hitch up with a fourth grade class tour. The property is beautiful and shows anazing restoration. The tour guide was excellent and the State Police were friendly and helpful. I am happy I was talked into visiting Worth the stop. read more

Awesome tour by the Ladies of League of Women voters. They are friendly and knowledgeable about their Connecticut history. They will tell you about how the CT government is different from other states. You meet at the Legislative office building and then they will take you into the State Capitol via a moving conveyor belt. (There is free parking in the parking garage (only on the first floor) near the legislative building.) In the Legislative building, there is a cafeteria open to the public that serves a decent selection of sandwiches, soups, wraps, and specials of the day. Bathrooms are clean. The flooring on the first floor of the legislative building lobby has a cool 3D effect. Be advised that your belongings will have to be scanned through an x-ray machine. read more

Connecticut State Capitol - Public Services & Government Near Me - Hartford, Connecticut

On a recent trip to the Northeast we had fun touring two state capitols in one day. Our second capitol of the day was the Connecticut State Capitol in Hartford. They had guided tours, but we missed the last one of the day, so we grabbed a self-guide tour book and made our way around the building. I loved seeing all the marble and stenciled stained-glass windows. Quite impressive. The dome itself is also remarkable. It is 32 feet tall; on top of that is a cupola 55 feet in height, and the drum below is 75 feet, making the drum taller than the 70 feet height of the main walls. The overall height of the tower is 257 feet. Like most other capitols, the Connecticut State Capitol has two chambers, The House of Representatives and the senate. I always enjoyed checking them out even though they weren't in session when we visited. The Connecticut State Capitol is really beautiful and I enjoyed seeing their amazing stairs, the Hall of Flags, their State Seal, their Liberty Bell, and many statues in the capitol and on the grounds. Awesome visit to Hartford! What a nice and clean city. The Capitol was hard to find at first but I wasn't disappointed. Very French on the outside and very Victorian with Moorish undertones on the inside. Had a great tour of the building representing the Constitution State. Just overall an extremely beautiful building that everyone should see. Tour guide was also extremely friendly! Make sure to meet them in the legislative building across the street first. read more

Connecticut's State Capitol is stunning. The architecture reminds me of a medieval castle with a rich history. The grounds are well kept, and parking was free (or at least we simply parked). There might be a walking path/trail or park nearby as we saw several people working out/doing cardio activities nearby. This is perhaps the most unique state capitol/house in New England. read more

Connecticut's Capitol building manages to dominate the view from the highway through the city, despite the high rises of downtown. Its gold dome shines above granite columns with nineteenth century opulence. The Victorian sensibility is echoed inside, though there the grandeur feels like it's on a more human scale. There's more color and a lot of light pouring between the balconies on each floor. The public spaces echo with footsteps and conversations, and look carefully because there's probably a news conference or a public meeting or an award ceremony going on in the next room or around the corner. read more

For my only internship placement of my MSW, I've been placed with one of the commissions located here. There is a public entrance into the Capitol on the west side of the building. Public parking on the Capitol grounds are limited, with ample public parking near the LOB instead. I suggest parking near the LOB if you don't mind the walk. There are free tours of the LOB and the Capitol on weekdays. Take advantage of it. You will learn about the history of our state, plus get a general idea of where to go if you come back here for an event, to testify at a public hearing, or to lobby. The structure inside and out is incredibly beautiful, but don't take my word for it. Take the tour. It's better to see it in person. If you are broke and want something to do, or want to get the kids out of the house for the day, take the tour. Sure it's educational, but the views are beautiful. read more

I love state capitols, and this one is amazing - looks like a large castle. The grounds are kept up nicely, and the surrounding parks with carousel are nice to walk through. I like the different governor statues on the sides of the building. Parking is a little scarce, but you can normally find something nearby and walk. read more

Self paced tour on the first floor of the building. Really beautiful building. IMHO one of the better ones I've been in. Interesting selection of artifacts (lots of history from revolutionary war to civil war). Worth 1/2 hour and then you can move on to your next place (suggestion is Mark Twain's house 10 minutes away). read more

This is not a huge state capitol, but it is beautiful on the inside and outside. The details of the interior are something to behold and there's a collection of battle flags that date way back. The Senate Chamber is also very cool. read more

Beautiful structure. Run down, seedy area. Bad traffic through questionable neighborhoods getting here. Didn't seem like the kind of place you'd want to visit at night. Or alone. read more
